Give prison officers the lethal weapons ‘they need', Jenrick says

Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has said prison officers dealing with violent inmates must get the lethal weapons 'they need' as he defended calls for specialist armed teams in jails. The Conservatives said secure armouries should be introduced at maximum security jails to be used as a last resort. They have also called for high-collar stab vests to be provided to frontline officers immediately, citing the threat from inmates after recent attacks on prison officers. Robert Jenrick commissioned counter-extremism expert and former prison governor Ian Acheson to carry out a rapid review into the violence (Yui Mok/PA) Mr Jenrick said there is a growing risk that a prison officer could be kidnapped or murdered in the line of duty without his proposed reforms. ADVERTISEMENT 'We have to stop pussy-footing around Islamist extremists and violent offenders in jails,' he said in a statement. 'Give them Tasers, give them stun grenades, give them baton rounds and give them access to lethal weapons,' he told the Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme on Sky News. 'Let's ensure the officers have what they need,' he added. 'The Chief Inspector of Prisons himself has said that he can see a situation where people like Islamist terrorists get access through drones to weapons, to explosives, hold prison officers hostage, even kill officers. 'This is going to happen unless the Government take action.' Mr Jenrick commissioned counter-extremism expert and former prison governor Ian Acheson to carry out a rapid review into the violence. Mr Acheson said: 'The threat to officer safety is now intolerable and must be met decisively by the Government. ADVERTISEMENT 'The balance inside too many of our prisons has shifted away from control by the state to mere containment and the price is soaring levels of staff assaults and wrecked rehabilitation.' It come after attacks by high-profile inmates. Manchester Arena plotter Hashem Abedi targeted prison staff with boiling oil and homemade weapons in a planned ambush last month. Southport killer Axel Rudakubana (Merseyside Police/PA) Southport killer Axel Rudakubana allegedly attacked a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh earlier this month by pouring boiling water over them. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered a snap review into whether stab vests should be used more routinely, and a trial that will give specialised officers dealing with serious incidents Tasers is due to be launched this summer. Officers already have access to batons and Pava spray, a synthetic form of pepper spray, in men's prisons in the public sector. ADVERTISEMENT Asked whether he could see that the public would want him to take responsibility for failing prisons as a former government minister, Mr Jenrick told the BBC's Sunday Morning With Laura Kuenssberg programme: 'We should have done more, but look, what Labour are doing now is making the problem worse, and they are reaching for the easy lever of letting prisoners out early.' More than 10,000 prisoners were released up to 70 days early by the Tory government, according to Ministry of Justice figures. Under the End of Custody Supervised Licence (ECSL) scheme, announced in October 2023, some prisoners could be freed 18 days before their conditional release date. That was increased to 35 days in March, and then to 70 days in May. The number of ECSL releases between October 17 and June 30 was 10,083, the data shows.

Horror moment shirtless ‘intruder' is arrested after ‘breaking into woman's house & chasing her with knife & scissors'

HORRIFYING footage shows the moment a shirtless "intruder" was arrested after allegedly breaking into a woman's house and chasing her with a knife and scissors. Dr Raisah Sawati, 37, says she was at home in Newton Heath, Manchester, around 11pm on Friday when she heard the sound of clattering dishes. 3 3 3 Before she knew it Raisah was face to face with a six-foot stranger standing in her kitchen. The doctor claims the man first shouted loudly in the street before pointing at her window. But moments later, she claims he broke into her house and grabbed a kitchen knife, then a frying pan, before following her into the living room with a pair of scissors. The terrified woman says she tried to reason with the man, who she said was muttering nonsense and appeared 'totally wired'. After eventually managing to phone the police, cops arrived within minutes and arrested the suspect on suspicion of aggravated burglary. Footage from Raisah's phone and indoor cameras captured the shocking moment armed officers stormed in and ordered the man to surrender. In the video, cops can be heard shouting: 'Stop resisting now' and 'Come downstairs right now'. A terrified Raisah could be heard screaming in fear behind the door as the man was cuffed. Earlier video footage from her house shows Raisah in a stand-off with the topless man as she desperately pleaded for him to stop. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said: "I was trying to get him to put the weapons down. "But his grip was really strong. He was talking all sorts of gibberish nonsense, his eyes look totally wired like I've never seen before." Raisah tried to coax him out by opening the front door, but says he refused to leave. Instead, she claims he followed her upstairs, where she barricaded herself in her bedroom and called 999 as the man banged on the door trying to get in. She added: "I managed to call 999. It felt like ages that I was trapped upstairs in the bedroom." Raisah told officers the man threatened to break in through the window if she didn't let him in. She claimed to officers: "I don't know who he is. He came in through the window, he was like, "if you don't let me in I'm going to come in through the kitchen window". "He came in through the window and he pulled a knife and wouldn't put it down. Then he chased me up here and I kept saying to him put it [the knife] down but he wouldn't." Forensics teams later collected evidence from the home, including the knife, scissors and frying pan allegedly used in the frightening ordeal. Raisah added: 'The last thing you expect is to not feel safe in your own home. "You think you're having a quiet night in… and then someone jumps in. 'All I could think was I was going to be stabbed or raped and nothing could've stopped him.

Moment bare-chested man is arrested after 'breaking into woman's home and threatening her with a knife and scissors' before she barricaded herself in a room

A topless man was arrested after allegedly climbing through a woman's kitchen window before threatening her with a knife, frying pan and pair of scissors. Dr Raisah Sawati, 37, claimed she heard 'clattering' and the sound of 'dishes falling' before she found herself face to face with the unknown intruder, who had made his way into the Newton Heath home at around 11pm on Friday. After around 15 minutes, armed officers arrived at the property and arrested the alleged attacker, handcuffing him on the landing at the top of her stairs as she filmed in shock through a gap in her bedroom door. Speaking of the ordeal, the doctor claimed: 'I was up in the bedroom and could hear someone outside on the street shouting down the phone loudly. 'I popped my head round the window and saw him walking topless down the street. He pointed at me but I ignored it and thought he must've thought I was someone else. 'The next thing I knew, I heard all this noise. It was clattering and the sound of dishes falling. He was standing in my kitchen with this kitchen knife, then he picked up a frying pan. He was this big six-foot man.' After trying to close the kitchen door, Dr Sawati claimed he was then able to yank it open, and followed her to the living room after picking up a pair of scissors. 'I was trying to get him to put the weapons down,' she said. 'But his grip was really strong. He was talking all sorts of gibberish nonsense, his eyes look totally wired like I've never seen before. 'I went back into the hall and tried to guide him out by opening the front door, but he wasn't leaving. I then went upstairs to try and alert someone and he followed me up. He was standing there with the pair of scissors. 'I knew I needed to call the police but I really didn't know what to do. I shut myself in [the bedroom] but he was banging on the door trying to get it open. 'I managed to call 999. It felt like ages that I was trapped upstairs in the bedroom.' Within around six minutes, Dr Sawati claimed a convoy of armed police arrived at her property and arrested the suspect on suspicion of aggravated burglary. She caught the incident on her mobile phone, with indoor security cameras also filming the ordeal. Police officers can be heard shouting at the man 'stop resisting now' and demanding he 'come downstairs right now', while the 37-year-old screams in terror. She claimed to officers: 'I don't know who he is. He came in through the window, he was like, "if you don't let me in I'm going to come in through the kitchen window". 'He came in through the window and he pulled a knife and wouldn't put it down. Then he chased me up here and I kept saying to him put it [the knife] down but he wouldn't.' Following the incident, police forensic teams took evidence from the property including the kitchen knife, scissors and frying pan that he brandished during the invasion. Frantic mobile phone footage showed the moment police questioned her about what happened as she can be heard saying: 'He was coming after me.' 'The last thing you expect is to not feel safe in your own home. When you think you're having a quiet night in and then someone jumps in. 'They asked me if I recognised him, but I told them I didn't have a clue who he was and that I couldn't get him to leave and put the weapons down,' she claimed. 'When he had the knife, all I was thinking was that I was going to be stabbed or raped and nothing could've stopped him.'
