The announcement comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of her passing, which is being commemorated throughout 2025 as the official Year of Umm Kulthum. The musical, set to premiere in September 2025, is being developed in collaboration with See Cinema Productions, with support from the Commercial International Bank (CIB) as the project's official sponsor. According to producers, the production will blend theatrical storytelling with modern technology, aiming to reintroduce Umm Kulthum's cultural significance to younger audiences while honouring her timeless influence. The project was unveiled during a press conference attended by producers Hany Naguib and Ahmed Fahmy, director Ahmed Fouad, and legal advisor Dr. Hossam Lotfy. Present were also the heirs of Umm Kulthum and legendary composers Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Baligh Hamdi, and Riad El Sonbaty—key collaborators in her iconic musical journey. While few details have been released about casting or format, the musical is expected to be one of several cultural initiatives rolled out as part of the national commemoration. The Year of Umm Kulthum includes concerts, exhibitions, and educational programmes designed to highlight her legacy as not just a singer, but a symbol of Arab identity and artistic excellence.

The tribute aligns with the Ministry of Culture's nationwide designation of 2025 as 'The Year of Umm Kulthum', honouring her enduring influence across generations. This year's AIWFF poster features a stylised portrait of the iconic vocalist, designed by Egyptian visual artist Hisham Ali, who is known for creating signature poster art for prominent cultural events and festivals. The design draws from Umm Kulthum's signature aesthetic—complete with her iconic sunglasses and scarf—while connecting it to the visual language of contemporary cinema. The AIWFF has steadily grown into one of Egypt's most prominent platforms for celebrating women's contributions to cinema, especially in Upper Egypt. Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Her Passing, The Ministry of Culture Designates 2025 as the Year of Umm Kulthum
The Ministry of Culture has designated 2025 as the Year of Umm Kulthum, launching a year-long tribute to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic singer's passing. The initiative will feature concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events celebrating her lasting influence. The Cairo Opera House will host several performances, including a major concert at the Philharmonie de Paris, where the Arab Music Orchestra, led by Maestro Alaa Abdel Salam, will accompany singers Rehab Omar and Eman Abdel Ghany. In Egypt, the opera house will organize two special concerts at the Arab Music Institute and introduce a nationwide talent competition, Discovering Umm Kulthum 2025, to find young vocalists who capture her unique style. The General Authority for Cultural Palaces will launch the Umm Kulthum Festival for Music and Singing in February, beginning in her hometown, Tamay El Zahayra. The festival will feature a documentary screening, a storytelling workshop, an art exhibition, and performances by the Mansoura Arab Music Ensemble and folk troupes. At the Cairo International Book Fair, a special section will be dedicated to Umm Kulthum, showcasing musical performances and an exhibition of rare documents and photographs at the National Library and Archives. The Cultural Development Fund will organize further events in Cairo and Alexandria, including a documentary screening and discussion at the Naguib Mahfouz Museum, two concerts at the Umm Kulthum Museum, and a seminar in Alexandria. Children's workshops at the Beit Al-Aini Children's Creativity Centre will introduce younger generations to her remarkable legacy.
