Xia tells HK Coalition to contribute more to country
Xia tells HK Coalition to contribute more to country Tam Yiu-chung (left) read out a congratulatory message from Xia Baolong at an event marking Hong Kong Coalition's fifth anniversary. Photo: RTHK The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Xia Baolong, on Tuesday urged the Hong Kong Coalition to make greater contributions to the SAR and the country's rise as a strong nation. He made the comments in a congratulatory message for the group's fifth anniversary which was read out by its secretary-general, Tam Yiu-chung. Xia was also quoted as saying there should be greater collaboration with the international community, as Hong Kong connects with the country's strategy in a pro-active manner. He told the coalition to thoroughly learn from the spirit of important speeches of President Xi Jinping, and proactively recognise, respond to and seek changes. The head of Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong, Zheng Yanxiong, was among those attending the event in Wan Chai. He said one of the ways to make greater contributions is to fight against suppression by external forces like the United States, while defending national interests and maintaining the SAR's unique status. Zheng then switched from Putonghua to Cantonese. "The world's very chaotic. China's really doing well. The rise of the East is so apparent, the tables have turned," he said, drawing cheers from the audience. "There's no need to worry, the safest place is Hong Kong." The liaison office director also said despite changes, people should maintain their unwavering confidence in Hong Kong, believing in the fact that the uncertainties and negative impact of the external environment cannot stop the SAR's rise to greater prosperity. Chief Executive John Lee, meanwhile, said amid the uncertainties, Hong Kong has to find opportunities. He stressed that despite external provocations and bullying, the SAR will continue to be a free economy, uphold a simple, transparent and fair system, and stay open to the world.

No further details were provided regarding the background checks, but it is worth noting that many crypto users jumped into the space due to the anonymity promised around a holder's background. Trump's upcoming Gala Dinner with TRUMP whales comes amid increasing scrutiny over the president's crypto ventures. Just last week, Democratic lawmakers stormed out of a scheduled hearing on crypto legislation after Republicans allegedly refused to discuss Trump's crypto involvement. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said she objected to the hearing due to the president's "ownership of crypto" and his "corruption" in relation to his crypto ventures. There has been growing concern over potential conflicts of interest surrounding the president's role as the head of the country and his continuing business ventures in the crypto space. © Copyright IBTimes 2024. Xia urges defence of national interests amid sanctions
Xia urges defence of national interests amid sanctions Senior Beijing official Xia Baolong has laid out four key expectations for entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and Macau during a meeting. Photo courtesy of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office A senior Beijing official overseeing Hong Kong and Macau affairs has called on enterprises in the two cities to defend the nation's interests with "fighting spirit" amid sanctions and suppression. Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, also underscored the importance of attracting investment and exploration of emerging markets during Monday's meeting with business leaders. According to the office's statement, he told entrepreneurs the key to weathering the storm and emerging victorious was to "stand firm" with the motherland on the right side of history. "There are two completely different responses to hegemony: one is to be spineless and 'kneel down' to beg for mercy," Xia was quoted as saying. "The other is to be tough and to stand firm in defence, demonstrating the Chinese people's indomitable spirit. Laying out four expectations, the senior Beijing official urged business leaders to show a determined spirit and defend national interests. "[Xia said] when we are facing sanctions and suppression, we should all unite and demonstrate our resilience and integrity," according to the statement. Xia also highlighted the need for the two SARs to build confidence in development while attracting and retain investment; to expand global connections by leverage their unique advantages; and to promote the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and share the good stories with the rest of the world. In response, Chief Executive John Lee vowed to lead the administration, business leaders and entrepreneurs in Hong Kong in developing a stronger sense of responsibility. Macau's leader Sam Hou-fai, for his part, said his administration would lead the city in making more substantive contributions to the economy and maintain its long-term prosperity and stability.

Xia discusses Sino-US trade war with Macau officials
Xia discusses Sino-US trade war with Macau officials Xia Baolong waves at reporters as he heads into a seminar with Macau's delegates to the national legislature. Photo: RTHK The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Office, Xia Baolong, discussed the impact of the Sino-US trade war on Macau with the SAR's officials on Sunday. That's according to Macau's delegates to the national legislature who met him during a seminar, which was also attended by the SAR's Chief Executive, Sam Hou-fai. A delegate, Domonic Sio, quoted Xia as saying Macau should stay confident in light of the trade war. "The director told us that the tariff war will likely continue for a period of time, having a major impact on the entire world," Sio told reporters. "He said it'll certainly be painful. We may not know how long the pain will last, but we all have to face it, that's for sure." Others said Xia spoke about speeding up the development of the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, as well as diversifying Macau's economy. The senior Beijing official spoke to Macau lawmakers in a separate seminar at the legislature. There, he was said to have affirmed the work of the SAR's government as well as legislature. "He particularly praised us for enacting laws on gambling and national security, as well as major bills such as that on electoral reform," the head of Macau's legislature, Kou Hoi-in, said. "On the other hand, the director stressed that we must diversify the Macau economy." Kou also quoted Xia as saying that Sam, who began his term in December, has started off well.

Michelle Xia
Akeso Biopharma, based in Zhongshan, China, has become one of the country's biggest breakout innovators this year. Led by co-founder and CEO Michelle Xia, the company has surged onto the international scene with drugs focused on cancer and immunology. In March, a phase 3 study published in The Lancet showed Akeso's ivonescimab outperformed Merck's blockbuster cancer drug Keytruda (pembrolizumab) pushing the FDA to fast-track its approval review of ivonescimab. And in April, the FDA approved Akeso's drug candidate penpulimab-kcqx—its first approval in the U.S.—for some types of head and neck cancer, four years after it was approved in China. Just a decade ago, this kind of success was unimaginable to Xia. When she started the company with her cofounders in March 2012, there was little drug innovation in China. 'We started from nothing,' she says. They built a lab, started drug discovery programs, moved products into development, manufacturing, clinical trials, and commercialization. In the past 10 years, they've tested dozens of candidates and brought seven drugs to market. They're currently eyeing cancer treatment cadonilimab, first approved in China in 2022, as their next drug to expand globally. The drug significantly improved survival rates for patients with cervical cancer compared to chemotherapy alone, according to results presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in November. The company's sudden global influence is indicative of China's spreading power in medicine. Akeso is running several phase 3 studies to expand the approval of ivonescimab in China, but it's also collaborating with Summit Therapeutics to bring ivonescimab to clinical trials in the U.S., Europe, and more. Despite the fraught geopolitical climate, Xia's optimistic about a future where treatments can be exchanged between countries. For example, drugs Akeso developed in China have already accrued lots of patient data, which can shorten the development and approval timeline in the U.S.. 'We can contribute innovation globally,' Xia says. 'I think that's very satisfying.'
