Apple iOS 26: When it's being released, and how you can download it early
Apple officially unveiled its updated iOS 26 operating system in a keynote speech that went live on Wednesday, June 9. The new design comes with a new name that you may have noticed has skipped several numerical iterations from the current iOS 18 that iPhone users are using on their devices. Apple is set to rebrand its operating system name by following the last two digits of each upcoming year, and will do so across all of its platforms, including Apple TV, MacOS, WatchOS and iPadOS, according to a news release . Among the design improvements is the newly introduced 'Liquid Glass,' Apple's 'broadest design update ever,' according to the keynote speech . The 'universal design' will, for the first time, be available across all of Apple's platforms, and is set to provide a 'harmonious experience' as users move seamlessly within Apple's ecosystem. Liquid Glass will have the optical qualities and fluidity of glass, and will reflect light and dynamically react to the user's movement, according to Apple. The translucent redesign will appear across all Apple devices, including CarPlay, which will create a more intuitive experience for users. Apple Intelligence will also receive updates, with users now being able to translate texts and calls as they happen and perform screenshot searches in real time. For a complete rundown on all of the new features in Apple iOS 26, visit or watch the keynote speech . Apple has made it easier than ever to get your hands on the new iOS early through its Apple Beta Software Program. All you have to do is register as an Apple developer by signing in with your Apple account and accepting the Apple Developer Agreement to register for free. Once you've done so, you can access beta versions of new iOS releases by going to Settings > General > Software Updates, and toggling Beta Updates on your device. The iOS 26 Beta will then appear, giving you access to download an early preview of all of the new features and technologies within the new operating system. The current beta requires 9.23 GB of space on your phone, and it is recommended that you backup your device prior to the installation in the event of any bugs or crashes that may occur in the first iteration of the developer beta. A screenshot of the update page for Apple's new iOS26 Developer Beta. The iOS 26 Developer Beta has only been available for under 24 hours and, so far, reaction has been mixed. A first iteration typically has some bugs, but also provides a window for Apple to receive user feedback and correct all of the issues that may arise ahead of the public release. Here is what the public has been saying about their experience so far. 'iOS 26 Beta is very buggy. So glitchy, so slow, runs hot even after no use. The notification centre, control centre is bad in terms of performance and visuals, because you can see everything behind and there is not enough blur in background. Needs tons of polish,' said @badhanganesh on X. iOS 26 Beta is very buggy. So glitchy, so slow, runs hot even after no use. Apple event today: How to watch, what time, latest rumors on iOS 26, new design
Today's the day for Apple fans to (maybe) find out what's coming next for their phone, watch, tablet and desktop software. Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference runs for five days, but for most people, the June 9 keynote address is the part that matters. The annual software developer's conference traditionally provides the first look at the newest updates coming for Apple products from iPhones to Mac computers, and while this year is expected to be more low-key than 2024's AI extravaganza, some big changes may be revealed. Apple seems to be teasing at least one expected change. On June 2, Apple changed the tagline on its WWDC page from the previous "On the horizon" to read "Sleek peek," with a new glassy Apple logo. This could be a hint to the rumored massive design overhaul to bring Apple's translucent, glass-like visionOS design to all the rest of the Apple products. This would be the first big design overhaul since iOS 7. USA TODAY will provide live coverage of Monday's keynote, along with the latest updates on the company reveals. Here's what to know. The keynote for WWDC 2025 takes place at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, on June 9 at 1 p.m. ET and will be followed by a "Platforms State of the Union." The keynote is set to be streamed on Apple TV, the Apple YouTube page and at or just watch the video above. USA TODAY will also provide live coverage. While it's all still speculation until Apple CEO Tim Cook hits the stage, here are some of the announcements that are rumored to be coming: All operating system software is expected to jump from whatever number it's on now to 26 (iOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, etc) to start using the launch season year instead of sequential update numbers All the Apple devices will get a new glossy, translucent look with rounded navigation and apps to match the visionOS design AI-controlled battery management? More Apple Intelligence integration in Shortcuts, phone app, more iOS 26 to launch new pre-installed, centralized gaming app to replace Game Center iOS and iPadOS expected to get the Mac Preview app MacOS 26, the newest Mac update, is expected to be named Tahoe, in keeping with the habit of naming software updates after California locations WatchOS 26 is expected to see more AI integration, more outdoor tracking features. Will we get blood pressure monitoring? tvOS 26 to see more AI integration, new visual look Apple AirPods may get new Live Translate feature, other upgrades such as sleep detection This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: Apple WWDC 2025 event: How, where to watch Monday livestream, time
