FACT Review: Ed Sheeran's one-man show proves to be the perfect equation

Ed Sheeran performed as part of the inaugural Offlimits Music Festival which also marked his debut in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has been upping the ante lately with a lineup of incredible concerts. 2025 kicked off with Coldplay, and we've since seen legends like Sting, Christina Aguilera, and Usher set stages on fire. Most recently, it was Ed Sheeran who headlined the inaugural Offlimits Music Festival in the capital. Bringing his Mathematics Tour to Abu Dhabi's Etihad Park, this marked Ed Sheeran's first-ever performance in the UAE capital. He had previously wowed Dubai crowds last year with the same tour. As a long time Ed Sheeran fan, this concert was a third time's the charm moment. Having missed his 2015 show at Dubai Media City Amphitheater and 2024 Dubai shows, his performance as part of the Offlimits Music Festival felt like fate — even if fate involved a very last-minute dash to the venue. Getting into Etihad Park was its own mini adventure. With Yas Mall parking packed to the brim, a solid 15-minute mall trek and then to the actual gate, FACT made it just in time. Before Ed Sheeran took the stage, One Republic had gotten the crowd buzzing. The band's frontman, Ryan Tedder signed off cheekily, announcing, 'Next up is Ed Sheeran from the UK… he's alright,' sending ripples of laughter and cheers through the crowd. Then, without any dramatic pause, playful tease, or the usual 'get-your-phones-ready' intro most artists lean on, Ed Sheeran burst onto the stage strumming — and drumming — with his battered and beloved guitar. The crowd instantly erupted. Dressed in simple black trousers and a black T-shirt that had 'Abu Dhabi' printed across it in the colourful style of his Mathematics Tour branding, Ed Sheeran took command of the stage effortlessly. He kicked off with a guitar solo, layering beats with his loop pedal. This lets him create tunes completely live and have them looped, freeing him up to interact with the crowd without missing a note. Once Ed Sheeran was in the groove, he launched into Castle on the Hill, with the entire crowd belting along. Behind him, animations danced across giant screens — some clips from his album artwork, some live visuals like butterflies fluttering across bright backgrounds. It added a dreamy feel without overpowering the simplicity of his one-man-band setup. Ed Sheeran rolled through hit after hit — Shivers, I'm a Mess, and The A Team. Fun fact: the singer confessed he thought The A Team would be a one-hit-wonder. Safe to say, things turned out just fine for him. When he sang Give Me Love, the mood mellowed, but the crowd stayed connected, humming along with him. Then, picking the energy right back up, he invited the audience to sing along that only made the night feel even more special. Next came Don't and Take It Back, where Ed Sheeran went full rap mode, ditching his guitar for a bit and just spitting bars. While most artists spend live shows switching flashy outfits, Ed Sheeran stuck to his trusty black tee and swapped out guitars instead. It was clear. For him, it's about the music, not the theatrics. Soon, he slowed things down with Happier, Love Yourself and Sing. When Photograph started, you could feel the emotional shift. That song hit differently as the crowd swayed under a soft green sage-like animation playing on the screens. From there, the set flowed beautifully — One, Perfect and Thinking Out Loud had couples dancing and grooving in a sea of lights, before everyone jumped back up for Ed Sheeran's latest track, Azizam. Finally, we hit the home stretch with the high-energy Shape of You — the entire Etihad Park jumping in unison — before he closed the night with Bad Habits and a massive firework display that lit up the sky. It was a grand, sparkling finale to a night that felt like it flew by too fast. Ed Sheeran performed for two hours straight — no backing band, no break, just a man, his guitar, his loop pedal, and 30,000 fans singing right along. Most artists would have taken a breather, but not Ed Sheeran. He powered through with an energy and passion that proves why he's considered one of the best live performers today. Now, to be fair, not everything was perfect. While Ed Sheeran's performance was spot on, the sound system at Etihad Park left a bit to be desired. It felt overly loud and slightly distorted with that crackling sound that can get a bit uncomfortable. Maybe it was because the organisers were trying to project all the way to the back of a massive crowd or to drown out the sounds from the other stages, which really should have been inactive during the headline set. All in all, Ed Sheeran's set at the Offlimits Music Festival was nothing short of incredible. The sheer talent, energy, and heart he brought to the stage completely overshadowed everything else. After years of near-misses, finally seeing Ed live felt like the perfect full-circle moment — worth every step of the mad dash to the venue. GO: Visit for more information.

Review: Avlu at Yas Mall Abu Dhabi

Can you really recreate Aegean charm inside a mall? Yas Mall has quietly transformed into one of Abu Dhabi's top dining destinations. Beyond shopping, it boasts an impressive lineup of restaurants that go far beyond the standard mall food court. With standout spots like Soraya, L'eto, Mezzaluna, and now AVLU, it has firmly established itself as a go-to for culinary enthusiasts. Conveniently located for both Abu Dhabi residents and visitors from Dubai, the mall takes full advantage of its prime Yas Island setting. AVLU Greek & Turkish Cuisine aims to bring the flavours of Turkey and Greece straight to the UAE capital. Like many of Abu Dhabi's top eateries, AVLU prioritises fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their breakfast spread is a shining example, featuring Turkish sesame simit, Canakkale Ezine cheese, seasonal fruits, and steaming cups of Turkish mountain tea. Look and Feel Drawing inspiration from the Aegean region, AVLU's design masterfully balances rustic charm with modern elegance. Soft whites, earthy pastels, and warm peachy tones create an inviting atmosphere that feels like a Mediterranean escape. The hand-painted murals – intricate artworks that took over a month to complete – tell rich stories of Aegean life. True to its name (which translates to 'courtyard' in Turkish), AVLU's standout feature is its courtyard-inspired dining space. Bathed in natural light, it offers an indoor, temperature-controlled sanctuary with a centrepiece lemon tree adding to the Mediterranean aesthetic. Images: supplied The Menu For lunch, we put ourselves in the capable hands of executive chef Olcay Hanci, and the menu does not disappoint. We start with grilled Greek octopus and baked manti (Dhs48), followed by a standout favourite – the aubergine millefeuille (Dhs48) layered with green Manouri cheese and Turkish labneh. The slow-cooked beef cheeks (Dhs128) are melt-in-the-mouth, while the Dolmadakia (Dhs34), made with Tokat vine leaves, dolma rice, and smoked yogurt, offers a fresh twist on a classic. For meat lovers, the Hunter's Board (Dhs695) is a feast designed for four, packed with chicken, keftedakia, and lamb souvlaki – a protein-packed spectacle that's perfect for sharing. Verdict: Beautifully designed with a menu that delivers on flavor, AVLU is a worthy pit stop for anyone visiting Yas Mall. How Abu Dhabi creates a safe, empowering space for people with autism

2 Apr 2025 00:44 KIRSTIN BERNABE (ABU DHABI)From creating accessible infrastructure to setting top-notch standards for care, Abu Dhabi has always made space for people with autism.A champion of inclusivity, the emirate is among the global leaders in terms of providing support to people of determination and this has been evident in the distinctive projects and initiatives it has rolled out for this sector. Ahead of World Autism Awareness Day, marked every year on April 2, Aletihad looks into a number of projects that make the emirate a welcoming, empowering space for those on the autism spectrum. At the Airport Travelling can be exhausting for many people, but for those with autism, it is particularly challenging. At airports, the crowds, the noise, and several things happening all at once can be too overwhelming. Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport (AUH) acknowledged the struggle and did something about it: It built a Sensory Space facility. Within this space are two rooms where therapeutic techniques are at play. Lights are calming and special seats are available to help travellers relax. There are bubble tubes and interactive activities, too. The space is available free of charge, with sessions lasting 45 minutes for every booking. It is located near Gate D43 and it is open 24/ at AUH, there are trained staff members who wear sunflower pins, conveying a message that they are ready to support people with "hidden disabilities". Those who need assistance may also wear special lanyards available at the pre-check-in area. These gestures and symbols signal that help is always within reach. The AUH is "one of only three in the Middle East to have implemented a globally recognised identification system to support passengers who may require additional assistance without attracting unwanted attention", Aletihad reported earlier. In a Mall A mall is another environment that can be overstimulating for those with autism. This is why Yas Mall makes sure there's somewhere they can head to for some peace and quiet. Called The Quiet Room, this safe space allows children and adults on the spectrum to block out all the noise and mall collaborated with the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) so that its "visitors with autism have an exclusive place to feel at ease when the world becomes a bit too big or boisterous for comfort", it said on its website. The Quiet Room is located on Yas Mall's Level G, next to The Male Prayer Hall. An Interactive Showroom To build empathy and raise awareness, a unique initiative in the capital shows people what it's like to have autism. In its Al Bahia headquarters, the ZHO has opened the Middle East's first interactive showroom for assistive technology. Among its key features is the Autism Virtual Reality Experience, which allows individuals to experience the sensory challenges faced by those on the spectrum. Elevated Autism Care Besides these public services, Abu Dhabi authorities are also ensuring that high standards of care are maintained for people of determination. In September 2024, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) released comprehensive guidelines to elevate autism care in the department's new Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Guidelines for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is primarily aimed at setting the stage for improved access to ABA therapy. "ABA is a kind of research-based behavior therapy for people with autism and other developmental disorders. Its goal is to see an increase in positive behaviours and a decrease in negative behaviours," the DoH explained in a statement. The guide is designed to enhance the collaboration between healthcare and education professionals and deliver holistic care for those with ASD."By ensuring that ABA services are standarised and accessible, we reaffirm our commitment to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system where collaboration between healthcare and education thrives to enhance the health and well-being of all community members," Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Healthcare Workforce Planning at the DoH, said in a previous statement. "Abu Dhabi is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that ensures equitable access for people of determination, empowering them to reach their full potential," he said.
