Man ran up 'very significant bill' at Cork hotel and left without paying

A former medical device engineer who ran up a 'very significant bill' during a three-night stay at an East Cork hotel has been ordered to pay compensation or face a year in prison. Sergeant Majella O'Sullivan told Youghal District Court that Peter White, 57, with an address at Travelodge, Kinsale Road, Cork, had been staying at Aherne's Townhouse in Youghal, Co Cork in April 2024. The court was told Mr White ran up a bill of €987 during his three-night stay, which included accommodation and food and drink. He left the hotel on April 28, 2024, without paying the bill. The court heard Mr White also drove to Forde's Circle K in Youghal where he filled his BMW X3 with €20 worth of diesel and also took a coffee worth €3.30 and left the premises without paying for the fuel or the drink. Defence solicitor James Moore said Mr White 'cannot really explain this offending'. He said Mr White was facing 'a number of similar matters' he was 'trying to clear'. He said that his client was previously a medical device engineer for 10 years and was a 'well qualified man'. He said Mr White had pleaded guilty and would need four weeks to repay the money. Judge Brian O'Shea said he regarded such offending as 'grievous'. 'He's not going to walk from this one 15 months later. It's outrageous to run up a bill of nearly a grand and just walk away.' The judge added it was a 'very significant bill' that would cause any small local business difficulty if it was not paid. The judge said Mr White had had 15 months to pay back the monies owed but had 'done nothing'. James White was ordered to pay €1,500 compensation to the injured parties, to be divided on a pro-rata basis. He was also sentenced to a total of one year in prison suspended for 18 months on the condition the compensation is paid. He was remanded on bail to appear again in a month's time to confirm the compensation was paid. This article is funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme

Man delivering drugs to wrong house in Youghal was caught by doorbell video footage

A man who posted three packages of cocaine through the letterbox of the wrong house in Youghal, Co Cork, was identified from footage recorded by the property's video doorbell, the district court has heard. Court presenter Sergeant Majella O'Sullivan told Youghal District Court that the incident occurred on December 23, 2023. A resident in the town discovered three plastic bags containing white powder that had been posted through their letterbox. It was later confirmed that the bags contained cocaine. The court was told that the accused man, Jack Kenneally, aged 24 of Raheen Park in Youghal was identified putting the packages through the letterbox by footage recorded on a video doorbell. Following his identification, a warrant was obtained to search Mr Kenneally's address where quantities of cocaine and cannabis were found in his bedroom. The total value of the drugs seized was €238 in cocaine and €20 in cannabis. The court heard that Mr Kenneally had made full admissions and had no previous convictions. The court was told that on the night in question he had been out drinking with friends and was asked to drop the packages off as a favour. The court heard that he was 'highly embarrassed' by what had happened and had not been in trouble since. Judge Brian O'Shea said the incident sounded like 'something from a YouTube video'. He said that as the incident with the letterbox was a first offence he would give Mr Kenneally the benefit of the Probation Act. For the drugs found at his home he was convicted and fined €500 for the cocaine and given six months to pay. The cannabis was taken into consideration. Man shouted racial abuse at passerby on East Cork street

The behaviour of a man who shouted racial abuse at another man who was walking down the street was described as outrageous by a district court judge. Sergeant Majella O'Sullivan told Youghal District Court the incident occurred on the afternoon of September 2, 2024, on Main Street in Youghal. The victim reported he had been approached by the accused, Eugene Quirke, 47 of South Main Street, Youghal, who began to verbally abuse him. The court heard Mr Quirke asked the victim: 'What the fuck are you looking at?' And called him a 'rat' and a 'Paki cunt'. When the injured party told Mr Quirke not to threaten him, the accused 'came up behind him and said: "I will threaten you.' Defence solicitor James Moore said his client had been drinking vodka before the incident and could not remember it. He said Mr Quirke deeply regretted it and did not dispute what happened. He said his client would apologise to the injured party but was advised to have no contact with him. He said although Mr Quirke had 15 previous convictions, the most recent was 11 years ago. Judge Brian O'Shea said: 'How can someone go from repairing the boardwalk to going out and insulting and abusing a man in a racist way? The excuse that he was drunk makes it even worse, that he got so drunk he went out and did this.' Judge O'Shea adjourned the matter to allow Mr Quirke to gather €400 in compensation for the injured party and to write a letter of apology. He said if this was done, Mr Quirke would be convicted and fined €300. The judge said the alternative would be a three-month prison sentence. This article is funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme
