PHOTOS: Severe storm damage across metro Atlanta, North Georgia

The Brief Metro Atlanta is working to recover from the overnight severe weather that left fallen trees and downed power lines in its wake. In Paulding County, the storm destroyed a gas station near the intersection of Hay Renfroe Drive and Villa Rica Highway. Tens of thousands of customers across the state remain without power as crews work to restore services. Severe weather swept through metro Atlanta from Saturday night into Sunday morning, leaving a trail of damage in its wake. FOX 5 Atlanta crews captured damage during the storms as well as the aftermath: While the storm has passed through metro Atlanta, the damage caused by the strong winds and heavy rain remained. On Howell Mill Road in Buckhead, a large fallen tree has blocked the road and toppled power lines. A similar situation could be found on Collier Road and Northside Drive. This tree knocked down power lines on both roads - leading to crews dealing with multiple outages caused by a single tree. On North Olympian Way in southwest Atlanta, the trunk of a tree remained suspended on the power lines, creating enough damage to leave more residents in the dark. STORM ALERT DAY: Severe thunderstorms, flash flood warning | Tornadoes risks, more across Georgia Dig deeper Leaders in Paulding County are warning residents to be careful if they go outside on Sunday morning. Paulding County Sheriff Ashley Henson was up all night covering storm damage across his country. At around 2:30 a.m., he hosted a Facebook live in front of a Texaco gas station canopy that appeared to be ripped out of its concrete supports and flipped over near the intersection of Hay Renfroe Drive and Villa Rica Highway in Dallas. There are some downed power lines and trees around town. Officials are asking residents to use caution for their own safety. Jordan Youdis, a spokesman for the Paudling County Sheriff's Office, said that the bulk of the storm's damage was on the outskirts of Dallas. He said they were waiting to see the full extent of the damage when the sun comes up. "For a moment, there seemed like there was going to be a second batch of storms. Thankfully, we didn't get that," Youdis said. "We got some wind and some pretty heavy rain, but our folks worked right through that, checking to make sure everyone was OK." While falling trees trapped some Paulding County residents inside their homes, crews with the fire department and deputies were able to get them out safely. Youdis said the county has been lucky that injuries seem to have been minimal. Thousands of Georgians remain without power after the severe storm system passed through Georgia overnight. As of 6:45 a.m., more than 62,000 customers in the state were without power. The majority of those power outages are concentrated in the northeast corner of Georgia, including Fannin, Rabun, Towns, and Union counties. In Atlanta's Morningside neighborhood, FOX 5's Lindsay Tuman spotted a large tree that had blocked part of the sidewalk and left the area in the dark. Georgia Power said its crews are responding to the damage "as quickly as conditions allow."
