Cause of death of Gene Hackman and wife's dog detailed after tragic discovery
The dog belonging to late Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa died of dehydration and starvation, a report has said. Hackman, 95, known for his roles in films including The French Connection, Unforgiven and The Conversation, was discovered at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on February 26. He was found dead alongside his wife Betsy, 65. The Mirror reports that authorities found two dogs at the property, but sadly one of the couple's beloved dogs, a kelpie mix named Zinna, was found dead. An investigation revealed that Hackman had died of heart failure, complicated by advanced Alzheimer's and hypertension. The actor was 'in very poor health' before he died, New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell said in a statement following an investigation into his passing. Medical examiners suggested that his wife died from rare rodent-borne illness hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. She had died a week before her husband. Their dog Zinna was found dead in a crate near Betsy's body, and the Santa Fe County animal control agency's report said there was 'partial mummification' of the dog. The dog's stomach only contained small amounts of hair and bile, leading animal control officials to confirm Zinna died of starvation and dehydration. Their beloved pet was a returned shelter dog, and was 'an incredible companion' to Betsy, said Joey Padilla, the owner of the Santa Fe Tails pet care facility. The couple's two other surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, are being cared for at the facility. Earlier this week, Santa Fe Fire Department Chief Brian Moya told USA Today that Bear and Nikita helped authorities find the bodies of their owners, after maintenance workers raised the alarm. He recalled the dogs were running up to first responders and barking, before running in a different direction. 'They realised (the dog) was trying to say, 'Hey, come over here! Come over here!'' he said. Gene, who won two Oscars, retired from Hollywood in the early 2000s, and preferred a more private life in Santa Fe with Betsy and their three dogs. Following news of the couple's death, a representative for Gene and Betsy's estate has tried to block the public release of autopsy and investigative reports related to their deaths, citing privacy concerns.

Gene Hackman's Surviving Dogs Helped First Responders Find Dead Body
Yara Sameh One of Gene Hackman's two surviving dogs had a pivotal role in the discovery of his body, first responders have revealed. The Oscar-winning actor, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe home last month, along with one of their dogs, Zinna. The couple's two other dogs, Bear and Nikkita, however, were found alive, running about the property. Upon entering the home, paramedics and the fire department first discovered Arakawa's body lying on the bathroom floor, Fire Chief Brian Moya told USA Today. Zinna was found dead in a crate in a nearby closet, while a backdoor had been propped open, allowing the other two dogs to roam freely. For the next 30 minutes, first responders continued their search throughout the four-bedroom house, looking for other people. But they found nobody, Moya said. That is until they realized that one of the dogs, who they assumed was running and barking for play, actually wanted to show them something. 'They realized (the dog) was trying to say, 'Hey, come over here! Come over here!'' Moya said. The dog then led them to a mudroom at the far end of the house, next to the kitchen, where Hackman's body was found. The actor appeared to have fallen, with his cane and sunglasses found on the ground nearby. Moya said that Hackman's body shows signs of decomposition, including blackened hands. Arakawa, who died from hantavirus, also 'showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet,' according to a search warrant. She is believed to have died before Hackman, likely a week prior, chief medical examiner Heather Jarrell said at a press conference last week. Jarrell added that it's possible Hackman was unaware that Arakawa had died due to his advanced Alzheimer's. His cause of death was tied to heart disease, with Alzheimer's disease contributing. Before Zinna's death, the dog had undergone 'major surgery,' and Arakawa had been instructed by veterinary staff to keep the dog confined to a crate, the hospital's owner, Robert Gruda, told USA Today. '[Arakwa] was an excellent dog owner, excellent caretaker to those dogs. She really doted on them,' Gruda said, explaining that Arakawa was supposed to pick up food and medication for Zinna at the hospital. 'She was consistent, predictable,' he added. 'We knew something was wrong when she didn't pick up the food on time.' The two surviving dogs have since been taken to a local pet daycare facility.

Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa Case: Dog's Likely Cause of Death Revealed
Originally appeared on E! Online One week after Gene Hackman and 's causes of death were determined, necropsy results for their dog Zinna have been released. The Australian Kelpie mix, who was discovered dead in a closed crate near Arakawa's body at the couple's home, likely died from severe dehydration or starvation, according to a report from New Mexico Department of Agriculture obtained by NBC News. "The stomach was mostly empty except for very small amounts of hair and bile," a veterinary pathologist stated in the document. "The large intestine was mostly empty except for very small amounts of green, thick and pasty feces that was mostly hair." Though Zinna—one of Hackman and Arakawa's three dogs—displayed "severe postmortem decomposition with partial mummification," investigators found "no evidence of an infectious disease" or trauma that could have led to her death, per the report. According to the pathologist, "If the dog was in a confined space without access to food or water, the dog most likely died of dehydration/starvation." More from E! Online Gene Hackman Case: Actor's 3 Kids Left Out of His Will Dolly Parton Makes First Public Appearance Since Death of Husband Carl Dean Nikki Garcia Details Reuniting With Ex John Cena for First Time in 7 Years As for why Zinna was in a kennel? Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza previously shared that Arakawa had visited a local vet clinic to seek medical treatment for Zinna prior to her death. "We know from our investigation that on February 9, 2025, she picked up Zinna from Gruda Veterinary Hospital," he said at a March 7 press conference. "There was a procedure that was done with the dog, which may explain why the dog was in a crate at the residence." Zinna's necropsy report also confirmed that she had undergone surgery, with a pathologist noting that her spleen was absent and sutured incisions were found in her small intestine. However, due to the severe breakdown of tissues, the pathologist said the "reason for the surgery could not be determined." Arakawa, 65, died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness transmitted through rodent excrements, according to authorities. Her date of death has been established to be sometime around Feb. 11, the last time she was seen alive on surveillance footage. Hackman's cause of death was been determined to be hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer's as a significant contributing factor. Investigators believe the 95-year-old passed away around Feb. 18 due to the readings on his pacemaker. Given Hackman's "advanced state" of Alzheimer's, New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell said it was "quite possible that he was not aware" of his surroundings—including that Arakawa had died in their home or that Zinna was in locked in cage. Dehydration and Starvation Likely Cause of Death for Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's Dog: Report
New details have been released regarding the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa Hackman's dog Zinna. Santa Fe County animal control said dehydration and starvation likely led to the kelpie mix's death, the Associated Press reported Friday, March 14, citing the New Mexico agency. However, the canine's body had already shown signs of partial mummification, meaning the severe state could have obscured changes in organs. The outlet also noted that no evidence of infectious disease, trauma or poisoning was detected. Santa Fe County animal control also noted that Zinna's stomach was empty except for small amounts of hair and bile, per AP. Zinna, Hackman, 95, and Arakawa Hackman, 65, were discovered dead in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26. Related: What Happened to Gene Hackman and His Wife?
