To the youth: We want to hear your voice!
To the youth: We want to hear your voice! In the words of the great Mahatma Gandhi, 'Be the change you want to see in the world'. The future of South Africa belongs to the youth, and their voices matter – now more than ever. ALSO READ: What advice would you give the 16-year-old you? While all teenagers and young adults are inheriting the term 'born free', signifying living a life without limitations, there are still numerous factors plaguing society. With parents, friends and family claiming to understand their struggles, it could force youngsters to silence their thoughts. Committed to empowering the next generation by listening to their voices, the Zululand Observer is launching the 'Voices of Tomorrow' campaign for individuals aged between 13 and 25. This initiative will illuminate the hopes, ideas and dreams of the next generation, and is driven by three burning questions: 1. What matters most to you? 2. What would you change if you could? 3. What kind of South Africa do you hope to live in? Your answers will help celebrate the perspectives of the country's youth while reflecting diversity and inspiring optimism. Be part of the Voices of Tomorrow campaign by emailing zulobs@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 7842695. All messages must include your name, age, school, area, and a photo/selfie for the article. What advice would you give the 16-year-old you?
What advice would you give the 16-year-old you? With age comes experience and, most importantly, wisdom. As we grow older, we tend to reflect on what the younger versions of ourselves would think of where we ended up – and what we endured along the way. In light of Youth Month in June, the Zululand Observer wants to hear your stories as part of its 'Dear 16-year-old me' feature. This is an opportunity for the seasoned generation to share their pearls of wisdom; from their dreams to the lessons they learnt the hard way, or a word of encouragement for today's youth. Criteria: • Your letter must start with 'Dear 16-year-old me…' • Must include your first name, age, and area • Send us a photo of your youthful self (optional) Send your letters to zulobs@ or WhatsApp 060 7842695 Don't have the ZO app? How to live with vervet monkeys – tips and insights at talk
How to live with vervet monkeys – tips and insights at talk Troubling scenes of animal cruelty, with monkeys being shot dead or maimed are a weekly occurrence in Richards Bay. To address this, guest speaker Silke von Eynern will give a talk on vervet monkey behaviour and solutions for co-existence on Wednesday, 28 May at 6pm at 44B Pelserplaat, Meerensee. ALSO READ: WATCH: Outcry after vervet monkey shot in head with pellet gun Silke is from Bambelela Wildlife Care NPC and Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation Centre, which she has run for 22 years. The Zululand Observer recently reported on the outcry after a baby vervet monkey was shot in the head with a pellet gun. Dr Jurgen Otto and wife Miriam were caring for the creature nicknamed Skollie before it sadly died two days after the shooting. The incident sparked outrage online, with many taking to Arboretum Veterinary Clinic's Facebook page to condemn the act of cruelty. 'Pellet guns should be banned. People think they are shooting monkeys and there's no suffering, but they are under a false illusion. It is terribly cruel and wicked!' said Angie Inman. 'No animal should live their lives in fear or torment at the hands of mankind,' said Debra Crochetiere. 'Unfortunately, this is what mankind is becoming – people with pellet guns who shoot and poison poor helpless wildlife,' echoed Jolene MacGregor Davey. Silke's talk will explain that there are better ways of co-existing with vervet monkeys. While the talk is free of charge, donations are welcomed to cover the cost of Silke's travel to Richards Bay. Attendees must bring a camp chair. Don't have the ZO app? Download it to your Android or Apple device here: HAVE YOUR SAY Like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter.
