As previously reported by News Center 7, workers on the roof were placing shingles when they saw smoke and called 911, Hartings said. Around 7 p.m., the steeple of the church collapsed. News Center 7's cameras were rolling when the church's steeple crumbled in the flames. Hershovitz said the fire was so massive that help was called from nearly 20 other departments. 'It's definitely hard to just stand and watch, even though there's not much else you can do,' said Brad Spettel. 'It's sad to see it in this condition,' said Kevin Schlater. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati released a statement stating they were 'deeply saddened' by the destruction the fire caused. We are working to learn how much damage the fire caused. 'I definitely think there's an aspect of looking at it as just, just the three-day weekend,' Dominic Hartung, of Germantown, said. Hartung told News Center 7 that while many may just look at the extra days off, he keeps his focus on what Memorial Day truly means. The city of Dayton is getting ready for what could be the busiest week of the year. Worker crews used forklifts to pull pallets of mental fencing off trucks parked around Downtown Dayton. They blocked off some lanes during the set-up, but the streets have not completely closed yet. News Center 7's Xavier Hershovitz reports that no one will be allowed inside the security zone unless they have been cleared by NATO security protocols. Dayton Police told News Center 7 they are putting up 14,000 feet of fencing and 6,000 feet of barricades. People who work in Downtown Dayton are also preparing for all the changes. 'What's the traffic going to be through the courthouse?' asked Seyta Davis? 'I'm like, well, you can take your chances and find out, but it probably will be pretty hectic.' People say it is both heartbreaking and not surprising after two people died in two separate shootings in Springfield. Springfield Police told News Center 7's Xavier Hershovitz that officers showed up and found a man in his 30s who had been shot and killed after a party. 'The last 10 years, this town's been going straight to hell,' said Rex Couch. 'All these young kids, they don't see it. Try to talk to them, it doesn't matter.' Then, around 2:30 p.m., a car crashed into a home at the corner of South Limestone Street and East Euclid Avenue. The driver was found shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
