The stripped-down $20,000 truck that makes EVs affordable
The first thing people have heard about the new truck from Slate Auto is that it's cheap — only $20,000 after tax breaks.
The second thing is that it's shockingly basic: no paint job, no digital screen, no speakers, not even power windows, until you pay for upgrades.
And the third thing — a distant third — is that it's electric.

The combination is a hit: More than 100,000 people have placed pre-orders for the vehicle, which debuted last month as the Slate and has been promised for delivery by next year. That level of interest suggests that the Slate could aid the electric vehicle's transition from an expensive eco-vehicle to a normal truck for normal dudes.
