Dani Dyer: ‘I just never really cared about my face'

For years, Dani Dyer, the daughter of renowned actor Danny Dyer, didn't think much about skincare, frequently wiping off her make-up with 'any old face wipe'. 'I think for me, when you're younger, you don't really know anything about skincare routines,' she says. 'I mean, I loved a face wipe – I was guilty of that. Advertisement 'I just never really cared about my face.' Dani Dyer said she used to 'never really care' about her face (Adam Davy/PA) But things changed when she developed melasma – a skin condition that causes patches of pigmentation – after a summer abroad and becoming pregnant. 'It literally went from like nothing to just a massive flare-up,' she recalls. 'Honestly, I hadn't really heard about pigmentation.' It was only after a dermatologist confirmed what a friend had already suggested that Dyer, 28, started to take skincare more seriously. She found implementing a routine, balancing her hormones and sticking to simple skincare has helped manage it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ♡ Dani Dyer ♡ (@danidyerxx) Her routine includes a mix of products she's come to trust. 'Eucerin's cleansers are amazing – their serums, the eye cream, their SPFs,' she says, 'it's made a real difference.' Now, in the lead-up to her wedding to West Ham and England footballer Jarrod Bowen, Dyer isn't taking any risks. 'I've been having facials. I've had dermaplaning – I've tried the polynucleotides injectable treatment but oh, it's done nothing,' she laughs. 'But I'm not changing anything when it comes to my skin […] I'm just using what I like to use.' Advertisement As a mum of three, Dyer doesn't have time for lengthy routines in the morning. 'It's go, go, go. I literally just put a day cream on and have a coffee,' she says. Evenings, though, are her time. 'My night time consists of a half-hour routine, sometimes a bit longer. I love the end of the day, I cleanse then serum, eye cream, night cream – then I just oil everything and lay in bed. That's my favourite time of day.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by ♡ Dani Dyer ♡ (@danidyerxx) Since finding fame on reality show Love Island in 2018, Dyer has come to appreciate the benefits of wearing less make-up and letting her skin breathe. 'Everyone went through that phase of piling it all on and thinking more was better. But actually, now I know that less is more,' she says. 'Your skin just feels so much better.' However, one thing she wishes she'd known sooner was the importance of SPF. 'I never thought you had to SPF – ever! Advertisement 'I used to just lay in the sun and just turn my face and my body without anything on,' she says. 'But it's just about adding one more product into your routine and it's so important.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by ♡ Dani Dyer ♡ (@danidyerxx) Finding products that feel easy to use has helped her stick with it. 'I think I should have just done my research a bit more, rather than using any old brand,' she says. Dyer champions knowledge when it comes to skincare following her melasma diagnosis, noting, 'If you're going through a breakout or suffering with hyperpigmentation go and see a skincare professional, because sometimes the things on the shelves, you think they're good and they're not.' These days, she's keen to share what she's learned, even if her younger sister doesn't always take the advice. 'You know what they're like,' she laughs, 'when you're a teenager and someone's like, do this, do that – it makes you want to do the opposite. But she's got a lot better now.' Dani Dyer's sister, Sunnie Jo (left), doesn't always listen to her skincare advice (Ian West/PA) Lifestyle Vogue Williams: 'I won't be apologetic' about doin... Read More Now, Dyer isn't aiming for perfection but consistency. 'No one's skin is ever perfect, is it? You have your good days and your bad days,' she says. 'And the more you stress about it, the worse it gets.' Advertisement Social media, she adds, is slowly catching up with reality. 'We all went through a phase where we were editing our photos and trying to show how perfect we all were, but we're not,' she says. 'It's good to show the two sides of you: Here I am day-to-day, and here I am when I've got the glam on.' As for her wedding prep, Dyer isn't overhauling her routine for fancy creams, but rather maintaining what's working. 'Now I don't really have to worry about my skin as much,' she says. 'It's nice not having to think about it too much.'

A Celeb Facialist Gave Me the Scoop on What to Buy From Amazon's Beauty Sale—Her Top Picks Start at $5

Curating the perfect beauty routine requires patience; it's a lot of trial and error to figure out what works for your skin. Sure, you can do a deep dive to find out which products your favorite celebrities use—but who has time for that? Personally, I like to go straight to the source: enter Cynthia Franco, the Los Angeles-based esthetician behind the flawless complexions of stars like Sandra Bullock and Olivia Wilde. In fact, her exclusive two-hour, $550-and-up exfoliating treatments that reveal a red carpet-worthy glow from head to toe are favorites among her A-list clients. So, naturally, when Amazon launched its Summer Beauty Event, I wanted to pick Franco's brain on what skincare products are actually worth buying to get glowing skin at home (and on the road) without breaking the bank. Below are Franco's top picks from the beauty sale as well as the Amazon deals that she (and I) won't be passing up while they're marked down. Keep scrolling for toiletry bag must-haves and bathroom counter staples she recommends, as brand-name beauty products start at just $2. If you don't have the time to stop by Franco's West Hollywood studio for one of her signature facials (or, if you're waiting for the opening of her new Beverly Grove spa Altagracia to open like me and the rest of L.A.), don't worry. All you need is one of Elemis' Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads. "It's a bit of a facial in a pad," Franco said of the travel-friendly product. "You'll look glowy in an instant ." Whether you're at home, on a flight, or getting ready in your hotel room, you'll unlock smoother and more awake-looking skin with just one swipe. Amazon is a treasure trove for affordable K-beauty skincare. During the beauty sale, Franco insisted I check out Beauty of Joseon, a popular brand behind some of Amazon's top-selling skincare products. "There are so many things to like from this K-beauty brand," she said. "This mask is one of my favorites for oily to combination skin because it controls sebum (oil) production." As Franco's "absolute favorite sunscreen," the Prevention+ Daily Ultimate SPF Moisturizer is a two-in-one toiletry bag mainstay that hydrates the skin while protecting it from harmful UV rays. The long-lasting moisture and sun protection keep your complexion dewy until it's time to reapply. Don't miss this chance to grab it on rare sale for $42. Shopping on a budget? At 46 percent off, the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Moisturizing Face Serum SPF 60, $12, is an affordable sunscreen option that infuses the skin with moisturizing and sun damage-reversing Vitamin E. Discounted or not, "Thayers is always a good buy," according to Franco, who recommends adding the brand's top-selling face toner to your cart. At $5, this travel-size product is what she calls "extra dewy goodness for hydration," especially when you're traveling. While talking skincare, Franco couldn't contain her excitement about Medicube's collagen mask. "Um, have you tried this?" she asked me. "Wow. Just wow." It's rare to see products with drugstore-friendly price tags in Franco's facial lineup, but you'd never guess that this peel-off K-beauty mask was under $20 with its smoothing, firming, and moisturizing formula. If you took a peek inside Franco's toiletry bag, odds are, you'd find some aromatherapy goodies like this Organic Rose Water Spray from Eve Hansen. "Did you know that roses are the highest vibration out of any flower?" she began. "We all need a little extra higher vibration when we are traveling." In addition to boosting skin hydration, this spray ensures you have the stress-relieving, calming, and mood-enhancing benefits of rose essential oil at the ready. Franco takes her own glow just as seriously as her clients', and there's only one serum that delivers the brightening power she needs: the Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Face Serum. "I use it a lot," she admitted. The formula's all-star ingredients are vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, which work together to brighten, hydrate, plump, and firm. Shopping on a budget? The K-Beauty-loved SeoulCeuticals Day Glow Serum, on sale for $16, packs the same brightening punch with its Vitamin C-rich formula, which also features a skin-healthy blend of ferulic and hyaluronic acids. When working with celebrities, Franco always needs to be one step ahead of "facial emergencies," which is why she always has Starface pimple patches handy. "They're just the very best pimple patches on the market," she declared. Each star-shaped patch contains 100 percent hydrocolloid and fights blemishes by shrinking spots and reducing redness "overnight," according to reviewers. Shopping on a budget? Though the Starface pimple patches have Franco's seal of approval, they come in packs of 32. During Amazon's beauty event, you can get a pack of 300 pimple patches from Daolyo on sale for $8.
