Corpus Christi Crónica founder faces charges connected to illegal gambling raid
Police have served 37-year-old Eric Tunchez, founder of the Corpus Christi Crónica, with arrest warrants connected to an illegal gambling operation. Detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department Narcotics and Vice Investigations Division were following up on a search warrant executed on May 8 at Lucky Panda Game Room in the 5200 block of Ayers Street when they found that Tunchez had outstanding warrants, according to a news release published on May 21 by senior officer Jennifer Collier. Tunchez faces five charges: engaging in organized criminal activity — a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a maximum $10,000 fine — and Class A misdemeanors of keeping a gambling place, gambling promotion, possession of gambling equipment and intent to operate a game room in violation of regulations. Although police filed the charges in Nueces County, Tunchez explained in a phone interview with the Caller-Times on May 22 that he turned himself in to the San Patricio County Jail on May 21 after police notified him on May 16 that he had arrest warrants. During the phone interview, he denied the charges, saying that he believes them to be politically motivated because he is considering running for public office. He added that the charges target his work as a consultant who helps game room owners or small business owners navigate the legal process to obtain certificates of occupancy through the Corpus Christi Development Services Department and game room permits under the Nueces County game room ordinance. Tunchez did not confirm the name of the consulting firm, nor the status of the game room's permit. He said he is weighing options on filing a lawsuit against the city. 'I'm working with my legal team to clear my name at this point, but I don't want that to distract from my mission,' he said. Tunchez's online news source, based in Corpus Christi, began as a Facebook page in 2020. It has garnered more than 300,000 followers. In addition to the 52 patrons whom police officers cited for gambling misdemeanors during the search and investigation of the Lucky Panda Game Room on May 8, they also found and seized 145 illegal gambling components and more than $26,000 in U.S. currency and arrested four employees on gambling charges. On May 7, police raided the Lucky Spot Game Room on the 4100 block of Weber Road, where detectives found and seized 13 items of illegal gambling equipment and more than $6,500 in U.S. currency. Police arrested an employee and charged her with violation of the Nueces County game room ordinance, among other charges. In the follow-up investigation on May 21, detectives also arrested a 50-year-old woman on five outstanding warrants, according to a police department news release. Police and court records on Tunchez's arrest were not available as of May 22. Tunchez was arrested in 2020 on suspicion of assaulting his elderly stepfather but ultimately was not charged in that case, Nueces County records show. Police search for Alberta woman wrongfully released from a jail on fake papers
An Alberta woman is on the lam after Crown prosecutors say she was wrongfully released from an Edmonton area jail last month with allegedly fake release papers. Mackenzie Dawn Hardy, 24, is charged with several offences, including possession of stolen property, impaired driving, flight from police and driving without insurance or registration. She was arrested in March by Red Deer RCMP. The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service confirmed Wednesday that Hardy was released from custody after staff at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre, about 40 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, were shown documents saying her charges were stayed. They later learned those papers were fake. "As soon as ACPS became aware, we responded by seeking a warrant for her arrest. The ACPS has also referred the alleged use of fraudulent documents to the RCMP for investigation," said service spokesperson Michelle Davio in an email. "The ACPS takes this matter very seriously and steps have been taken by all parties to ensure this cannot happen in the future." In an interview, RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said Hardy was released in late April and police were notified days later. He said an Alberta-wide warrant has been issued for Hardy's arrest and efforts are being made to extend it Canada-wide. Asked why the public wasn't alerted to her release, he said she doesn't pose a risk to public safety. "She doesn't have a record that would demonstrate a risk to the public other than the fact that she has warrants for arrest," he said. 'Not going to catch me' A woman who identifies herself as Hardy has posted videos on the social media platform TikTok, where she taunts law enforcement and denies the papers being fake. "So, the government's f---d and I'm an escaped inmate right now," the woman says in one video. "They are not going to catch me because I'm one step ahead of them — too fast for those piggies to come after me." In another video, she said her boyfriend was given one year to live after being diagnosed with cancer and that her release was a "gift from God." "I was set free right when he needed me the most," she said. Hundreds of social media users left comments on the videos encouraging her to turn herself in. "I'm not running away from justice — I'm running toward life before it slips away," she said. Savinkoff said Hardy's arrest is inevitable and that she might not be doing herself any favours with her social media content. "I have no doubt that the posts that she's making would certainly be presented to the courts," he said.

Judge issues warrant for 'in hiding' jockey after he fails to do community service for drugs charge
A Judge has ordered an arrest warrant to be issued for a Co Donegal horse-racing jockey who is 'in hiding' over a drug debt after he failed to complete a community service order. Oran Brown was convicted in court after being caught with over €11,000 worth of drugs at his home in June 2020. Advertisement In 2023, the Lifford sportsman was ordered to do 240 hours of community service after gardaí raided his home and found drugs and cash. Last month, Donegal Circuit Court heard that he has been unable to undertake that part of his sentence. The case was adjourned to today to see if Brown could be contacted to explain why he had not undertaken the community service in lieu of the prison sentence. Brown's barrister, Mr Peter Nolan, explained that his client has been in hiding over a drug debt. Advertisement 'Oran Brown has an individual looking for him to pay a drug debt. 'He is in hiding. He can't comply with the community service order as he is in fear of third parties,' he said. The case was brought back before the court by the Probation Service due to Brown's non-compliance with the order. The case was mentioned again on Tuesday, but the Probation Service told the court that they had made 'numerous efforts' to contact Brown but had still not heard back from him. Advertisement A spokesperson for the service said they had tried to reach the accused by phone and had sent him letters since last November, but had still not heard back from him. They also confirmed that Brown had not completed any of the 240 community service hours imposed in lieu of time in jail. Judge John Aylmer said he was satisfied that Brown was aware of the order and issued a warrant. Previously, Brown was sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year term in prison, which was suspended for three and a half years, for the possession of cannabis for the purpose of selling or supplying to others. Advertisement He was also ordered to complete 240 hours of community service in lieu of 6 months in prison on a charge of the unlawful possession of cocaine. Gardai, armed with a search warrant, swooped on Brown's home at Collate, Lifford on June 25th, 2020. Detectives seized €8,668 worth of cannabis and cocaine with a street value of €2,504.81. Some of the cannabis was found in deal bags. A Zopiclone tablet, valued at €2, was also located in the raid. Advertisement A grinder, weighing scales and a quantity of Ziploc bags were also found. Quantities of Diazepam and Xanax were found in a Tommy Hilfiger bag in the property, while gardaí observed a line of suspected cocaine on top of a dresser. A quantity of cocaine was found inside a safe, which also contained €7,225 and £2,480 sterling in cash. Brown was searched, and a cylinder containing cannabis and a grinder was located on his person. Almost £9,000 in cash was found inside a safe and, after being arrested, Brown told gardaí he 'smoked a lot of weed and sniffed cocaine'. He added, "I won't lie, I sold a few bags of weed too." Brown said the cash was given to him by his parents and grandparents for his birthday the month before. He refused to give gardaí the PIN for his mobile phone as he said there was 'stuff on the phone' that he didn't want them to see. Detective Garda Michelle Kelly said gardaí were unable to access data from the phone as the PIN was not provided. In court in 2023, Mr Nolan said his client, who he said was a 'conditional apprentice' at the time, began taking cocaine 'to keep the weight stabilised'. 'Stupidity led him to these circumstances,' Mr Nolan said. At the time of sentencing, Judge Aylmer said, 'It was clear from all the paraphernalia found on the premises that there was a significant amount of dealing going on. 'This is an unusual case where he deserves a second chance. It is with some hesitation, but it is a case that it may be dealt with better on a non-custodial basis given all of the features."
