Ryan Gravenberch ban truth as Community Shield theory debunked after Liverpool red card
Ryan Gravenberch will not miss the Community Shield due to the red card he received on the final day of the Premier League season. Instead, the midfielder's suspension will carry over to the start of the new league campaign in August. It means Gravenberch, who played 49 games this term, will be eligible for the annual curtain raiser when Liverpool takes on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. The date for that match has not been set but it will be played at Wembley on the weekend of August 9-10. The new Premier League season will start the following week, with the initial fixture list to be released on June 18. The midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute of the Reds' final match of the season, also against Palace. Having miscontrolled the ball as Liverpool's last man back, Gravenberch lunged to regain possession but instead felled Daichi Kamada with the Palace man set to have a clear run at goal. Referee Darren England had little choice but to administer a straight red card despite teammate Virgil van Dijk's remonstrations. It meant a disappointing end to what was a fantastic season for Gravenberch, who won the Premier League Young Player of the Year Award. The 23-year-old started 37 of the 38 league games, the exception being the trip to Chelsea immediately after Liverpool was crowned champion. He is also likely to be selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season. Gravenberch's transformation into a holding midfielder proved to be integral to Liverpool's successful campaign, especially after missing out on Martin Zubimendi the previous summer. The Dutchman's impressive displays, flanked alongside Alexis Mac Allister were instrumental in Liverpool amassing such a huge lead at the top of the table heading into the spring months. 'During a phone call in the first conversation I had with Arne, he said to me: 'I see you as a No.8 but I want to try you as a No.6'," Gravenberch told The Athletic in a recent interview. "I played there against Manchester United in pre-season and after that game, he just put me there. I was like: 'OK, let's do it'. From that moment, I only played as a No.6. "I didn't play a lot in that position before but this season, that position has made me who I am now. I am not naturally a defensive midfielder. I also like to drive forward with the ball. It's been good so far."

ANOTHER right-back set to join Liverpool after Jeremie Frimpong
Luca Stephenson is a name not many Liverpool fans will have heard of. Yet, he was involved in Liverpool's first team during pre-season last summer. Stephenson made four appearances under Slot, all of them as a right-back, playing an entire half against Arsenal. Advertisement The talented youngster then went on loan to Dundee United where he has enjoyed a terrific season. Stephenson helped Dundee reach a European spot and won the club's Young Player of the Year Award. In the process, he became a key player, often playing as a wing-back and contributing with three goals and two assists in 31 league appearances. But he also showcased his versatility and demonstrated he could play not just as a right-back but in many other positions as well.

Aggie Beever-Jones not keen to slow down after Chelsea's latest WSL triumph
Aggie Beever-Jones still has plenty more she wants to achieve this season after helping guide Chelsea to their sixth Women's Super League title this week. The Chelsea academy graduate has built on her superb breakthrough season in west London in impressive fashion, notching up eight goals so far this season for Sonia Bompastor's side. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old added her second WSL medal to her ever-increasing trophy cabinet after Chelsea took advantage of Arsenal's shock defeat to Aston Villa to wrap up the title with two games remaining. And Beever-Jones' fine season then saw her land the Young Player of the Year Award just 24 hours later at the 2025 Women's Football Awards, a night dominated once again by Chelsea. 'Collectively, it's so nice to win trophies – that's what we aim to do at Chelsea – but for me, it's always good to pick up an individual award,' Beever-Jones told Metro. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'I'm always so aware that it's a team sport and there are so many people who have helped me along the journey, but it's always nice to get that recognition for yourself.' Many would be content enough with the whirlwind 24 hours that Beever-Jones has experienced, but the young forward has not reached such heights so swiftly in her career by resting on her laurels. And while her league triumph with Chelsea may not have fully sunk in yet, Beever-Jones already has new goals. 'We're obviously still unbeaten in the league and we pride ourselves on that, so we're not going to take our foot off the pedal,' she added. 'We've still got another competition to play for (FA Cup), which we're all super excited about and want to win.' And then, what about the Euros in the summer? Beever-Jones had just finished the first loan spell of her career at Bristol City when England triumphed over Germany at Wembley in 2022. But having scored her first goal for the Lionesses back in April, the Chelsea youngster doesn't want to be watching from the stands this time around. 'I'd be lying if I said that (making the squad) isn't the aim and I was delighted to get my first goal the other month,' she added. 'I always like to keep myself focused on the task at hand, and then who knows what will happen. It's about building on that and continuing to improve and I'm in the right place to do that at Chelsea.' Chelsea may be the present, but previous loans at the aforementioned Bristol City and then at Everton are as much a part of Beever-Jones' impressive rise within recent years. More Trending 'I think the person I am now, compared to the person who left on their first loan spell at 18, is two different people in a really good way,' she reflected. 'I've learnt a lot about myself on and off the pitch; moving away from home, you have to grow up a bit quicker and get used to a new environment where you're playing professionally week in, week out. 'But Chelsea feels like home to me. I'm comfortable there and I've got that drive to keep pushing myself every day – I'm really enjoying my time right now.' Raging Rangers fans fume ‘you should've just kept this quiet' as club holds huge event a day after latest disappointment
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT was another weekend to forget for Rangers in what's been a season to forget for the Ibrox club. So it came as a surprise to many Light Blues fans to see many of their players being CELEBRATED last night. Once again, it proved costly with St Mirren twice hitting back in Paisley to secure a 2-2 draw against Barry Ferguson's side. It was a fifth game without a win in all competitions with the Gers not tasting victory for an entire MONTH. It's been a turbulent campaign for the Light Blues who sacked yet another manager, Philippe Clement, with club legend Ferguson seeing out the season. But ultimately, the ex-Gers skipper has failed to ignite a real spark with his side now trailing freshly crowned champions Celtic by 17 points in the Premiership table. Ferguson had challenged his players to finish the campaign with five wins from five - hopes of that have already gone up in smoke just one game in. With the US takeover of the club on the horizon, there are reasons for hope among the fed up Rangers support. But there are still four games to go this season as the current crop of players limp to the league's finish line. Given how the campaign has gone, it was perhaps little surprise that the club's annual player of the year awards event was given next to no fanfare. In fact, many fans seemed to be taken by surprise when the realised it was actually happening! Ian Murray on the day his Hibs team settled for defeat to Rangers The Rangers Player Awards took place in Glasgow last night and many disgruntled supporters weren't at all happy to see players being rewarded for what they see as a campaign of failure. Nicolas Raskin took home the Men's Player of the Year Award with Hamza Igamane taking the Young Player of the Year Award honours. Captain James Tavernier was also honoured after breaking through the 500-appearance mark. The awards for the Rangers Women team were also handed out, and unlike their male counterparts, they are still very much in the mix to win the SWPL title. Goal machine striker Katie Wilkinson took the top honour there. But as far as the men's awards go, plenty of Gers fans felt the entire awards ceremony should have been SCRAPPED altogether. And they weren't shy in taking to social media to make their feelings clear. One Rangers fan said: "Purely an embarrassment (bar youth and women's) that this has been held tonight." A second commented: "In what world did the think 'aye, this will be sound?' Another posted: "Embarrassing beyond belief and you expect me to fork out for a season ticket for next season." 4 A further comment read: "We should be the ones being rewarded for paying to watch them." Another Gers fan said: "Give the awards to the fans." While another said: "Let's keep these in-house lads." Similarly, another commented: "You should have kept all this in house. Embarrassing." Another said: "Should have just kept quiet." While another posted: "Should have cancelled this. An embarrassment to the club." A further Gers fan said: "Shouldn't have bothered." Another commented: "Dreadful optics." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
