Kenya: Ministry of Health and Roche Partner to Cut Breast Cancer Treatment Costs by Two-Thirds
Breast cancer patients in Kenya are set to benefit from a major cost reduction in treatment, with sessions expected to drop from KES 120,000 to KES 40,000 following a landmark partnership between the Ministry of Health and Roche East Africa. Presiding over the event, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale officially launched the collaboration between the Ministry—through the Social Health Authority (SHA)—and Roche East Africa. This partnership aims to strengthen financial protection for patients battling cancer, one of Kenya's leading non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in line with the country's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks a bold step toward improving access to affordable, quality cancer care, particularly for breast cancer patients. Under the agreement, the cost per treatment session is capped at KES 40,000, with no co-payment required from patients. The partnership will be rolled out across all SHA-contracted facilities—including public, faith-based, and private hospitals—ensuring equitable access to care. Key components of the collaboration include: Enhanced access to essential cancer medicines and diagnostics Capacity-building and training for healthcare workers in breast and cervical cancer management Expanded screening and early detection efforts to support timely intervention and better health outcomes In his remarks, Hon. Duale reiterated the Ministry's commitment to transforming Kenya's health system, highlighting ongoing reforms such as the rollout of digital health tools to combat counterfeit medicines and unqualified practitioners. 'This partnership is not only about reducing treatment costs; it's about saving lives, promoting equity, and reinforcing the integrity of our healthcare system,' said the Cabinet Secretary. The event was attended by a high-level delegation led by Roche East Africa General Manager Ms. Jacqueline Wambua. Also present were Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni, SHA Chairperson Dr. Abdi Mohamed, Acting SHA CEO Mr. Robert Ingasira, Pharmacy and Poisons Board CEO Dr. Fred Siyoi, and KMPDC CEO Dr. David Kariuki. Lane Tech High School senior Divine Osuji steals spotlight at Chicago Public Schools science fair
For decades, some of the city's brightest students have shown their very best at the Chicago Public Schools science fair, but a Lane Tech senior stole the spotlight this year. Divine Favour Osuji, who just goes by Divine, doesn't just love science, he lives it, and he also lives to help people in need. The young people participating at the 75th annual Chicago Public Schools Science Fair and Exhibition at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry are exploring just about anything you can think of, from clean eating to sensor fusion, and more. But Divine's project is personal. "Growing up, I saw my grandparents suffer with a lot of different health complications," he said. "We were spending all this money on these health care devices, yet it was also putting a horrible economic dent in our pockets. I just wanted to ensure other families out there don't need to go through that same emotional suffering." So Divine decided to find a way people could monitor their health without breaking the bank. "My focus was on measuring three primary health vitals; which were heart rate, temperature, and blood oxygen levels," he explained. "The whole point was to try to get accurate health measuring with vitals, also keeping the cost as small as possible." This wasn't Divine's first rodeo. For other science fairs, he's created a prosthetic hand connected to a webcam. "It's sort of like shadowboxing, in a sense, where whatever movement you made in front of that camera, the prosthetic would mimic that movement," he said. He also developed a cost-effective way to remove garbage from a populated area back in his native Nigeria. All of his projects center on his basic belief that "anyone should be able to get adequate health care services, and there shouldn't be a price tag on that." Lane Tech chemistry teacher Lucy Young heads the Alpha-STEM and science departments, and says his determination is amazing. "Divine is one of those special kids," he said. "Divine has very creative energy to him. He sees a problem in the world, and he wants to try to fix it." Divine said his parents are "driving factors" for him, and his grandfather urged him to think big, even as a little boy. "We'd have a lot of intellectual debates, even though I was only 5 years old," he said. Intellectual curiosity is what brought Divine and other budding scientists together at the fair. It means the world to Carrie Kaestner, a teacher at Von Steuben Metro Science Center, who helps put it all together. "Their thoughtfulness, their professionalism, it just gives me hope for the future" she said. "These are our future voters, and they're going out, and they're going to be creating all this stuff and making the world a better place." That's definitely Divine's plan. CBS News Chicago asked what he thinks his "super power" is. "The ability, I guess, to acknowledge when I'm wrong because then it also gives me time to improve," he said. "I'm not incredibly arrogant. I still have a lot to learn." Divine plans to major in biomedical engineering in college. Next year he'll be a science fair alum, following in the footsteps of others who went on to become engineers, doctors an teachers, many of whom CPS says return to the science fair as judges. Earlier this year, Divine was named 2025 national STEM champion for developing that cost-effective prosthetic hand. Do you know someone a person or place that brings you joy? We want to share your story. Send us your "Eye on Chicago" ideas using the form below (or clicking here):

I'm a mom with type 1 diabetes. An insulin price cap would change my life.
(Photo Illustration by) I'm 36 years old. I have Type 1 diabetes. I'm raising a toddler. And I am so tired. Every day is a balancing act between staying alive and staying afloat. I'm constantly monitoring my blood sugar, taking insulin, scheduling appointments, and praying I don't hit a snag, because any delay or disruption in my care could land me in the ER or worse. And even when I do everything right, I'm drowning. Insulin isn't some luxury item. Neither are the supplies that keep me stable. But the price tags make it feel like I'm being punished for needing them. I shell out hundreds of dollars a month just to keep my body functioning—and there's zero margin for error. No extra wiggle room. No safety net. Just the relentless pressure to survive another day. That level of constant stress—that's my baseline now. And it's catching up with me. It's a pretty simple story. Insulin prices have gone up in my lifetime. That burden has dictated the course of my entire adult life. It's stopped me from switching jobs, going back to school, or building financial stability. Every other developed country on Earth offers insulin at little to no cost. And yet, people die in this country every year from rationing insulin. That's not just a tragedy—it's a human rights violation. Keeping life-saving medicine behind a paywall while it's free everywhere else is indefensible. The Biden Administration capped insulin prices for seniors on Medicare through the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. While this is still in place, the insulin cap does not cover millions of individuals. This action demonstrates that it is possible to put people above profits. With the current Trump Administration and a Republican controlled House and Senate, it is not clear if the insulin cap in the Inflation Reduction Act will remain. It is incumbent upon states to address this issue so residents are not forced to ration medication or simply go without this life-saving drug. Here in Nevada, something good is happening—finally. Democratic Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager introduced a bill in the Legislature to cap insulin prices for individuals on private insurance at the state level. And that gives me hope again. It tells me that someone is listening and understands that this isn't about handouts—it's about survival. About moms like me getting a chance to live long enough to raise our kids. I don't want Hudson to grow up without his mom because insulin became too expensive. I don't want to become another headline about a woman who died young because the system made her choose between her health and her bills. We need insulin caps. We need full coverage for diabetes care—supplies, appointments, everything. We need a healthcare system that doesn't crush people who are doing everything right but still can't afford to survive. I'm not asking for luxury. I'm asking to stay alive. Yeager's bill gives me hope that Nevada might lead the way where the federal government has failed. That maybe, just maybe, moms like me won't have to carry this weight alone anymore.
