ECSO: Knife-wielding man shot and killed during confrontation with deputies at Arby's
Escambia County Sheriff's deputies killed an armed assailant June 19 at a Pensacola-area Arby's after he allegedly "moved aggressively" toward three deputies while armed with a knife.
Deputies responded to the Arby's on U.S. Highway 98 around 3 p.m. after receiving reports a 37-year-old man wanted for multiple felonies that included domestic battery by strangulation, aggravated assault, burglary and grand theft had been spotted at the restaurant.
When deputies arrived at the Arby's, the man reportedly fled from the parking lot inside the restaurant.
"The suspect jumped the counter and struggled with a deputy before pushing the deputy to the ground," an ECSO release said. "He then grabbed a large knife and confronted three deputies who had also jumped the counter in pursuit."
The man then "ignored deputies' commands" to drop the knife and "moved aggressively towards the deputies" while wielding the knife. At that time, all three deputies fired, striking him several times.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the deputies were injured, and all three were placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, per department policy.
