New 'Resident Evil' Movie Director Will Respect The Lore While Taking Creative Liberties

The Resident Evil film franchise has taken some unique directions over the years while loosely adapting the iconic video game series of the same name. While some of these adaptations are closer to the games than others, Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger has been tapped to do his own take that will respect the lore while also taking creative liberties. Cregger revealed his plans for the new reboot while speaking with SFX Magazine. He first emphasized that he's a big fan of the video games, and that he's 'played them all,' while Resident Evil 4 is one title in particular that he's 'just looped again and again.' 'I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it,' he began. 'I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.' He also acknowledged that he might receive backlash for his creative decisions, but ultimately, he hopes to create 'a really good movie.' As such, he hopes that fans will be proud of it in the same way that he will be. 'I don't think I'm breaking any major rules,' Cregger said, 'but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. So all I want to do is make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling. I know I'm going to be proud of it, and hopefully others will be too.' With the divisiveness of Resident Evil movie adaptations, the Weapons director will have to work hard to make sure fans are satisfied, especially if he's planning his own creative liberties. If he manages to respect the franchise's style and lore, however, then perhaps fans will be willing to accept some changes. Resident Evil is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated adaptation as we have them. Hopefully the new film will still satisfy fans of the franchise, even if it's not a completely 'obedient' adaptation of the games.

WEAPONS Director Teases Secret Cast and Wild Twists - 'I Probably Shouldn't Even Say That' — GeekTyrant

Zach Cregger knows how to pull the rug out from under audiences. After Barbarian blindsided viewers with its unpredictable structure and grotesque surprises, Cregger's next horror outing, Weapons , is shaping up to be ambitious, and even more secretive. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, the director teased what's coming in his next film, saying: 'I've got to be so careful about spoilers, but here's what I will say. This movie has more twists and turns than Barbarian, but what it doesn't do, very intentionally, is I never abandon the audience.' The marketing for Weapons , from its ominous teaser to the unsettling posters, has been intentionally cryptic. The story revolves around a small town where all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, leaving the town rattled and reaching for answers. But if you think the mystery ends there, think again. According to Cregger, what we've seen so far barely scratches the surface. 'There's a couple of names that aren't in the cast announcement, and there's a couple of [actors] that I think people have not realised what a big deal their characters will be. 'That's great, and I probably shouldn't even say that, but there are some actors that... it's amazing what they do… There are seven main characters in this movie and the trailer, we're leaning into two of those. But there are truly seven main characters.' Well, that's interesting! I also love the fact that what we've seen from the trailers gives us the bare minimum of what this movie entails, and I can't wait to see how this dark horror story unfolds. The announced cast already includes heavy hitters like Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Alden Ehrenreich, alongside Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. But, Cregger is intentionally hiding sonme other major players. And just like with Barbarian, the trailer might be a masterclass in misdirection. Cregger explains: 'The engine of the children leaving is the engine of the whole movie, but the mystery is not the engine of the whole movie.' So there's a much larger narrative hiding beneath the surface. This movie is going to get really interesting! Weapons opens in theaters on August 8th, and if Cregger's words are any indication, this one's going to be a wild, secret-packed ride.

Zach Cregger's 'Resident Evil' Movie Won't Be "Completely Obedient" To Games

Zach Cregger, director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot, has admitted that his adaptation will not be a one-for-one retelling of the games, and that it won't be 'completely obedient' to its lore. Speaking during an interview with SFX, Cregger reassured fans by stating how much of a Resident Evil fan he was, and exclaimed that he didn't know how many times he had replayed Resident Evil 4 . He didn't explain how his take will differ from its source material, but said that it will still remain authentic to the essence of the games. Resident Evil 2 (2019) 'I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don't think I'm breaking any major rules, but I also recognise that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online,' Cregger said, 'So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling. I know that I'm gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.' Only time will tell how the movie will differ from the games, and in what specific way. For now, all that's confirmed from the project is its single announced actor, Euphoria's Austin Abrams, who will take on a yet-to-be-announced role. The movie has not begun filming yet, but it will be based on a script co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten ( Ballerina ). Resident Evil HD Remaster (2015) This isn't the only film in Cregger's pipeline either, as he is also set to work with Abrams once more in the upcoming mystery thriller Weapons , which stars Josh Brolin ( Dune ) and Julia Garner ( Wolf Man ) and follows a set of mysterious disappearances in a small-town community. The film is set for release on 8 August, giving Cregger time after to fully commit himself to the Resident Evil movie, which is due out on 18 September 2026. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Resident Evil Resident Evil Movie Zach Cregger

Resident Evil reboot won't be ‘completely obedient to the lore of the games', director says

Zach Cregger has said his Resident Evil movie reboot won't be 'completely obedient to the lore of the games'. The 44-year-old filmmaker is set to helm the next movie adaptation of Capcom's iconic horror video game franchise of the same name, and while Cregger has insisted his Resident Evil reboot won't break 'any major rules', he also won't be beholden to what has been established in the gaming series. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Cregger said: 'I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [Resident Evil 4] again and again. I just love it. 'I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games.' The Barbarian director added he wanted to make a movie that 'feels authentic to the experience' of playing the Resident Evil games. He continued: 'I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don't think I'm breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. 'So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling. I know that I'm gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.' The Resident Evil reboot hasn't started principal photography yet, and little is known about the movie's plot. However, it has been reported that the new Resident Evil film - which Cregger co-wrote with Shay Hatten - will follow a struggling courier assigned to deliver a package to a remote hospital. Along the way, he becomes trapped in the midst of a viral outbreak and must battle his way through swarms of mutated creatures to survive. Austin Abrams - who collaborated with Cregger on the director's upcoming horror flick Weapons - is reportedly attached to the Resident Evil reboot, though the 28-year-old actor's involvement in the project is yet to be officially confirmed. Resident Evil has featured on the big screen since 2002 with the eponymous horror flick, which starred Milla Jovovich as the action heroine Alice. The film received five sequels, with the fifth and last entry in the series, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, releasing in 2016. In 2021, Resident Evil was rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City - which starred Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy and Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield. After it was announced Cregger would be helming the next Resident Evil movie for Sony Pictures, it was confirmed the film would return to the 'original roots' of the gaming franchise and hit screens on September 18, 2026. Cregger told Deadline: 'I've been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honour.'

Zach Cregger Says His New Horror Film WEAPONS Is 'Funnier, Scarier, and Weirder Than BARBARIAN' — GeekTyrant

If Barbarian left you speechless and slightly afraid of basements forever, buckle up, because Zach Cregger's next horror movie, Weapons , is coming for your brain in a whole new way. According to Cregger, it's not only bigger than Barbarian , it's 'a lot weirder.' In a recent chat with Empire, the filmmaker talked about what he can expect from the film: 'It's a fun movie. It's funny, it's scary, it's inviting. It's not a grim, morose slog. And yet the story it tells is really f*cked up.' The words 'fun' and 'really f*cked up' rarely go hand in hand, but if anyone can thread that needle, it's the guy who made Barbarian , the 2022 sleeper hit that went from Airbnb awkwardness to full-blown subterranean nightmare. That movie took some wild and unnexpected twists and turns and Weapons looks like it's set to push even further into the unexpected. This time, Cregger is diving deep into more personal territory. While Barbarian wrestled with broader social themes, Weapons is pulling from something a bit closer to home. He said: 'Barbarian was an exploration of social themes; [it] was me looking at the world around me. This is more an exploration of my own personal shit, for lack of a better word. Weapons is me looking within, and working on myself.' The film centers on a disturbing premise, and is set in a small quiet town and one morning, every child in the same class disappears at the exact same time… 2:17am, except for one. That's a creepy setup and in watchng the trailer I don't see much humor, but that';s expect what Cregger is teasing. The cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan, and it's clear this thing's got serious scary bite. The movie opens in theaters on August 8th.
