‘Zero Day's Most Pleasant Twist? Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Plemons's Secret Romance

Netflix's new political thriller Zero Day is not necessarily what you might categorize as a 'sexy show,' but one scintillating subplot paired up two of Hollywood's most beloved actors. **Spoilers for , now streaming on Netflix** In Zero Day Episode 2, we learn that Roger Carlson (Jesse Plemons) and Alex Mullen (Lizzy Caplan) have more in common than shared father figure President George Mullen (Robert De Niro). The President's loyal body man not only dated the Commander in Chief's daughter, but Roger and Alex continue to shack up whenever the opportunity strikes! In fact, the moment where this romantic connection clicks into place comes in Zero Day Episode 2. President Mullen has tasked Roger with visiting Alex at her NYC apartment to try to come to some sort of political agreement about the Zero Day Commission. George mentions something about how Roger is one of the only people who can get through to his daughter. After Roger and Alex snipe back and forth about the stressful situation the whole country now finds themselves in, he bluntly asks, 'Are we doing this or not?' Then after a cooly witty back and forth, Alex walks into her bedroom, matter-of-factly taking off her shirt. Roger follows, undressing himself in turn. The casualness of the situation reflects how deep this relationship must go. 'I loved those scenes,' Lizzy Caplan told DECIDER. 'We knew from very early on that there was a rich history that we wanted to convey.' That history includes Alex's deceased brother, Nick (Jackson Eick). We learn over the course of the series that the major reason President Mullen opted not to seek reelection was because Nick perished from a heroin overdose. 'The three of them, we decided, were very, very close,' Caplan said. 'There are very few people that can actually understand what it's like to grow up in that family, in that White House, with that much of that many eyeballs on you all the time.' 'Especially when you're like Roger and Alex and Alex's brother, where they like to have a good time. They party a little too much. You know, they're sort of rebellious spirits.' Caplan was of course referring to the cocaine we know Alex does, the heroin Nick did, and the fact that Roger mentions being in Narcotics Anonymous. Caplan also explained that she and Plemons worked hard to ensure the Zero Day audience could intuit this rich history even if the script didn't point it out. 'We really didn't have that many scenes together and the scenes that we did have together, they're talking about this massive attack that is currently at the forefront of everybody's mind,' she said. 'So how do you integrate this history in these moments?' 'Jesse and I talked a lot about it. We wanted to refer back to very specific memories that they would have had together that we hoped that filled out some kind of tapestry between them, that it felt like they had known each other for a really long time.' Things like the couple's playful use of official language or Roger's recollections of the lake house obviously play into this, inviting the audience into their shared history. 'That shared experience is why she can open up to him and and rely on him.,' Caplan said. 'I think she probably has very few people outside of her family and outside of Roger who she could feel comfortable enough doing that with.'

De Niro makes his TV debut in Netflix show

After a six-decade-long career, Taxi Driver actor Robert De Niro is starring in his first television series - but he is not convinced he would do it again. "I don't know. It's a lot of work. It's like doing three features back to back," said the veteran American actor. De Niro portrays a former US president in Netflix's limited series Zero Day, which explores themes of truth and disinformation. De Niro's character leads the Zero Day Commission in the wake of a cyberattack that has inflicted chaos and claimed thousands of lives in the United States. Matthew Modine, who plays a politician, said the show's plot reflected how trust was being lost in institutions. "It's not the question of if a cyberattack will happen on the United States or in some other country around the world. It's when," he said. Preparation for the role was intense, according to De Niro. "It was a lot of work to learn all that and a lot of it was exposition, especially in certain parts," he said. "There wasn't much room for paraphrasing and stuff like that, or adlibbing But it was worth doing, you know?" The show was filmed during the last US presidential election campaign and creators Noah Oppenheim and Eric Newman said they were surprised how much art seemed to imitate life. "Every day we'd be on set, and whether it was election-related news or just some other event in the world, we would see things happening that when we had written about them in the show, we had thought were fictional, you know, fancies and pieces of speculation," said Oppenheim. "And then we watched as these things unfolded in the real world." Zero Day, which among others also stars Angela Bassett and Jesse Plemons, begins streaming on Netflix on Thursday. Reuters

Robert De Niro: Filming Netflix series like doing three features back to back

Robert De Niro has said filming for a new Netflix series about cyber warfare was 'like doing three features back to back'. The Oscar-winning actor, 81, was an executive producer on Zero Day, which sees him play former US president George Mullen, who is pulled out of retirement amid a cyber attack that has shut down the country's entire technology infrastructure. Speaking at a London screening, he said: 'It is like doing three features back to back.' He added: 'Jesse (Plemons) and I were talking about it, and he was saying, 'Television's a little different, you know?' 'And I kind of saw what he meant as time went on. 'It's just that there was a schedule, a very tight thing for me, I was in most of it (the film), and so I had to keep up with everything, even (something) as simple as knowing the lines. 'So, I likened it to being in the English Channel, swimming to England from France, looking behind me and not seeing France, looking ahead and not seeing England. 'I gotta keep going, otherwise I'm going to sink.' The six-episode series has been co-created by Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim and stars Breaking Bad actor Plemons as Roger Carlson, George Mullen's former aide, and Mean Girls actress Lizzy Caplan as Alexandra Mullen, a young congresswoman from New York. The political thriller begins with a 'zero-day event' which shuts down air traffic control, railroad crossings, subway signals, banking, communication, and other major systems. Angela Bassett is The President. Zero Day, a new conspiracy thriller series, also stars Robert DeNiro, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen & Connie Britton. Coming soon to Netflix. — Netflix (@netflix) December 19, 2023 An ominous message follows from an unknown and unseen enemy saying 'this will happen again' before US president Evelyn Mitchell, played by Angela Bassett, calls upon the former president, played by De Niro, to head the Zero Day Commission, charged with finding the designers of the attack. Asked if he had done any research for the film, De Niro said: 'Not in a sense, it was basically me reacting in the situation, I didn't feel that I had to. 'I had great people supporting me, Eric, Noah, (executive producer) Michael Schmidt, and technical people. 'We had the best advisers we could have had. And so it was there in the script, when I read each episode, I said, 'This is really good.'' Eric actress Gaby Hoffmann guest stars as Monica Kidder, a controversial Silicon Valley billionaire, with Agents Of Shield star Clark Gregg in a guest role as corporate raider, provocateur, and billionaire Robert Lyndon. The cast ensemble also comprises The White Lotus star Connie Britton, Room star Joan Allen, and Stranger Things actor Matthew Modine. The series was filmed in New York and Washingston DC. De Niro will also star in Netflix film The Whisper Man, a new adaptation of Alex North's bestselling novel of the same name which will begin production in the spring. Zero Day will be released to the streaming platform on February 20.
