Edmonton Oilers-Florida Panthers II: Will it be heartache or revenge?
Article content Aside from the huge impact of losing Zach Hyman for the rest of the playoffs, the Oilers look Stanley Cup ready in every aspect of the game. Article content The offence goes without saying — they have Draisaitl and Connor McDavid and on top of that 11 different players have three or more goals. The defence shut Vegas out in the last two games of that series and held Dallas to 12 total shots in the third periods of Games 3, 4, and 5. Article content And Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard (combined salary $3.6 million) have eliminated $19.75 million worth of opposition goalies so far. Article content If everyone can elevate just a little more, it might be enough. Article content 'If it's going to change (from last year) we have to play our best hockey,' said Knoblauch. 'A lot of credit to Florida, they might be even better than they were last year. For a team to get there three years in a row, that's not by accident. Article content Article content 'I think we have a chance but we're going to have to be at our best to give ourselves that opportunity.' Article content Why will it be different this time? Connor McDavid believes losing Game 7 of a Cup Final strengthens a team's resolve like nothing else can. Article content 'I think we're better for going through last year, it was a great learning experience and it's really driven us all year,' he said, adding he can already feel it in the room. 'I think this run has felt different from last year, it's felt very normal. It hasn't been emotional. We haven't had the highs and lows, it's just kind of been steady. Article content 'That's put us in a good position. Those games can be emotionally draining and we're not drained. We have a lot of depth. We have as good a chance as they do.' Article content And the whole revenge thing? If it works out that way, great, but believe the Oilers when they tell you it doesn't matter who they're playing, this is all about finishing the job. Article content Article content 'Quite honestly, it doesn't matter,' said defenceman Darnell Nurse. 'When you're in this position you just want to give yourself an opportunity to compete for a Stanley Cup. It so happens it's going to be a rematch. They're a really good team, they present a big challenge, but we have a lot of belief in our group. Article content 'It's a resilient group that has a lot of belief in each other and we earned ourselves an opportunity to go back to the Stanley Cup Finals. There is a hunger in knowing what's coming and the opportunity that's ahead. We're all excited to get the next series going.'

Zach Hyman injury update: Oilers winger has surgery, likely done for playoffs
Edmonton Oilers star winger Zach Hyman is likely gone for the rest of the postseason after having surgery for a Game 4 injury. "We're not expecting him back for the playoffs," said coach Kris Knoblauch, who didn't specify which injury Hyman suffered when he left the game on a hit by the Dallas Stars' Mason Marchment during the first period. The Oilers won the game 4-1 to take a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals. Hyman scored 70 goals last season between the regular season and the playoffs. This season, he has 11 points in 15 playoff games and a league-leading 111 hits in the postseason, nearly 30 more than the next player. Zach Hyman heads to the dressing room after taking a hit from Mason Marchment — Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 28, 2025 "He's not going to be replaced but hopefully everyone can step up a little bit, a few more hits from everyone else throughout the lineup," Knoblauch said Thursday, adding, "Hopefully somebody is going to come up with an important goal.' Offseason acquisition Jeff Skinner, who has played only one playoff game, will rejoin the lineup for the potential clinching Game 5 in Dallas. "The guys have been playing really well, battling really hard," he told reporters on Thursday. "I'll just try to come in and read off those guys and try to keep it simple and try to contribute." Veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm will return from an injury. He last played on April 11. "For him to come back and feeling great, it's a great addition to our team," Knoblauch said. Forward Connor Brown will miss a second consecutive game Thursday with an unspecified injury. Viktor Arvidsson came back in the lineup for Game 4 to replace Brown. Mattias Ekholm makes playoff debut with Edmonton Oilers after injury
Better late than never, Mattias Ekholm has rejoined the Edmonton Oilers on their path to a Stanley Cup Finals rematch against the Florida Panthers. Article content Article content The veteran Swedish defenceman was reinserted into the lineup to make his 2024-25 playoff debut Thursday in Game 5 of the Western Conference final against the Dallas Stars, at the same time Zach Hyman had to be taken out after undergoing surgery to repair a reported broken wrist one day earlier. Article content And while the Oilers will certainly miss Hyman's offence and physicality — he leads the NHL with 111 hits in these playoffs — the blow is softened by the return of the team's staunchest defender for the past two seasons. Article content 'I think that I'm just going to go out and play my game,' Ekholm, who turned 35 last week, said following Thursday's morning skate at American Airlines Center. 'If I go out there and try to play somewhat safe, or whatnot, it's not going to suit us very well anyway. Article content 'So, I'm just going to go out in the first couple shifts and obviously make the simple play. But other than that, I'm looking to play my game. That's how I've been successful in this league, that's how I've got to be. It's going to be probably a little bit harder than normal, knowing that I haven't played in a while, but at the same time, just go out and do my thing, and hopefully that will help the team to success.' Article content The last time we saw Ekholm on the ice was April 11 against the San Jose Sharks, where he lasted all of two shifts, totalling 1:52 of ice time before disappearing down the hallway with training staff. Article content Article content He missed nine of the final 11 regular-season games and 15 of the final 20 with the undisclosed injury. Article content Article content 'Obviously, I came back twice and kind of reaggravated it about two months ago,' he said. 'Just making sure I'm in a good spot where I can not just play, but also withstand some blows. Article content 'And that's what playoffs are all about, you're going to get hit, you're going to get knocked down, and just be able to know that I am strong enough to be in a position where I can not only play, but just defend myself, as well.' Article content 'I feel like I'm ready,' Ekholm said. 'I feel like I can play. Obviously, I haven't played in a while, so it will be a bit of an adjustment, but I feel great. Article content 'I don't think I'm playing 26 minutes, but I do think I'm ready to play somewhat of a normal role.' Article content It looked like Ekholm was nothing short of the linchpin holding the entire Oilers team together when they opened the playoffs without him, with back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Kings, who outscored Edmonton by a combined 12-7 in those games.
