Road accidents affect economy, says CM Majhi
Bhubaneswar: Urging people to follow traffic rules, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said road accidents not only affect a family but also the nation's economy. Majhi made the statement while launching the 'Zero Accident Day' initiative, as a part of which efforts will be made to prevent road accidents. He said the programme will be held till June 28 in collaboration with IIT-Madras across the State, to ensure zero road accident casualties every day. 'If we can put a restriction on certain aspects, we can substantially bring down the number of deaths. Accidents are not just individual losses but collective losses. Therefore, I request everyone to strictly follow all traffic rules from leaving home till returning,' he said. Majhi said 75.2 per cent of people lose their lives in road accidents in India due to speed. 'The drivers are forgetting the golden rule of driving, which is speed thrills, but it also kills,' he said, noting that more than 5,500 people died in road accidents in the State in 2023. He said accidental deaths are also occurring due to driving on the wrong side and using mobile phones while driving. At the programme, the Chief Minister launched 55 projects worth Rs 575 crore. Among them were 11 automated vehicle testing systems in different districts, and the second phase of Driving Electronic Enforcement to Save Human Lives (DEESHA) project. DEESHA will now be operational on an additional 485 km of highways in the State. Under this, automated e-challans are issued to drivers who do not follow traffic rules. He also laid the foundation stone for the project's third phase, under which over 1,000 km of highways will be covered. Majhi also inaugurated the second registered vehicle scrapping centre in Jajpur district. He also flagged off 15 premium buses, which will connect Puri to Ayodhya, Tirupati, Ujjain, Hyderabad and Bhilai, Bhubaneswar to Visakhapatnam, Bhawanipatna to Hyderabad, and Raigarh to Hyderabad. He also inaugurated bus terminuses in Basudevpur and Dhamra in Bhadrak district, and Basta in Balasore district. Road safety ambassadors -- filmstar-turned-MLA Sidhant Mohapatra and sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik, were present in the programme.

Odisha CM launches 55 road safety projects worth Rs 576 crore
BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday launched 55 road safety programmes and projects worth Rs 575.77 crore covering all the districts of the state. Inaugurating the Zero Accident Day and Road Safety Week programme here, the chief minister said accidents not only affect individuals and families but also have a significant impact on the state's economy. He said road accident-related deaths have become a significant problem in India with 75.2 per cent of such fatalities caused by speeding. 'Drivers often forget the golden rule of driving: 'Speed thrills, but it also kills'. Wrong-side driving, drunk driving and using mobile phones while driving contribute to accident-related deaths. People should be cautious and avoid these mistakes to ensure safety of their lives as well as others,' he said. The Zero Accident Day campaign will continue till June 28. It is being conducted in collaboration with IIT-Madras. On this occasion, Majhi launched 11 automated driving testing systems (ADTS) in various districts with an investment of Rs 24 crore. He also launched the second phase of the Driving Electronic Enforcement to Save Human Lives (DISHA) project worth Rs 215 crore, which will cover 485 km of national and state highways.

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 4 (ANI): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi participated in the 'Zero Accident Day' campaign at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, launching multiple key initiatives under the Commerce and Transport Department worth Rs 575.77 crore, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and road safety across the state. During the event, CM Majhi inaugurated critical projects and laid the foundation stones for several new developments intended to reduce road accidents and improve transportation efficiency in Odisha. Speaking to mediapersons, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi said, 'Many schemes of the Commerce and Transport Department of the Odisha Government were launched today. We have also signed an MoU with IIT Chennai to reduce accidents by using new technology.' He highlighted the increasing number of road accidents, especially involving youth, and stressed the importance of stricter enforcement. 'Driving on the wrong side of the road, talking on mobile while driving and not following any rules, these are the reasons for accidents. A lot of youth are dying in will take action against the violators,' he added. Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Majhi visited Kalinga Studio in Bhubaneswar to review the progress of its renovation. Odisha's iconic Kalinga Studio is undergoing a massive transformation and is currently in its final phase. CM Mohan Charan Manjhi claims that around 90-95 per cent of the renovation work has been completed. He further highlighted the Cine Arts Association's demands for 'additional infrastructure' in the Kalinga film studio, which includes a police station, a village, a hospital, a temple and a court. As per the Odisha CM, the inauguration of the iconic Kalinga Studio is set to be held soon, which will be followed by a 'detailed planning' for film shooting in the next phase. As per the Industries Department of Odisha, Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) had submitted estimates for Rs 2.13 crores for the construction/renovation/modification of the developmental works. The renovation work include the repairing of Compound Wall, grading of Green Room (Make-up rooms), renovation of cottages, supply of water to different areas of the studio, repairing of Transformer, construction of pump house as well as overhead tank, repairing of indoor shooting floor, renovation and beautification of lawns and gardens, construction of slums / bastis, pindis and bhagabattungi etc. inside the studio premises for use by the film makers. Majhi launches ‘zero accident day' to enhance road safety
1 2 Bhubaneswar: In a significant move towards enhancing road safety, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday launched the 'Zero Accident Day' initiative. He also launched multiple road safety programmes and infrastructure developments worth around Rs 575.77 crore. Speaking at the event held at Lok Seva Bhavan here, Majhi emphasised that road accidents affect not just individuals but the entire economy. "About 75% of accident-related deaths in India are due to speeding," he stated, urging citizens to strictly adhere to road safety rules. "Accidents impact not just families or states, but the entire economy. It is not just an individual loss, but a collective one. Therefore, I urge everyone to strictly follow all road-related rules from the time you leave home until you return, ensuring a safe journey," he said. The event marked the inauguration of 11 automated driving testing systems (ADTS) across various districts, implemented at a cost of Rs 24 crore. The CM also launched the second phase of the Disha (Driving Electronic Enforcement to Save Human Lives) project, worth Rs 215 crore, which will cover 485 km of national and state highways. In a major boost to public transportation, 15 super premium buses, christened 'Shri Jagannath Express', were introduced at a cost of Rs 27.3 crore. These buses will connect various cities including Puri, Ayodhya, Tirupati, and Hyderabad. The state's first automated vehicle testing centre was unveiled in Cuttack, with plans to establish 20 more centres at an allocated budget of Rs 211 crore. The govt also inaugurated the Atal Bus Stand in three locations — Basudevpur, Dhamra and Basta. Commerce and transport minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena highlighted the govt's commitment to safe transport. "When we discuss Odisha's development, safe and robust transport is crucial," he said. The event saw participation from 'Zero Accident Day' brand ambassadors, including Digapahandi MLA Siddhanta Mahapatra and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik, who shared messages on road safety awareness. Five individuals — Abinash Panigrahi, Bishwaranjan Padhi, Panchanan Das, Srinivas Behera and Savita Rani Parida — were honoured for their efforts in transporting accident victims to hospitals. A CMO statement said the 'Zero Accident Day' initiative, developed in collaboration with IIT-Madras, will continue until June 28.
