Mason Howell, 17-year-old high school junior, earns spot in 2025 US Open after remarkable qualifier

Mason Howell has one year left of high school, but he will be able to tell his classmates he played in the U.S. Open before he walks at graduation. The 17-year-old Georgia high school junior qualified for the 2025 U.S. Open at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta on Monday after shooting an impressive 18-under-par through two rounds. He is also one of the highest-ranked junior golfers in the country, coming in at No. 8 on the American Junior Golf Association list. However, his feat was remarkable considering he was the 496th-ranked amateur going into Monday's qualifier. "That was one of the greatest moments of my life," Howell said after his two rounds. "Golf's Longest Day" is what the amateur qualifier is called, as golfers must play two full rounds to determine who will participate in the 125th edition of the major tournament, which will be held at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania this year. It was certainly a grueling day, but Howell breezed through his 36 holes without putting a bogey on the scorecard, shooting 63 in both of his rounds to earn his spot in the U.S. Open field. Howell finished tied for first with Jackson Buchanan, a 22-year-old University of Illinois golfer, who also qualified for the tournament. But there weren't just amateurs in the qualifying field. The 2007 Masters winner, Zach Johnson, was among PGA Tour veterans trying to get into the field as well. Only the top-five finishers on the leaderboard can get into Oakmont, and Howell now has tons of momentum heading into the tournament next week. Howell hails from Thomasville, Georgia, where he stars for the Brookwood High School boy's golf team, which won the program's fourth state title in the last five years last month. Despite still having one more year of school left before graduation, he has already committed to remain in-state for the next chapter of his golf career and play for the Georgia Bulldogs. PGA Tour Announces Unfortunate Zach Johnson News Before Charles Schwab Challenge

The PGA Championship concluded this Sunday, with Scottie lifting the Wanamaker Trophy at 11-under. Up next, he's set to tee off at the Charles Schwab Challenge beginning May 22. Before that, PGA Tour announced unfortunate news about a fellow golfer. Zach Johnson has decided to withdraw from the upcoming tournament; the PGA Tour announced on Monday that the $49.8 million golfer will be replaced by Camilo Villegas. Advertisement Will Zalatoris has also chosen to forego his spot and will be replaced by Dylan Wu. Meanwhile, brothers Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard have withdrawn and will be replaced by Akshay Bhatia and William Mouw, respectively. Colonial Country Club's tree-lined, narrow fairways and 29 strategically placed bunkers reward technical precision and penalize errant tee shots, making it one of the Tour's purest ball-striking tests. Winners here receive 500 FedExCup points. Advertisement Strong performances at Colonial often lead to improved priority ranking, as top-10 finishers not only earn substantial points but also qualify for the Aon Next 10, granting access to premier events like the Memorial Tournament. Recent renovations, including a $20 million restoration to recapture Perry Maxwell's classic design, have preserved the course's strategic challenges while modernizing greens and bunker complexes. Besides the World No. 1, defending champion Davis Riley, major winner Hideki Matsuyama, long hitter Maverick McNealy, crafty shotmaker Tommy Fleetwood, and former Masters champ Jordan Spieth will also be participating in the challenge. PGA Tour Sends Message to Caitlin Clark Before Fever-Sky Game

The excitement of WNBA fans has reached fever pitch on Friday as the new season officially gets underway. Supporters of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, however, will need to wait one more day before they see the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year in action. The Fever get their campaign underway on Saturday in a much-awaited matchup against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, and there's no denying that there's already a lot of hype surrounding that highly anticipated clash. Advertisement So much so that even the PGA Tour had to jump on the bandwagon. The organization took a break from all the action of the PGA Championship to send a message to Clark on the eve of Indiana's season opener. "And with that, we'll see you next off season @CaitlinClark22 . The opening week of the @WNBA season tips off tonight! 🏀" the PGA Tour wrote on X. PGA Tour's post featured a few clips of Clark from her appearance at the RSM Classic Pro-Am back in November. At one point in the video, two-time Major winner and fellow Iowa native Zach Johnson, who was paired with Clark during the tournament in Georgia, is seen reacting as Clark hit an impressive drive on the course. Advertisement Clark spent a considerable amount of time during the offseason playing golf, and the PGA Tour is clearly excited to have her back next year. For now, though, Clark is completely locked in on the upcoming WNBA season. The Tour goes down its priority rankings. Players who commit to the tournament get to choose their partner as long as they have some kind of PGA Tour status or receive a sponsor exemption. What is the Zurich Classic of New Orleans format? The teams will compete in fourballs (best ball) in Rounds 1 and 3, and in foursomes (alternate shot) in Rounds 2 and 4. Is there a cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans? Yes. The top 33 teams and ties after 36 holes will qualify for the final two rounds. What happens if there is a playoff after 72 holes? The teams will compete in sudden-death, alternating formats (foursomes on the first extra hole; fourballs on the second extra hole; so forth). What is the prize money and what do the Zurich Classic of New Orleans winners receive? Both men on the winning team will get a two-year exemption on Tour and spots in the PGA Championship as well as next year's Sentry and Players Championship. It counts as an official Tour win for both players, though, no Official World Golf Ranking points are given. Players will be paid out in an every-two-spots manner. So the winning team will evenly split first- and second-place earnings and first- and second-place FedExCup points (400 for each winner). The purse is $9.2 million with each member of the winning team earning $1,329,400. Who won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans? Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry defeated Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first playoff hole. McIlroy was competing in the event for the first time. He and Lowry shot 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer, who tied the tournament's foursomes record with a 63, at 25 under.
