Fire breaks out at Ubi coffee shop, 1 taken to hospital, Singapore News
A fire broke out at a coffee shop in Ubi on Friday night (May 30), involving the contents of a food stall on the first floor. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 301, Ubi Avenue 1, at about 11.35pm and extinguished it with two water jets. Seventy six residents were safely evacuated, with one senior citizen taken to Singapore General Hospital for follow-up and observation due to smoke inhalation. A few other stalls in the coffee shop also sustained heat and smoke damage, they added. The MP for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim thanked SCDF in a Facebook post and added that residents on the third and fourth floors could return to their units safely at about 1.40am. A Malaysian woman who wanted to watch G-Dragon in concert accidentally bought tickets for American saxophonist Kenny G instead, taking to Xiaohongshu to share her (frankly hilarious) story. Maybe she got overexcited and only saw the capital letter the two musicians share in common. "I thought I was lucky! I got in (to the ticketing page), picked my seat and paid!" wrote the netizen going by the name Piann Lee. "But when I received my confirmation email, I found out I had bought tickets for Kenny G, not G-Dragon. "I made a fool of myself!" Two tickets for the (wrong) concert on July 13 at Genting cost her RM875 (S$266). On the other hand, BigBang star G-Dragon, 38, is bringing his Ubermensch Tour to Kuala Lumpur on June 19 and 20, with tickets starting from RM459. Netizens were tickled, making jokes about "Kenny G-Dragon" and saying that the 68-year-old woodwind virtuoso may see her in the audience and wonder why she's so enthusiastic with a lightstick, as is customary for K-pop fans. One netizen also felt a sense of schadenfreude (joy at someone else's misfortune), as they were also unable to get tickets to watch G-Dragon. Piann was also asked whether she would be selling the tickets, but said she has decided against it. "I initially planned to attend the G-Dragon concert with my colleague since my husband isn't interested in G-Dragon," she wrote. Revealing 4th cancer diagnosis, Law Kar Ying says he's at peace with death, Entertainment News
Hong Kong veteran singer-actor Law Kar Ying revealed he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The 78-year-old was in China to promote his stage play Mr Donkey recently, when he revealed his condition in a video interview published on May 27. He said: "I am diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time. I asked the doctor, for prostate cancer, how long more do I have to live? If I undergo treatment with injections and medication, he said I have about eight years left. "Now that I know that I have about eight to nine years left, to be able to live till 90, that's a long life. Why do I need to live even longer? I am not afraid [of death] at all." Kar Ying, who is married to Hong Kong singer-actress Liza Wang, was diagnosed with stage-three liver cancer in 2004 and underwent surgery in 2005. In 2013, he was found to have a two-centimetre tumour in his liver and went for surgery again. He was found to have cancerous cells in his prostate in 2019 and underwent surgery in the same year. He said in his latest interview: "I am not going to go through chemotherapy or electrotherapy. I am just going to say goodbye to everybody comfortably." The interviewer asked him to share his "secret" to his vigour at this age, to which he said it's because he's "not afraid of death". Kar Ying added that when he was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he recited the Heart Sutra every day. He said: "I had too many thoughts on my mind, so I stopped thinking about them and recited the Heart Sutra. I came to a realisation - 'emptiness'. Life is empty, we come with nothing and leave with nothing. So if there is no concern, [there is no fear]. I think that's what life is all about." Before turning to movies, Kar Ying was a Cantonese opera singer in the 1970s. He is widely known for playing the monk Tang Sanzang in Stephen Chow's A Chinese Odyssey movies (1995). In recent years, Kar Ying continues to perform opera, including his collaboration with the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Artists Club to perform at the Kreta Ayer People's Theatre in Singapore in 2023. He thought it was time to film, only to be surprised with a chorus. Local actor Zheng Geping turned 61 yesterday (May 27), and his family as well as the crew and cast members on the set of their drama The Cellphone Swap threw him a surprise celebration. In a video posted on his Instagram account, his actress wife Hong Huifang brings out what appears to be a chocolate cake while the crew, his daughter Tay Ying, son Calvert and soon-to-be son-in-law Wu Sihan sing him a birthday song. "I thought they brought my scene forward before lunch break, didn't expect this! I was caught off-guard!" said Geping in the caption. According to Tay Ying, it was planned by the production team and she thanked them for involving the family in the "sweet surprise". The celebration didn't stop there as the family of five also had dinner at the Chinese restaurant The Black Pearl. The Cellphone Swap — which also stars Star Search 2024's second runner-up Jona Chung, Zhai Siming, Kendra Sow, Angel Lim and Raynold Tan — delves into the phone-addicted generation, exploring how young people navigate self-discovery and seek a more meaningful life.
