It's Your Call for May 26

Put it to a vote I read the editorial about dredging Lake Contrary and agree with it 100%. As a matter of fact, I think it would be fair to the Buchanan County residents to put something like that to a vote and let the whole county decide how they want to spend their tax dollars because I actually believe the $6 million is probably half of what it will cost to dredge it when it's over. Maybe they could have a property assessment to the owners of real estate in that area that are going to benefit the most. The right direction The more I hear Democrats whining about President Trump, the more I know we're on the right track and the country's going to get better. Stand up to him What Netanyahu is doing to the Palestinian people is a war crime. The world needs to stand up with this guy. What a hypocrite Josh Hawley is a hypocrite. He goes along with Trump for cutting FEMA, and then he says FEMA needs to step up after the St. Louis tornado. Take a chance All you anti-Trumpers on here should take a chance and watch FOX News for a day or two and see the truth. Take a chance and see what you think.

Sound Off: May 26, 2025

Sun Herald readers weigh in on local and national topics: Come live on E Wortham Road and you, too, can enjoy dump trucks driving back and forth all day long, six day a week. Some with their loud brakes. In the Sound of for 24 May an obvious Trump-hater stated that President Trump said '... Liz Cheney should be shot' which was blatantly untrue. With Tucker Carlson on October 31, 2024, then former President Donald Trump at the time, referred to her as a 'radical war hawk' and said, 'Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK? Let's see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.' He did not explicitly state that Liz Cheney should be shot, however his comments were misperceived by the anti-Trumpers as making such a threat. Here we go again. Donald Trump allowed some white South Africans into America, claiming genocide against them. He showed us photos of it in his oval office meeting with South African president, who disputed his claims. Now the truth is out. The photos he claimed showed genocide against white people were actually taken in Congo. What do we when we cannot trust anything our President says without fact checking first. The president lied about the South African killings? I just don't believe it. I mean, he's been so honest about everything else. In keeping with the trend of posting positive stories in Sound Off, I'd like to give a big 'THANK YOU' shout out to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport (MHG). I recently had surgery there which I would have previously had performed in New Orleans or Mobile. I decided to give MHG another chance. I could not be more pleased with the experience. The entire staff, physicians, nurses, dietitians, housekeeping staff, valet staff (yes, they do have free valet parking), administration, security, clergy, and everyone else, were exceptional. Special accolades to the 3rd-floor staff. It's good to know we have such a first-class hospital right here in south Mississippi. Keep up the excellent work and once again, thanks for saving me a trip (and possibly my life) with state-of-the-art health care. It makes me proud to claim MHG as my hospital of choice when I could have decided to go out of state. People cry 'Cut our taxes!' Then they cry 'Don't cut our government programs!' But how can government programs (medical research and help, military readiness, education, disaster support, charity, etc.) be supported without taxes? Taxes are the lifeblood of a healthy society. Do taxes need to be monitored for need, efficiency, and effectiveness? Yes! But remember: a tax cut often and sometimes necessarily produces a program cut. Be careful what you ask for. Why does the press bother attending White House briefings and asking Karoline Leavitt questions? They already know they're going to get nothing but the party line. Send your Sound Offs to soundoff@

Eliminating the Department of Education won't harm children

Done right, the department's elimination wouldn't harm our children. Some progressives who were present at its creation in 1979 Advertisement I glimpsed this forgotten history while covering the late representative Pat Schroeder, when the Coloradan made a 1990s swing through my New Hampshire newspaper's region. She surprised me by saying that, while fully supporting federal aid to local schools, she'd considered a centralized bureaucracy with say in how it was spent to be a mistake. Representative Advertisement Unsurprisingly, the rival to that teachers union, the National Federation of Teachers, opposed the department, as did, perhaps more surprisingly, the editorial board of 'No matter what anyone says, the Department of Education will not just write checks to local school boards,' Schroeder Rather, the legitimate concerns about the current plans for the department are two: First, the agencies onto which Trump The administration's school funding commitment hides in the will-he-or-won't-he miasma darkening so many Trump policies. Education Secretary Linda McMahon Advertisement Progressives should stress adequate funding, smartly spent, not reflexive support for a bureaucracy and department that some of their ideological forebears opposed. Certainly, the savings from eliminating DOE jobs, like other elements in the so-called Department of Government Efficiency's phantom that big a waste is not a hill anti-Trumpers should die on. If education advocates work to ensure such necessary funding, Schroeder, Chisholm, et al. will rest easy in their graves.

Trump ally Laura Loomer accuses Jeff Bezos' Amazon of selling ‘assassination gear' amid 8647 controversy

Laura Loomer accused Amazon of selling 'assassination gear' and shared a series of screenshots which supposedly showed caps with the number '8647' on them being sold on Jeff Bezos' e-commerce platform. Loomer is an ally of US President Donald Trump and a MAGA (Make America Great Again) influencer. 'Wow. They are selling ASSASSINATION GEAR on Amazon!' Loomer wrote and tagged Jeff Bezos. It started with a picture posted by former FBI Director James Comey. The photo he shared on Instagram showed a shell formation that apparently read '8647'. The visual quickly went viral, with many accusing it of being a veiled threat to 'eliminate' US President Donald Trump. Soon after the backlash, Comey deleted the photo and issued a statement addressing the incident. 'I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn't realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down,' he said. 86 is an American slang term that reportedly means 'get rid of' or 'remove'. Social media users speculated that 47 referred to the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump. They claimed that together the number 8647 implied 'removal of Trump". An individual tagged FBI Director Kash Patel and asked, 'What are you gonna do about this?' Another added, 'I wonder how many anti-Trumpers will change their bank codes and gym lockers to that number!' A third posted, 'Amazon and @JeffBezos need to be charged, brought to trial, and brought to justice — with huge fines and levies.' A fourth remarked, '@JeffBezos Do you really think this is appropriate? This makes me want to cancel my Prime as I'm sure many other patriots do. Absolutely disgusting.' A fifth wrote, 'I searched Amazon and found several items with this message.'

Post From MAGA Supporter Whose Child's Father Got Deported

As part of President Donald Trump's campaign promise to crack down on immigration, his administration says there have been 139,000 deportations since Trump took office. Well, not all of these deportations have been of criminals as was largely perceived on the campaign trail. Recently, someone claiming they voted for Trump shared that, due to his immigration policies, the father of their child had purportedly been "extradited." The Facebook post circulated widely on Reddit, gaining thousands of views and comments from anti-Trumpers and MAGA supporters alike. Here's what the full post says: "I voted for Trump and it cost me immensely. 16 years ago I met a boy. We were in high school. He became my first love, my first boyfriend and the father of my first child. He was many things but at the top of the list was a superb father. That man would go to the ends of the earth to look for the last pencil if that's what I told him our daughter needed." "Despite being here before he could even walk. Despite not having any criminal record. Despite making multiple trips to DC (as an adult) to acquire the paperwork to be here the 'right way', papers his mother should have taken the responsibility to get for him when he was just a child. Despite hiring immigration lawyers. The father of my oldest child is being extradited." "My oldest child is loosing her father because of Trump's immigration policies. Do I feel like I made a mistake? Possibly. Ask me again when I'm not so emotional." "I didn't post this for sympathy. But yall need to know it's not just 'bad' people with a criminal record being deported. These people are Head of the household. The enemy wins by destroying the family unit with this policy." "The past few days as I've pleaded, begged, absolutely bawled my eyes out to the Lord to reveal to me the benefit in this, He told me one thing." "And here is where imma give y'all something to argue about. I don't believe this immigration policy is in the Will of the Lord. I don't believe in my heart that this is something Jesus would celebrate were He here." "But he was everything to me and my daughter. And even though him and I together have overcome generational and family traumas so our child didn't have to walk through them, the enemy has still won here. That's not something I'm ever going to celebrate. EVER." In response to the post, there was a wide array of opinions. One person expressed little sympathy, writing, "He ran on mass deportations and tariffs. That was his entire campaign. You're a chicken who voted for Colonel Sanders. Deal with- my sympathy belongs to those who didn't think it's OK if it happens to someone else." "Everything she's saying we already knew would happen from Trump term 1," this person agreed. "We knew he'd go after innocent, harmless people because that's what he did last time. She didn't give a fuck, she only cares now because it impacts her. What about all the other fathers who you probably just wrote off as 'illegals' before?" Others pointed out that the post was a small step in realizing that Trump is fallible. "She is, at the very least, admitting that Trump is failable and doesn't always go do the thing that God would want (which is the true thing that ought to happen). Now that's a very small step, and she may just end up compartmentalizing it. But it's honestly a refreshing take compared to the absolute blind praise Trump normally gets from conservatives." This person pointed out that the Democratic Party advocated for policies that would've helped her child's father stay in the country. "If only there was a party with candidates that wanted to provide a path to citizenship for people like her daughter's father... for people who have a next time, don't vote for the person or party who wants to deport your kid's father." Other MAGA supporters did express some sympathy in the original poster's comments, but questioned what the line was for deporting undocumented individuals: "I do not believe in breaking up families but at the same time, where do we draw the line?" Another MAGA supporter shared that they too were feeling "screwed" by their Trump vote. And finally, in response to the post, this person expressed how ashamed they were of Trump's actions. "I am changing my voter registration. I will never show as a republican again. I am ashamed," this person commented. Now, I need to know what your thoughts are. Let us know in the comments.
