Indian selectors undecided about Test captaincy after Gill, Pant talks: Report
According to a report from Sky Sports, the Indian selectors are still undecided on who should be named the new Indian Test team captain after holding informal talks with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier in May, leaving the captaincy spot open ahead of the upcoming England tour, which will begin on June 20. advertisementIndia is expected to announce the new Test captain and the squad for the series this week, with everyone eager to know who will be appointed as the successor to Rohit. Earlier, it was reported that Gill and Pant were the front-runners for the job after Jasprit Bumrah decided to rule himself out of the race for the position. Bumrah said he couldn't guarantee playing all the five Tests in England. While Gill and Pant have been sounded out, the selection committee remains divided on both men. According to the report from Sky Sports, one of the selectors has reservations about giving Gill the captaincy as he is yet to nail down a spot in the Test team. It was suggested that being the vice-captain would serve the 25-year-old better at the moment. Rohit's original plan for retirementadvertisementA source also told Sky Sports about the initial plan for Rohit's retirement. It is believed that the 38-year-old wanted to be part of the squad for the tour and aimed to retire mid-series, much like how MS Dhoni did back in 2014 and handed over the reins to Virat Kohli. However, the selectors wanted consistency in terms of captaincy for the England tour and informed Rohit that he can be a part of the squad but won't be the captain. This prompted the 38-year-old to retire from the longest format of the game with immediate effect. Apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli also decided to retire from Tests ahead of the England tour, which will begin with the Headingley Test on June 20. Must Watch
