Mid City Gras parade set to roll on March 9
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — This year's Mid City Gras parade is set for Sunday, March 9, after bad weather forced organizers to cancel its original date. The parade will start at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9. A release from organizers said the Mid City Gras board worked with krewes, bands and other participants to find the best new date. 'We're so grateful for everyone's flexibility. It's how we could ensure that everyone would still be able to enjoy this parade–even if it had to be after Mardi Gras,' Mid City Gras Board Member and Parade Coordinator Nathan Ryan said. 'We love having a parade that can be enjoyed by everyone in our diverse, creative community. We all came together and decided that, if the weather would not let us do Mardi Gras, we were going to have Marchi Gras.' The parade route goes down North Boulevard, starting at 19th Street, and ends at S. Foster Drive in front of Baton Rouge Community College. Mother of Zachary student allegedly forced to clean up own feces files police report
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The mother of a six-year-old girl who alleges her daughter was forced to clean up her own feces at Rollins Elementary School in Zachary has filed a report with police, her attorney confirmed. Jamisha Augustine is seeking legal action against the school and the Zachary Community School District, according to her attorney, Ron Haley. She is also pursuing charges against those responsible for what she said happened to her daughter. 'It is our opinion that the school did not follow the Louisiana Department of Education policy for cleaning up bodily fluids,' Haley said. Augustine claims the incident happened on Tuesday, Feb. 11, after her daughter was given milk despite the school being aware of her dairy allergy. The Zachary Community School District (ZCSD) launched an investigation into the claims and later issued a statement calling reports of the incident 'misinformation' that led to 'unfounded and inaccurate assumptions.' Augustine's attorney pushed back against the district's response, stating: 'We acknowledge that the school has accepted responsibility, but trying to change the narrative on who did what is irrelevant in this case.' He added, 'Someone had to be there to watch Jamisha's daughter, and whoever it was, that adult chose to do this to the child. You should not have to retrain someone to be human.' Haley also confirmed that some of the waste was sent home in a plastic bag with Augustine's daughter, calling the act 'insensitive, cruel, and humiliating.' Haley said he plans to contact the superintendent and school officials early next week. With the police report now filed, it is up to law enforcement to determine whether the case warrants criminal charges. Augustine removed her daughter from Rollins Elementary School on Monday, Feb. 17. ZCSD has not provided further comment beyond its most recent statement. The investigation remains ongoing. Gov. (Louisiana First News) — The Zachary Community School District (ZCSD) has issued a statement refuting claims made about an ongoing investigation into an incident at Rollins Elementary School, where a mother says her daughter was forced to clean up her own feces after being given milk despite having a dairy allergy. 'The Zachary Community School District is aware of misinformation circulating regarding recent concerns leading to unfounded and inaccurate assumptions about individuals within our School System,' the district's statement, released Sunday, Feb. 16, read. ZCSD urged the public to avoid 'speculation, accusations, and misstatements' and emphasized that the matter is still under investigation. While the district did not provide specific details, it did clarify that the Rollins Primary Elementary School teacher, principal, and substitute teacher were not involved in the incident. Additionally, the district stated that the regular teacher assigned to the class was absent on the day of the alleged incident. Louisiana law limits the information school districts can release about personnel matters and student privacy, according to ZCSD, which said it would not release any names related to the investigation. 'Our priority is to move forward together, fostering a positive and supportive environment,' the district said in its statement. The statement comes after the child's mother, Jamisha Augustine, and the Baton Rouge NAACP voiced their concerns publicly. Augustine said her daughter was humiliated after being forced to clean up her own waste and that school staff were aware of her dairy allergy. 'Everything about this situation has been wrong. It's not right. And nobody wants to take accountability,' Augustine said last week. She and NAACP representative Tia Fields attempted to file a police report with the Zachary Police Department but were told the matter remained within the school's jurisdiction. 'I have to stand up for her. She can't speak for herself. So I hope that someone does what is right,' she said last week. ZCSD has not provided further comment beyond its most recent statement.
