At least 4 people involved in killing of Mexico City mayor's senior aides, police say
MEXICO CITY (AP) — At least four people were involved in the killing of the personal secretary and a close adviser of Mexico City 's Mayor Clara Brugada, the capital's police chief said Wednesday, as more details emerged of the worst attack against public officials in the capital in recent years. Pablo Vázquez Camacho said investigators had identified and found a motorcycle and two other vehicles used in the escape of the gunman who killed the two officials Tuesday morning as they travelled in a vehicle along a busy thoroughfare. Brugada's personal secretary, Ximena Guzmán, and an adviser, José Muñoz, were shot dead in Guzmán's car, authorities said. Mexico City chief prosecutor Bertha Alcalde Luján said the gunman had fled on a motorcycle that was hidden nearby and then changed vehicles twice as he and others fled into neighboring Mexico State. Clothes were recovered in the vehicles and were being analyzed, but investigators could not yet offer a possible motive, the prosecutor said. She said Guzmán was shot eight times and Muñoz four times. The attack, which happened at around 7 a.m., left four bullet holes clustered on the driver's side of the windshield. One body lay on the pavement. President Claudia Sheinbaum, who is an ally of Brugada and a former mayor of Mexico City before winning the presidency last year, had declined to speculate on the possible involvement of organized crime during her press briefing earlier Wednesday.

Mexico City mayor's personal secretary, adviser shot dead in morning ambush
Two top aides to the mayor of Mexico City have been shot dead in the latest attack against public officials in the Latin American country. Private secretary Ximena Guzman and adviser Jose Munoz were shot dead on Tuesday in an early morning ambush in the central neighbourhood of Moderna, city authorities said. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada condemned the killings and pledged to continue her administration's 'relentless fight against insecurity'. 'Investigating, clarifying and ensuring there is no impunity is our commitment,' Brugada said during a news conference. Mexico has one of the highest murder rates on the planet, largely due to violence driven by drug cartels, but the capital is known for its relative security compared with the rest of the country. Reporting from Mexico City, Al Jazeera's John Holman said there had been 50 political murders in the country in the first three months of the year alone, though political killings are relatively rare in the capital. 'The reasons for this one are still unknown. But there are powerful criminal groups in the capital fighting for territory and control of lucrative rackets,' Holman said. 'Politicians can get in the way, as elsewhere in the country.' Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a Brugada ally who previously served as the capital's mayor, expressed condolences over the killings and said her government would ensure that 'justice is served'. 'We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have worked in our movement for a long time,' Sheinbaum said. 'We know them, we stand with their families, and we will give her [Brugada] all the support the city needs from the Mexican government.' In 2020, Mexico City's security chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, survived an ambush by gunmen that killed two of his bodyguards and a bystander.

Mexico City mayor's aides shot dead in ‘contract killing'
Two aides to the mayor of Mexico City have been murdered in broad daylight in what appears to have been a contract killing in the heart of the capital. Ximena Guzmán, the personal secretary to Clara Brugada, and José Muñoz, her political adviser, were both killed shortly after Guzmán had pulled up near a metro stop in the Moderna neighbourhood, apparently to give a lift to her colleague. Security camera footage showed a gunman standing on the street, wearing a white T-shirt and a motorcycle helmet, firing several shots at Guzmán inside the car before turning his weapon on Muñoz as Muñoz tried to escape. Both victims died at the scene. The car drove on for a few metres with Guzmán slumped at the wheel
