Sligo v Carlow LIVE score updates from the Tailteann Cup prelims
Sligo host Carlow this afternoon in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry in the preliminary quarter-final stage of the Tailteann Cup. The Yeats County have their eyes set on going deep into the competition after semi-final exits in 2022 and 2024. Sligo gave a spirited fightback in the second half against Kildare last time out, losing by four in the end in Roscommon. Sligo dig deep to get the better of battling Leitrim
Tailteann Cup group 1: Sligo 2-19 (2-4-11) Leitrim 1-18 (1-2-14) A more experienced Sligo side had to dig deep in the second half to get the better of a plucky Leitrim outfit at Carrick-on-Shannon where the Yeats County gained a four-point win. Goals in the final 35 minutes by Darragh Cummins and Jack Lavin were crucial. Despite playing with 14 men for ten minutes of the first half following the black carding of Cillian McGloin, Leitrim enjoyed the better of the exchanges and deservedly led by three points at the break. Leitrim opened brightly when Ben Guckian whipped over a second minute two-pointer and seconds later Keith Keegan put the home side further ahead when he split the Sligo uprights. In reply the Sligo men got their account opened when Niall Murphy tapped over a free on the three-minute mark. Riordan O'Rourke kept Leitrim in the driving seat with another point from play two minutes later. Sligo narrowed the gap to the minimum eight minutes into the action thanks to points apiece by Alan Reilly and Paddy O'Connor. Neither side managed to raise a flag of any description for another ten minutes until David Quinn whipped over an 18th minute Sligo point to level matters. But Leitrim got their noses in front again almost immediately with a Riordan O'Rourke point. Leitrim led at half-time - 0-11 to 0–8 - after outgunning Sligo in the remainder of the half with a Barry McNulty two-pointer from a placed ball plus a single free conversion while Tom Prior chipped in with two points with Darren Cox adding a point. The Sligo men closed out the first half with points each from Paddy O'Connor, Cian Lally and David Quinn. Following the restart a 42nd minute Barry McNulty goal gave the home side a seven-point advantage. But then Sligo turned the tables on their opponents when Darragh Cummins palmed home a goal five minutes later with sub Jack Lavin finding the Leitrim net with another palmed effort within the space of four more minutes. Cummins' goal for Sligo levelled matters on 1-14 all but a Tom Prior Leitrim point shortly afterwards put the home side back in front for just a brief two minute spell. In reply David Quinn brought Sligo back on level terms for a fourth time in the showdown. Shortly afterwards Jack Lavin's goal put the Sligo men into a lead they never relinquished. Sligo finished out the half with a late two-pointer from Paddy O'Connor and just prior to that Dylan McHugh had whipped over a point. Leitrim staged a late rally in the closing minutes of the action when they hit back points from Darren Cox (free) and James Rooney. In this period Leitrim created two goal chances one of which was denied by excellent goal line defending by the Sligo rearguard while the other chance to find the visitors' net fell to Barry McNulty who blazed his effort inches wide across the goal mouth.
