On this day in 2024: 'old York meets New York' during trade mission

On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that a delegation from York had arrived in New York on a four-day mission to boost trade and friendship ties with the US city. The delegation included the Lord Mayor of York, the Archbishop of York, representatives from the University of York and York St John, and business leaders. They were set to take part in a series of business networking events and discussions, including a mini 'Great Yorkshire Show' (to promote York and North Yorkshire) at the British Consulate General. The visit, billed as 'old York meets New York,' was to culminate in a special service at Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue, where a friendship 'ledger stone,' designed and carved at York Minster, was to be unveiled. This ledger stone was to mark a century of friendship between the cities: New York presented York with a memorial tablet, alongside a message from the then US President, in 1924. Sarah Czarnecki, president of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "Trade missions like this were once commonplace but they have become expensive. "Each business is paying for their own flights and accommodation and we have designed an itinerary to ensure business connections are made. "This is a forward-thinking move by the Chamber to provide a valuable opportunity for those looking to explore new markets." The trade mission was organised by the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, with the Minster leading on the ceremonial aspects of the visit.

York St John lecturer uses AI to create music genre, 'Infinity Wave'

A university lecturer claims to have created a new music genre using artificial intelligence (AI). Dr Somdip Dey, a data science lecturer at York St John University, used AI to analyse trends in electronic dance music (EDM) and thereby develop a new sub-genre, known as 'Infinity Wave.' The AI examined data metrics such as festival line-ups and attendance, streaming data, social media and media coverage, influences, and music popularity to "understand the growing trends in EDM and to pinpoint what sounds, structures, and production techniques were resonating most with listeners," per a spokesperson. The AI findings helped Dr Dey, who also goes under the moniker of InteliDey, to create the single 'I Don't Think,' using traditional music-making techniques. The new genre combines the styles of melodic techno, future rave, and progressive house. Dr Dey said: "As a lecturer in Data Science at York St John and a producer pushing the boundaries in AI-driven music research, Infinity Wave presents an exciting intersection of music and technology that directly benefits our students. "My research into AI-driven music analysis showcases how machine learning and big data can be applied to the creative industries. "Students at York St John are increasingly exploring how AI can generate insights beyond traditional sectors, and Infinity Wave offers a real-world case study. "Infinity Wave also introduces an entirely new production methodology that bridges traditional electronic music production with AI-enhanced creative insights. "I actively encourage students to experiment with AI as a tool for ideation and sound design." Dr Dey is currently building an online tutorial to teach how to use AI to analyse music data. He has several new music projects underway that incorporate Infinity Wave, including collaborations with other producers; and he also plans to develop live performances that fully immerse audiences in the Infinity Wave experience with the help of visuals, lighting, and evolving landscapes. InteliDey's track, 'I Don't Think,' is available now on streaming platforms.
