Ex-England star pulled away from rival in Baller League fracas – but has last laugh

Joleon Lescott was sent off after reacting badly to a late tackle from an opponent while playing for Deportrio against Wembley Rangers in the Baller League on Monday night Former England defender Joleon Lescott had to be pulled away from an opponent after reacting badly to a late challenge while playing in the Baller League. Lescott is the biggest name taking part in the influencer six-a-side tournament and didn't take kindly to a tackle on Monday night. The 42-year-old, who previously played for Manchester City and Wolves, now turns out for Deportrio – the side managed by Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Gary Lineker. He plays alongside other former Premier League stars including Marvin Sordell and Bakary Sako in the tournament at the Copper Box Arena in London. ‌ Deportrio took on Wembley Rangers – the team led by Ian Wright and Chloe Kelly – on Monday night. And things got heated when Wembley's Domingos Pires was slightly late in trying to close down Lescott. ‌ Although Pires didn't seem to catch the former pro, Lescott took exception to the challenge and grabbed his opponent's arm. The two players then grappled with each other, nearly ending up over the advertising hoardings and into the crowd. Baller League staff, other players and the officials had to separate the two as tempers threatened to boil over. In the end it was settled by both Lescott and Pires being sent off for two minutes. Lescott ultimately had the last laugh, though, with Deportrio picking up a 4-1 win to go top of the Baller League, with Sordell scoring the pick of the goals. Wembley Rangers, meanwhile, sit 11th in the 12-team league, having won just one of their six matches so far. Deportrio boss Richards was inside the Copper Box on Monday night and certainly made his presence felt. After Yanited lost 4-2 to Trebol FC, Richards ran onto the pitch to perform Yanited YouTuber star PK Humble's dance on the pitch with Trebol's players joining in. 'PK got humbled tonight,' Richards later told Sky Sports. 'We arrived tonight. Top of the league.' ‌ This is the first UK edition of the Baller League, which was first launched in Germany after being created by entrepreneur Felix Starck and aided by Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski. It started on March 24 and will take place weekly until the final on June 11. There are 12 teams, made up of ex-pros, futsal players and influencers, and there are custom rules designed to try and make it more interesting. The six-a-side matches are 30 minutes long, use rolling substitutions and don't have corners. For example, the final three minutes of each half are 'gamechangers' which include a 3 vs 3 format, long-range goals scored from behind the offside line counting as double and goalkeepers being unable to use their hands.

Ex-SPFL cult hero spotted making surprise debut in the Baller League as he mixes with influencers and social media stars

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT'S a bit like the Tennent's Sixes on steroids. The Baller League is the brainchild of German entrepreneur Felix Starck and footballers Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski. 3 Garang Kuol and Callum Butcher Credit: Kenny Ramsay 3 Callum Butcher, Dundee Utd Credit: Willie Vass 3 Callum Butcher and Christian Doidge Credit: Kenny Ramsay And Scottish viewers of the fast moving, indoor 6-a-side football format on SkySports got a surprise last night when a former Scottish Premiership cult hero was spotted getting in on the action. For the uninitiated, the Baller League at the Copper Box arena in London boasts hardened ex-pros like Troy Deeney, Henri Lansbury, Marvin Sordell and Ciaran Clark - and pairs them with some tidy current amateur or semi-pro stars, with influencers and social media stars among the management. And the cast list was joined yesterday by former Dundee United and Motherwell defender Calum Butcher, who added his usual brand of no-nonsense play as a "wildcard" signing for table-topping outfit Yanited. Yanited are managed by 'Angry Ginge', an English Twitch streamer and YouTuber whose real name is Morgan Birtwistle and is primarily known for creating FIFA and football content. Alan Shearer, John Terry and Ballon d'Or winner Luis Figo have also signed up to manage teams but none have made a faster start than Yanited. Their 3-0 win over Deportrio, run by Micah Richards, Gary Lineker and Shearer, means they've now won all five of their games. Butcher, now 34, started out at Tottenham but made a whopping 134 appearances for the Tannadice men across two spells and has also graced the Fir Park side as well as Barnet, Millwall and Burton Albion. He's one of few stars in the Baller League with a genuine Scottish link. His erstwhile Yanited team-mate, former Aberdeen defender Michael Hector, is another man who previously plied his trade in the Scottish Premiership. KSI, who has 25 million subscribers on YouTube, is the league's president. Maya Jama in mad dash live on TV to get to Baller League dugout before becoming team's 'lucky charm' In the final three minutes of the each half the normal six-a-side rules are turned on their head with various powerplay options - these including switching to a three v three format, long-range goals counting double and goalkeepers not using their hands.
