Manchester Marathon: Temperatures soar as record number complete 26.2 mile course
It was an unseasonably warm day in the North West on Sunday as 36,000 people contributed to the largest day of marathon running in UK history Record numbers battled the heat as 90,000 people took to the streets in the largest day of marathon running in UK history on Sunday. The adidas Manchester Marathon saw 36,000 participants take on the flat and fast course in the North West with its new-look finish line, while in the capital, 54,000 pounded the roads in unseasonably warm conditions. The hot weather did prove a hit with spectators, as more than 140,000 people soaked up the Manchester sun to cheer on those brave enough to take on the 26.2 mile challenge. Of the elite runners, Josh Griffiths was first home in a staggering time of 02:16:56, while Tessa McCormick clocked a standout time of 02:34:53 to win the women's race. Second place was claimed by Olivia Tsim, just seven months after having a baby. One of those to cross the impressive new-look finish line on Oxford Road, was Kelsey Sheridan, 28, who overcame being wheelchair-bound due to CFS/ME, to take part alongside her assistance dog, Hamble. Heroic Harry Newton, 87, holds the title of being the event's oldest participant this year which saw more than £4million raised for hundreds of worthy causes, with The Alzheimer's Society, The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and The Christie Charity the official charity partners. I was among the thousands of runners in the mass event, finishing in a more modest time of 02:59:24, taking two seconds off my personal best set in London 12 months ago. The pancake flat course with minimal elevation proved perfect for PB chasers, despite the soaring temperature, as the lively Mancunian crowd lined the streets to roar words of encouragement. After starting outside the iconic Old Trafford football stadium, the route made its way out of town towards Stretford and Altrincham before participants returned through Sale towards the finish. As well as those who turned out, another 110,000 people watched from afar via the marathon's live stream to get a glimpse of their loved ones crossing the line. More than 50 per cent of the participants were taking on their first-ever marathon, showing the growing popularity of the event. Andrew Smith, CEO of adidas Manchester Marathon organisers, A.S.O. UK, said: 'It has been nothing short of spectacular. Manchester has shown once again why it's one of the best cities to take on a marathon – welcoming, passionate and full of heart. "To see 36,000 people cross the finish line, many for the very first time, on the UK's biggest-ever day of marathon running, is incredibly special. "We're proud to celebrate this moment with the whole community – participants, volunteers, charities and supporters – who made this event so successful".

'I had to learn how to walk again - now I'm running a marathon'
Kelsey Sheridan is getting ready for her first ever marathon event after she lost mobility and had to learn to walk again A 28-year-old software engineer who had to learn to walk again after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome is lacing up for her first marathon event. Kelsey Sheridan, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, is one of 36,000 participants taking part in the adidas Manchester Marathon 2025 on Sunday (April 27). She will be joined by her assistance dog, Hamble, for around 10km of the race. Kelsey, who is aiming for a sub-five-hour finish time, chose to run the adidas Manchester Marathon to mark a significant milestone in her recovery journey. "I first became unwell in the summer of 2016, during my first year of university. By the time I returned to my second-year studies after the holidays, I was in a wheelchair, as I'd been diagnosed with CFS/ME," she explained. "Before diagnosis, I struggled with varying symptoms. When I was younger, I could never sleep enough or wake up for school. This continued until my 20s. I struggled with exhaustion but originally these symptoms were thought to be caused by depression." Kelsey went on to graduate in 2018, but she was unable to work or leave the house without her assistance dog, Hamble. According to the NHS, symptoms of myalgic encephalomyelitis, often known as chronic fatigue syndrome, include sleep problems, feeling extremely tired all the time, problems with thinking, concentration and memory, and symptoms getting worse after physical or mental activity. The cause is unknown, and there is currently no cure. However, treatments may help manage the condition and relieve symptoms. There's no specific test for chronic fatigue syndrome, meaning it's diagnosed based on symptoms and by ruling out other conditions. Kelsey said: "When Hamble and I were first partnered by charity Canine Partners in 2019, I was a full-time wheelchair user who was mainly housebound. I was constantly overdoing it just to survive and was unable to recover and increase my capabilities safely. "Hamble is trained to support those with mobility issues and for me this was taking shoes, socks and clothing off. Fetching items, emptying the washing machine, passing me anything I ask for and fetching items like shoes or the TV remote. "With Hamble's help, I was able to slowly rebuild my strength and mobility. It was a tough period to say the least, but I'm so grateful to say that in November 2023, I was finally able to put down my crutches and walk freely again." In June 2024, Kelsey went for her first run since losing her mobility, and she soon set her sights on her next challenge. "I chose to run the adidas Manchester Marathon to mark a significant milestone in my recovery journey. Having full mobility is something I really took for granted before I lost my ability to walk, and it's something that I make a conscious effort to celebrate – even on the bad days," the 28-year-old explained. She's also set her sights on a time goal. "The adidas Manchester Marathon is my local event, in the city where I lost and ultimately regained my mobility. It's my first marathon, so I'd absolutely love to achieve a sub-five-hour finish time if possible." Kelsey was keen to acknowledge that chronic fatigue syndrome is not the same for everyone. "The truth is, medications and slow rehab may work for some, but not others," she said. "My advice to anyone who's lost their mobility due to health reasons would be to just keep going and think positively but allow yourself the bad days. We never know what the future might bring, so focus on the present and enjoy every moment!"

New finish line for Manchester Marathon 2025 announced
The Manchester Marathon will have a new finish line close to the city centre. The major run sponsored by adidas has announced the news on social media with a dramatic video taken by helicopter revealing the news. In previous years, the start and finish areas were near Old Trafford, with the route travelling through the city centre. This year however, runners will be completing the course at The University of Manchester on Oxford Road. In what is expected to be the largest edition of the run, 36,000 people will be lining up for the adidas Manchester Marathon on Sunday 27th April. The rest of the course will remain the same with stops to popular locations that have helped define the fourth largest marathon in Europe. Planning around the new finish has taken over two years according to organisers with feedback taken from participants. The key objective of the change was to improve the experience for finishers with expanded transport links and recovery options as well as a close proximity to bars, shops and restaurants for people to celebrate with family and friends. Places to participate in the event have been gradually released since April, with most recent allocations going in just a few hours. The final 10% of places for 2025 will be released today (October 16) and are expected to be just as popular. Andrew Smith, adidas Manchester Marathon CEO said: 'We've been planning this one for a long time, so it's a great pleasure to confirm the addition of a truly elite level finish to our event. "We've listened to the feedback from our participants and local community, as they are at the heart of everything we do. This switch combines what already makes the adidas Manchester Marathon special, with the same epic start under Trafford Arch but with significant improvements to the post-finish experience for our heroes and their supporters. 'Taking place at the same time as London, we know the eyes of the world will be on us, so cannot wait to further showcase everything Greater Manchester and the iconic city centre has to offer. Best of luck to everyone starting out on their marathon journey and see you in April!'. Further information about the new finish line and 2025 course is available on the official adidas Manchester Marathon website including a FAQ section for participants who might have queries.
