Iraq pushes for renewables with UAE energy deal
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraq's Electricity Minister Ziyad Fadel held talks with UAE-based Masdar to fast-track a 1,000-megawatt solar power project in Maysan, Dhi Qar, and Al-Anbar provinces. According to a statement by the Ministry of Electricity, Fadel held a virtual meeting with Masdar representatives to discuss finalizing the power purchase agreement and resolving obstacles. Iraq is ramping up efforts to transition toward renewable energy to ease chronic power shortages and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. With abundant sunlight and over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, the country holds strong potential for solar power. The government has set a target of generating 12 GW of renewable energy by 2030—mainly from solar—and has signed key agreements with international firms, including UAE-based Masdar.

Iraq signs energy boost with German firm
Shafaq News/ Iraq signed a new energy cooperation agreement and two long-term maintenance contracts with Germany's Siemens Energy on Thursday, aiming to expand power generation and modernize the country's electricity infrastructure. The agreement, signed by Iraq's Ministry of Electricity and Siemens Energy in the presence of the German ambassador to Iraq, and the Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani marks the third phase of the strategic energy partnership between Iraq and Germany. It targets an additional 14,000 megawatts for the national grid and seeks to improve energy services across the country. The two maintenance contracts cover major power generation sites. One involves a long-term service deal for two units at the Dibis Gas Power Plant, with a combined capacity of 340 megawatts. The second is a five-year contract for the Al-Mussaib Thermal Power Plant, aimed at maintaining 750 megawatts, adding 150 megawatts, and enhancing safety and performance. Electricity Minister Ziyad Fadel revealed, 'The latest agreement would raise Iraq's projected total generation capacity to 38,000 megawatts, surpassing the current output of 28,000 megawatts,' adding that the new Siemens-built plants would rely on locally sourced fuel and use combined-cycle technology that allows electricity to be generated without additional fuel consumption. 'This is happening for the first time in Iraq's history,' Fadel said, citing the scale of the strategic agreements signed with Siemens and General Electric. For his part Al-Sudani announced in a statement that energy remains a government priority and called for further coordination between Siemens and the Ministry of Electricity.

Iraq accelerates solar power installation
Shafaq News/ Iraq accredited 16 new specialized companies to install residential solar power systems, bringing the total number of authorized firms to 24, Electricity Minister Ziyad Fadel announced on Monday. In a statement, Fadel noted the move is part of the government's broader efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce pressure on the national power grid, adding that expanding the pool of qualified companies will accelerate project implementation and meet growing public demand, particularly under the Central Bank's (CBI) soft loan initiative. 'This initiative allows citizens to install solar power systems in their homes through low-interest loans provided by the CBI,' the minister pointed out, indicating that 'it supports the shift toward clean energy, which will improve environmental conditions and reduce pollution levels.' Earlier, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani instructed provincial governors to expedite the allocation of land for solar energy projects and to identify investment priorities and interested companies. The Iraqi Cabinet also approved a series of decisions aimed at strengthening the country's electricity production, including advancing renewable energy efforts across the nation.
