With UN support: +300 displaced Iraqi families return to Sinjar

Shafaq News/ Over 300 displaced Iraqi families from Sinjar have left the displacement camps and returned to their homes in Nineveh Province, the Duhok Department of Migration, Displacement, and Crisis Response reported on Tuesday. Speaking to Shafaq News Agency, department director Diyan Jaafar confirmed that 370 families left the Duhok camps over the past two days as part of the final group supported by the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). Over the past three years, nearly 2,800 families have returned to their towns and villages across Sinjar—including key locations such as Karzark, Tal Uzair, and Dugure—under the IOM-supported voluntary return program. However, Jaafar noted, the broader return process has been temporarily suspended following US President Donald Trump's recent decision to freeze humanitarian and financial assistance to the United Nations for three months. 'Local authorities are now awaiting the end of this pause to resume further return efforts,' he added. On August 3, 2014, ISIS attacked Sinjar, killing, injuring, and displacing thousands of Yazidis before Peshmerga forces reclaimed the area in 2015. Nearly 200,000 Yazidis remain in displacement camps in Duhok, with thousands still missing nearly a decade later.

Rwanga leads Ramadan aid: 800 food baskets for Halabja's families

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Iraqi Kurdistan's Halabja launched a campaign to distribute 800 food baskets to underprivileged families across the province in partnership with the humanitarian organization Rwanga. The provincial administration stated that the distribution process, coordinated with the Directorate of Migration, Displacement, and Crisis Response, spanned two days, reaching vulnerable families in Halabja City, Sirwan and Khurmal districts, and the Bayara and Bamo subdistricts. The aid was delivered under an organized plan to maximize the number of beneficiaries. 'The initiative aims to support low-income families during the holy month of Ramadan and ease financial burdens amid ongoing economic hardships in the region,' according to the administration. Halabja authorities praised the continued cooperation between government agencies and humanitarian organizations in implementing charitable projects, emphasizing that such initiatives reflect 'the values of solidarity and social compassion, especially during religious occasions that call for broad community support.' Like other areas in the Kurdistan Region, Halabja faces growing economic challenges, making humanitarian efforts and food aid essential to supporting those in need. Government bodies and charitable organizations continue to intensify relief efforts during Ramadan to assist struggling families. Earlier today, the Rwanga Organization launched a food aid campaign to support low-income families in Duhok province.

Duhok displacement camps receive heating oil

Shafaq News/ Authorities in Duhok have begun distributing heating oil to 15 displacement camps housing more than 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Directorate of Migration, Displacement, and Crisis Response announced on Monday. Directorate head, Diyan Jaafar, told Shafaq News that, in coordination with the Barzani Charity Foundation, the directorate formally requested Iraq's Ministry of Migration in Baghdad to secure fuel supplies for the IDPs. 'The distribution is being carried out in two phases, with each family receiving 100 liters of oil free of charge per round,' he said. Jaafar noted that the first phase has been completed, while the second is currently underway according to a set schedule to ensure all camps receive their allocated share. However, he warned of a significant decline in international aid, particularly during the winter months, due to the prolonged displacement crisis, which has reduced global attention to the humanitarian needs of IDPs. As Iraq experiences a severe cold snap, displaced families in Duhok are struggling with worsening living conditions. Many camp residents have called on authorities and aid organizations for additional support, warning that the distributed fuel is insufficient to heat the poorly insulated tents and caravans, which suffer from water leaks and freezing temperatures. Asia Slo, a displaced woman in Dawoodiya Camp, said the heating oil provided is insufficient for the extreme cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing. She urged the government for more fuel, highlighting poor insulation in caravans and rainwater leaks that worsen living conditions. Duhok province currently hosts 15 displacement camps sheltering 20,875 families, while an additional 35,000 families reside outside the camps in urban areas and surrounding districts.
