NBA Announces Major Zach Edey News on Tuesday
Zach Edey's rookie season in the NBA was filled with challenges, but it ended on a high note. The 23-year-old big man from Purdue battled through an up-and-down year with the injury-plagued Memphis Grizzlies, who still managed to win 48 regular-season games. After advancing past the play-in round, Memphis was swept in four games by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs. Advertisement Despite the early playoff exit, Edey gained valuable experience, appearing in 66 games and carving out a consistent role in the paint. On Tuesday, his efforts were recognized when the NBA announced its 2024-25 Kia All-Rookie Teams. The NBA posted the results on social media, revealing Edey made the All-Rookie First Team, receiving 73 first-place votes: Edey's rookie campaign wasn't without obstacles. Memphis fired head coach Taylor Jenkins with just nine games remaining in the season, appointing Tuomas Iisalo as interim coach. The Grizzlies removed the interim tag earlier this month, naming Iisalo the head coach heading into the 2025-26 season. Advertisement At Purdue, Edey was known for his dominance inside, and he brought that same physicality to the NBA. He averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, shooting an efficient 58% from the field and an impressive 34.6% from 3-point range, a rare skill set for a player of his size. In the postseason, Edey scored nine points in Game 3 and eight in Game 4 but never broke double digits. He averaged 7.8 rebounds per game in the series against the Thunder. Edey was joined on the First Team by his Grizzlies teammate Jaylen Wells. Rounding out the team were: Stephon Castle (San Antonio Spurs), who earned unanimous first-team honors Zaccharie Risacher (Atlanta Hawks), who received only one second-team vote Alex Sarr (Washington Wizards), who narrowly beat out Kel'el Ware (Miami Heat) for the final spot Edey is under contract with the Grizzlies for four years, having signed a deal worth $26.2 million. He'll earn just over $6 million per year through the 2026-27 season, with his salary increasing to $8 million in 2027-28. He's set to become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2028.
