National Reconciliation Week 2025: What's happening in the South West

National Reconciliation Week — from May 27 to June 3 — is an important fixture in the Australian calendar where the community is encouraged to get together and learn about our shared history, culture and achievements. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision. This year's theme is Bridging Now to Next, which emphasises the ongoing connection between past, present and the future. Busselton BUSSELTON RECONCILIATION WALK, May 30, 10am-12.30pm Around 200 Elders, community members, students, businesses and community groups are expected to attend Busselton's fourth annual reconciliation walk on Friday, which will start at the Merenj Boodja Bush Garden. After official speeches, the walk — led by Wadandi Elder Gloria Hill — will head to the Busselton foreshore before finishing at the Youth and Community Activities Building. Following the walk, local Aboriginal-owned business Pindari will provide a light lunch and activities. Bunbury BUNBURY WALK FOR RECONCILIATION, June 3, 10am-2.30pm The City of Bunbury and Yaka Dandjoo Events, in partnership with Reconciliation WA, will host their annual walk for reconciliation next Tuesday. The event will start at the Wardandi Boodja statue in Koombana Bay with live music, face painting and a smoking ceremony. The Bunbury community will be invited to walk together at 11.30am along Koombana Drive and across the bridge to the Graham Bricknell Music Shell. A ceremony will then take place at the Shell, including flag-raising, truth-telling guest speakers, dancing and live performances. Bridgetown NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK FILM CLUB, May 28, 6pm-9pm Bridgetown Hub and Gulyara will screen the film Mad Bastards — a story set in the Kimberley region which explores the love of family, the strength of community and the journey towards manhood. A group discussion will take place following the film.

PKR members who are chosen as candidates but then party hop will be expelled

KUALA LUMPUR: The PKR central leadership council meeting on Wednesday night made a policy decision to expel any member who, after being chosen as a candidate for a position within the party, joins another one. Party secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said any member who party hops will automatically lose their candidacy and would automatically lose his or her membership. "The council was informed of the membership status of the candidates who are standing for the 2025 PKR elections. "The council has made a policy decision that any member who, after becoming a candidate, is found to be a member of any other party, will be expelled and his or her candidacy will be nullified. "An announcement of specific names will be made by the party election committee," she said in a statement. Fuziah said the council meeting went smoothly in a spirit of "comradeship" and solidarity. "The meeting also discussed several other issues relating to membership, discipline, the party elections and the party's 2025 National Congress. "The council has confirmed that the national congress will take place in Johor Baru on May 23-25, with the Youth and Wanita congress being held on the first day," she said. Fuziah said the central leadership council also decided that a number of delegates who are required to be physically present from among the branch committee members in Sabah and Sarawak can do so at satellite voting centres in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching instead. "This is to provide convenience to delegates in Sabah and Sarawak who need to vote physically and follow the 2025 National Congress at the satellite centres. "The list of delegates from among the branch committee members from Sabah and Sarawak who will vote physically at the congress will be announced later." Fuziah said the meeting concluded with the full support of its members for the collective decisions made under the leadership of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The council also voiced its support and appreciation of the hard work put in by the election committee led by Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. "All the preparations for the 2025 National Congress are going smoothly and delegates who are eligible to attend will be notified of this soon," she said. The national congress is expected to be attended by 10,000 delegates who will physically cast their votes in the party elections, while 20,000 others will do so online.
