Will develop riverfront project to be best in country: Pune civic chief

Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on Thursday directed officials to develop the city's riverfront project into an iconic, world-class initiative, aiming to make it the best in the country. The civic chief visited the ongoing project near Bund Garden on the occasion of World Environment Day and participated in a tree plantation drive. 'I have seen riverfronts in several foreign countries, and we are working in the same direction. With greater effort, our project has the potential to surpass even the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad,' he said. Yuvraj Deshmukh, incharge, riverfront project said that construction is underway along a 9-km stretch — from Sangamwadi to Bund Garden (3.7km) and Bund Garden to Mundhwa Bridge (5.3km). 'Sections from Sadalbaba to Ganesh Ghat (300 metres) and at Koregaon Park (800 metres) have been completed. We are also replacing invasive tree species with native ones along the riverbank,' he said. Additional municipal commissioner Prithviraj BP aid, 'To mark World Environment Day, PMC planted 1,250 trees, each between 10 and 15 feet tall. Of these, 850 were planted on forest land, 150 at Yerawada Jail, and 250 along the riverfront project.'

Building Pune: Ten more double-decker bridges proposed by Pune civic body in city

After successfully constructing a double-decker bridge with a metro route on top on Karve road and Ganeshkhind road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed ten more such bridges in various parts of the city to ease vehicular traffic. The PMC will join hands with the agency implementing the metro project in the city for the double decker bridge. The cost of the first floor for vehicular traffic is borne by the civic body while the top floor is constructed with funds for metro projects. The double-decker bridge at Nal Stop on Karve road is jointly constructed by PMC and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) and is currently operational. The double-decker bridge on Ganeshkhind road is being jointly constructed by PMC and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), developing the metro rail route from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. The double-decker bridges have been proposed at Mundhwa Mahatma Phule chowk, Kalubai chowk on Solapur road, Dandekar Pul chowk, Wagholi Awhalwadi chowk, Ambedkar chowk in Warje, Kothrud Bus depot in Bhusari colony, Golibar Maidan chowk, Viman Nagar chowk, Wanowrie Fatimanagar chowk and Ravidarshan in Manjari. The civic body has sought financial assistance for the construction of the first floor of the bridge and requires Rs 60 crore for Mundhwa Mahatma Phule chowk, Rs 35 crore for Kalubai chowk on Solapur road and Rs 45 crore for Dandekar Pul chowk. 'The double decker bridges in parts of the city have been proposed on routes of the elevated metro. This has been done as no infrastructure project can be taken up after construction of elevated metro routes on city roads from where the metro route is passing,' said Yuvraj Deshmukh, Chief Engineer of PMC. The metro routes pass through city roads and taking up any infrastructure work like flyovers, underpasses or grade separators to cater to increased vehicular traffic in the future will not be possible due to elevated metro having big pillars on the road and bridge on the top, he said. Deshmukh said, 'A feasibility study is being done by the civic body to ascertain the use of taking up the flyover bridge construction with metro route.' Pune Metro Executive Director Hemant Sonawane said, 'Pune Metro is always ready to construct flyovers for the civic body wherever it is necessary.' Sonwane added that the construction of the flyover on the same pillar as the elevated metro is beneficial to the civic body as they only have to bear the cost of the flyover. 'The Pune civic body will have problems developing road infrastructure with the metro routes so it makes sense to have an advanced plan for both,' said Sonawane. Incidentally, the flyover constructed by PMC on Sinhagad road faced opposition from citizens alluding to the metro route proposed on the road. Union minister Nitin Gadkari, while laying foundation stone for the flyover project, had urged the PMC to explore the possibility to construct a double decker flyover with the metro route but the ruling state govt went ahead with a single-flyover construction.

One side of Sinhagad Road flyover to be inaugurated by Ajit Pawar

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will inaugurate one side of the Sinhagad road flyover – from Vithalwadi to Funtime theatre – on Thursday, a move which is aimed at easing traffic flow on the route and comes as a big relief for residents. The Pune Municipal Corporation has completed work of its 2.2 km long lane of one side while the work of opposite side lane of 1.54 km long from Indian Hume Pipe to Inamdar chowk will be completed in June. 'PMC completed phase one of the project which is 520 metre long flyover on Sinhagad road at Rajaram bridge chowk in August last year. The focus had then shifted to complete the largest part of the flyover in phase two that will allow commuters to avoid five traffic signals on the congested road. The second phase included a 2.12-km flyover on one side from Vithalwadi to Fun Time theatre and a 1.54-km flyover from Indian Hume Pipe to Inamdar chowk. The project was implemented at cost of Rs 118.37 crore and additional Rs 27 crore for metro pillars,' a statement released by the PMC on Wednesday read. 'One side of the flyover is opening on Friday to the public. The PMC will complete the work on the second side of the flyover in June after which it will be inaugurated,' said Yuvraj Deshmukh, Chief Engineer of PMC. The flyover project will help motorists avoid traffic signals at Vitthalwadi, Hingne Khurd, Anandnagar, Bramha hotel and Goel Ganga chowk while going from Vithalwadi to Funtime theatre on Sinhagad road. The other lane of the flyover will help avoid traffic signals at Bramha hotel, Anandnagar and Hingne Khurd. The objective of the flyover is to address the traffic chaos at Rajaram bridge junction and ease the traffic flow on Sinhagad road, making it easier for pedestrians to cross the road. It will make travel to Swargate much easier and also help in fuel consumption for vehicles that otherwise get stuck in traffic jams. The flyover work had got delayed after it was decided to make provision for constructing pillars for metro stations on the proposed metro route from Khadakwasla to Hadapsar via Swargate.

Building Pune: 2.12 km stretch of Sinhagad road flyover to open next month

The much awaited flyover on Sinhagad road is all set to open for public soon as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has almost completed work of its 2.2 km long lane from Vithalwadi to Funtime theatre while the work on the opposite lane of 1.54 km from Indian Hume Pipe to Inamdar chowk will be completed in June. The PMC completed Phase-1 of the project which is a 520 metre long flyover on Sinhagad road at Rajaram bridge chowk in August last year, after the opposition criticised the civic administration for delaying its inauguration due to unavailability of ministers. The focus had then shifted to complete the largest part of the flyover in Phase-2 that will allow commuters to avoid five traffic signals on the congested road. The project is pegged at Rs 118.37 crore and additional Rs 27 crore for the metro pillars. The second phase includes a 2.12-km flyover on one side from Vithalwadi to Fun Time theatre and a 1.54-km flyover from Indian Hume Pipe to Inamdar chowk. 'The work of the 2.12 km lane is complete except for signages and other small things. It can be opened by next week. However, the work of the opposite 1.54 km stretch will be complete only in June,' said Yuvraj Deshmukh, Chief Engineer of PMC. Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale inspected the 2.12 km long flyover to check its completion. The flyover work was delayed after it was decided to make provision for constructing pillars for metro stations on the proposed metro route from Khadakwasla to Hadapsar via Swargate. 'The foundation for pillars of the proposed metro station for elevated routes at Manik Baug and Hingane Khurd has been done. It has increased the project cost by additional Rs 27 crore,' he said. There was a controversy over the project as it falls on Pune Metro's planned route. Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who laid the foundation stone for the project three years ago, had urged officials to explore the possibility of a two-storey bridge with Metro on top and a bridge for vehicles on the first floor, similar to Karve road in the city and a few places in Nagpur. The Metro work is likely to start after the flyover is complete as it is awaiting approval of the state government.
