Guernsey event helps build children's literacy skills
Families in Guernsey have been invited to an event aimed at improving children's reading and writing event on Saturday, for three to five year olds, focuses on language and vocabulary. The Language for Literacy event will take place from 13:30 until 15:30 BST at Amherst Primary said families would be invited to take part in activities that built early literacy skills and helped parents learn simple ways to support their child.
'Really vital'
The event includes practitioners from early years settings, reception classes, the Guille-Alles Library and the States' Early Years said three school reception year groups and five pre-school settings had been taking part in the Language for Literacy Programme. Zara Betts, speech and language therapist at the States of Guernsey Early Years Team, said the programme helped lay the foundations needed for children to learn to read and write."They've focused around oral language and vocabulary, sharing a love of books and building their phonological awareness skills," she said.
