Ongole GGH launches advanced equipment for cancer detection

The Pathology Department of Ongole Government General Hospital (GGH) and Medical College on Monday has launched advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) equipment worth ₹40 lakh for effective cancer diagnosis, in Prakasam district. The IHC equipment, which was procured using funds of Post Graduate (PG) medical education programmes, was formally inaugurated by Principal and In-Charge Superintendent of the Medical College Dr. Y. Yedukondala Rao. On the occasion, he said that the introduction of the IHC equipment at GGH will play a vital and multi-faceted role in the fight against cancer. He explained how it can help detect whether a person has cancer and identify the exact type of cancer. 'The IHC plays a crucial role in cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning, all of which are essential for effective prevention and treatment. It helps identify specific markers in cancer cells, enabling doctors to accurately determine the type and subtype of cancer. It also helps estimate how the cancer will respond to different treatments,' he informed. Based on the reports generated by the IHC equipment, the doctors can decide what medications are required and for how long they should be used. This makes it easier for doctors to choose the most effective treatment options. The equipment can detect various types of cancer, especially in cases of breast and lung cancer, helping to identify the exact type involved. Dr. Yedukondala Rao urged the public to recognise the significance of this facility now available in Prakasam district and make full use of this opportunity. He advised that those who need it can undergo IHC testing by contacting the Preventive Oncology and Surgical Oncology departments. Until now, this kind of diagnostic test was available only in major metropolitan cities. The local people have been going to Vijayawada or Guntur to undergo the diagnosis. With the launch of this equipment, they can now avail such services here only.
