PM Modi to address G7 outreach session today

File photo: PM Modi (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi landed in Calgary on Monday evening (local time) to participate in the G7 Summit that is taking place at the nearby Kananaskis village in Alberta. During his 23-hour stay in Canada, Prime Minister Modi will address the G7 Outreach Session on Tuesday and have bilateral meetings, including with host Canadian PM Mark Carney, before departing for Croatia on Tuesday evening. This will be Modi's first visit to Canada since 2015. Official sources said his programme is still being worked on to ensure as many bilateral engagements as possible. There was no clarity till late on Monday if a formal bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump was going to take place. A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also not ruled out. This will be India's 12th participation, and Modi's 6th, in Outreach Sessions of G7 Summits. India has been regularly getting invitations for the G7 since 2019, in a sign of the importance the group of most economically advanced countries attaches to India. Indian govt sources highlighted the fact that India's economy is now larger than at least three G7 member countries - France, Italy, and Canada. "India in 2023 concluded its G20 presidency and is a strong voice of the Global South. India has always brought the issues of the Global South to the fore during its interventions made at the previous G7 summits," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo In the last G7 Summit at Apulia in 2024, PM Modi joined other invited countries in the G7 to discuss critical topics such as AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. "This session was a crucial platform where the G7 and Outreach Countries shared their views and perspectives, furthering the collective effort to address global challenges," said an official. According to Indian authorities, from its initial focus on economic issues, the G7 has gradually become a forum for consultation to find common ground on major global challenges, including peace and security, counter- terrorism , development, education, health, environment and climate change. Modi has in the past raised the issue of terrorism and is again expected to do so, as India looks to galvanise support for its campaign to isolate Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack.

Pakistan continues ceasefire violations along LoC for fourth consecutive night"

Pakistani troops continued to violate the ceasefire along the LoC, resorting to unprovoked firing in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch and Kupwara districts, army officials said, reported PTI on Monday. This was the fourth consecutive night that Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC) and came amid heightened tension between New Delhi and Islamabad following last week's A defence spokesperson said Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara and Poonch districts during the night of April 27-28, PTI reported. Indian troops responded swiftly and effectively, the spokesperson added, with no reports of any casualties. Tensions between India and Pakistan have heightened following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In response, security agencies have ramped up their efforts to track down those responsible for the attack. India has taken a series of stringent actions against Pakistan, including the expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, the suspension of the over six-decade-old Indus Waters Treaty, and the immediate closure of the Attari land-transit post. These decisions were made on Wednesday following a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pledged that India will "identify, track, and punish" every terrorist and their "backers" behind the deadly Pahalgam attack. In retaliation, Pakistan has suspended all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement. Meanwhile, police have released sketches of three suspects believed to be involved in the Pahalgam attack. The suspects are identified as Hashim Musa alias Suleman and Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai, both from Pakistan, and Adil Hussain Thoker, a resident of Anantnag district. A reward of Rs 20 lakh has been announced for credible information leading to their arrest. Additionally, in South Kashmir, security forces have demolished the homes of three more suspected terrorists, bringing the total number of houses demolished to nine since the Pahalgam attack. The properties belong to Adnan Shafi Dar (Shopian), Amir Nazir (Pulwama), and Jameel Ahmad (Bandipora). In response to India's actions, Pakistan has put the 1972 Shimla Agreement on hold and closed its airspace to Indian carriers. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while supporting a decisive fight against terrorism, cautioned against actions that might alienate innocent people in the region. "The people of Kashmir have openly condemned terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians. It's time to build on this support but avoid any misplaced actions that could harm innocent lives. Punish the guilty, but ensure innocent people are not caught in the crossfire," Abdullah stated on X. (With inputs from PTI)

Helinox Has Upgraded Its Cult-Classic Camp Chair

Interestingly, the added ounces come despite Helinox opting to use a 300-denier bluesign-certified recycled polyester, which is 50 percent lighter than the 600-denier used in the original Chair One. The added weight appears to come from chunkier mounting blocks and a second tensioning line that runs along the circumference of the seat. This simple addition does a superb job of distributing weight evenly across the frame, making it feel sturdier, despite the fabric being more breathable. In addition to the use of recycled polyester, Helinox has also started to use lightweight aluminum poles, made from repurposed raw materials. This proprietary aluminum alloy is made using the scraps usually discarded during the manufacturing of traditional DAC tent poles. But they're not perfect. For starters, if you're sitting on anything other than firm ground, the feet will sink in. Helinox knows this happens, which is why they offer a ground sheet ($35), which attaches to the bottom of the chair to keep its legs above ground, and Vibram rubber feet ($40), which also prevent sinking. Both are neat solutions, but both add weight, bulk, and expense. That said, if you're not through-hiking, the rocking feet ($69), which turns the chair into a rocker, are almost worth it just for the disapproving looks from the fast-and-lite brigade. A Lot of Alternatives As I mentioned before, there are now countless imitators, but also some genuinely great and downright comfortable camping chairs. WIRED reviews operations manager Scott Gilbertson loves his Nemo Moonlite camp chair ($160), which packs a fraction smaller and weighs just 2 pounds, 2 ouces, and he was surprised by the quality of REI's 1-pound Flextite Air Chair ($100). Decathlon's Quechua MH500 folding camping chair is a sensational value at $60, but having compared them side-by-side at music festivals last summer, it's not quite as stable, comfortable, or undeniably cool, as the premium-priced Helinox. The compact design of Helinox chairs means it's easy to sling in the car, backpack, or even tote and enjoy a comfortable, supportive seat wherever you end up. They're great for festivals, picnics, hikes, and watching sports. My ultralight buddies have mocked me for carrying a Chair Zero on more than one bikepacking trip, but I'm the one laughing after 100 miles in the saddle. If you're looking for a premium sitting experience from the makers of the original suspended camp chair, you won't be disappointed. Photograph: Chris Haslam

FM: Egypt-EU partnership ‘important' to achieve stability in Horn of Africa

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of the partnership between Egypt and the European Union to achieve security and stability in the Horn of Africa. The minister's remarks were made during his meeting with European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber on Tuesday. The meeting falls within the framework of enhancing consultation and coordination between Egypt and the EU to achieve security and stability in the Horn of Africa. Egypt is keen on finding peaceful solutions and resolving regional conflicts through constructive dialogue and joint cooperation, Abdelatty said. He also stressed the need to intensify international and regional efforts to address security challenges facing the countries of the region, topped by fighting terrorism and extremism. Abdelatty also reviewed Egypt's efforts to shore up stability in the Horn of Africa, citing Egypt's diplomatic mediation to settle regional conflicts. Egypt attaches strategic importance to strengthening its ties with countries of the region as the fundamental pillar of regional and continental security, he made it clear. As for the situation in Sudan, Abdelatty welcomed the EU envoy's recent visit to Port Sudan, expressing his keenness to learn about her impression about the developments there. On this score, he called for full respect for Sudan's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and preserving the Sudanese State, its capabilities and institutions. Egypt backs international and regional initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Sudanese crisis, he said. Abdelatty also briefed the EU envoy on Egypt's intensive efforts to coordinate with international parties and representatives of Sudanese political forces, to support settlement efforts, reach a ceasefire, and ensure unrestricted access of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people. They exchanged views on a number of security and political issues and challenges to the Horn of Africa. Abdelatty also listened to the EU's assessment of the situation in the region, stressing the importance of supporting the stability of Somalia and respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed Egypt's keenness to continue its efforts to support the state institutions in Somalia. Abdelatty underlined the growing security challenges in the Red Sea, a matter that requires boosting regional cooperation between countries bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to ensure the stability of international shipping routes and lanes. For her part, the EU envoy to the Horn of Africa expressed the EU's appreciation for Egypt's active role in solving African issues. She further noted that the EU attaches great importance to protecting the security of the Red Sea and the stability of the Horn of Africa. Weber said she looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Egypt within the framework of international efforts to bring stability to the Horn of Africa. She underlined Egypt's crucial role as a fundamental pillar of regional security and stability.
