Jose Mourinho reacts to Tottenham beating Man Utd in Europa League final

Jose Mourinho admits the Europa League final will have 'huge impact' on both champions Tottenham and runners-up Manchester United. Ange Postecoglou's Spurs beat Ruben Amorim's United 1-0 in an all-English Europa League final last week. The result saw Tottenham list a major trophy for the first time in 17 years and sent Spurs back into the Champions League despite their embarrassing form in the Premier League. For Manchester United, the defeat capped off a miserable season in which they finished just 15th in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag and his replacement Amorim. Asked about the impact on the result for both clubs, Mourinho told Sky Sports: 'The impact is obvious. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'Tottenham play Champions League and of course for Mr Levy, the millions the Champions League gives, for him it's the best news. 'For the fans, the players and Ange, it's a title. Yes the game was not amazing but they made history for Tottenham because Tottenham didn't have a trophy for so many years. 'From what I read – just what I read – the impact on United of course is huge in the sense of for how many years has United are not involved in any European competition. 'But at the same time it looks like they are supporting Ruben, they are giving him time and conditions to go forward. 'I read some quotes from him saying he's happy he came and already had these six months. When I went to Porto the same thing happened. More Trending UK 11 hours ago By Luke Alsford 'I went in January and we had a difficult six months, we struggled even to qualify for UEFA Cup. And then we saw what happened. 'I was divided because on one side I love United and I have a fantastic relationship with Ruben. 'But on the other side I saw Sonny crying with the cup… also for Tottenham fans it was a special feeling.' Spurs celebrate European title - and their once ridiculed boss came with a defiant message

Speaking to supporters and soaking up the scene around the Tottenham High Road told you everything about what it means to end a trophy drought. What it means to a club, a community and a fan base . More than 100,00 fans turned out on a Friday afternoon to welcome back a team with the Europa League trophy. For some clubs, 17 years might not seem a long time without a title. But Tottenham have endured so much frustration and ridicule - competing for much of the last decade in the upper reaches of the Premier League without any prize to show for it. And their last four cup finals have been lost. A punch line to savour No wonder pundits doubted whether head coach Ange Postecoglou could continue his record of always winning a trophy by the second season at his clubs. Now was the moment, at the end of the parade in front of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to savour the success he promised to deliver. "I told them, and they laughed," he told the crowd. "I told them, and they didn't believe." Then came the punch line. "I'll leave you with this," the Australian-Greek former Celtic manager said. "All the best television series, season three is better than season two." Domestic woes forgotten - for now Whether he will be back for season three has been the subplot throughout the second half of the season. What was more surprising about beating Manchester United in the all-English final - a fourth win over the once-mighty fallen giants of the season - was reaching the final at all. Because the Europa League has been won during Tottenham's worst domestic campaign in almost five decades. It's a Premier League season that will end on Sunday, just above the relegation zone. But when there's a trophy to parade, on buses through the streets around the stadium, all the turbulence vanishes. At least for now. Read more from Sky News: 'Champions again' For so many fans, there was disbelief mixed with delirium that the trophy cabinet would have a new addition, rather than questioning who would be in the team coaching them next season. There had been no European success since 1984, no domestic cup since 2008, until Brennan Johnson's scrappy goal sealed silverware in the final in Bilbao. "Champions again," they chanted on a day when blue confetti filled the air and a trophy had its homecoming to north London.

Spurs clinch Europa League after scrappy 1-0 affair with United

dpa Berlin Brennan Johnson's goal helped Tottenham Hotspur end their trophy drought with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the all-English Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday. The victory for Spurs means a spot in next season's Champions League alongside five other English teams despite languishing down in 17th in the Premier League - one place above the drop zone. United, 16th domestically, will finish their worst season in decades without a trophy nor European qualification having otherwise gone unbeaten in Europe's secondary club competition this campaign. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou made a point this term of saying he always won trophies in his second seasons in his native Australia, in Japan and in Scotland. And a 17-year wait for a major trophy for Spurs, following an English League Cup triumph in 2008, ended when a combination of Johnson and United defender Luke Shaw deflected in Pape Sarr's cross at the near post on 42 minutes. 'It is an unbelievable feeling,' Spurs defender Micky van de Ven told RTL. 'The fans deserve this for their support week after week. The fans are this club. We defended so well.' Postecoglou sprang a surprise before kick-off when he left captain Son Heung Min initially on the bench and Richarlison was preferred on the left for Spurs, who won this trophy in 1972 and 1984. United, who had Leny Yoro fit again but Manuel Ugarte only as a substitute as Mason Mount started, were back in the Basque Country just weeks after the semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao. Lacked quality Spurs made the better start amid a feverish atmosphere inside San Mames, which along with its predecessor stadium is known as being the most 'English' of Spanish grounds. United, the 2017 Europa League champions who also lost the 2021 final, improved and Amad Diallo fired just wide on 16 minutes. The rest of the first half was full of niggly fouls and lacked quality until Wales forward Johnson - Spurs' top scorer in all competitions this term with 18 - bundled in the opener. The second half was also scrappy and Spurs held on, with Rasmus Højlund going close for United when his header was acrobatically cleared off the line by Van de Ven. Guglielmo Vicario also made a superb save at the death from Shaw. United coach Ruben Amorim arrived in November after replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag and masterminded a string of exciting Europa League wins - topped by a remarkable comeback in the quarter-final against Lyon.
