Winds pick up through the weekend

Winds will pick up through the weekend across New Mexico. The strongest winds will be Sunday and Monday when areas of blowing dust and a high fire danger will develop. It was a calmer day across New Mexico Friday afternoon, but winds were still gusting over 30 mph in a few parts of the state. Temperatures were warmer across the entire state as well today with highs back up to around average again for the middle of May. Breezier winds will return to the state again Saturday afternoon with gusts as high as 45 mph. This will bring a high fire danger across the state again during the afternoon hours. High temperatures will also be even warmer Saturday afternoon. Evaporating rain showers will be possible in parts of the state Saturday afternoon as well, which could produce locally windy conditions. A storm system scrapes across New Mexico Sunday and Monday. This will bring high winds back in the afternoon, especially for areas along and south of I-40. This is where wind gusts up to 55 mph will be possible both afternoons. Areas of blowing dust are likely in southern New Mexico, which could close highways and interstates again. A high fire danger will also develop with these high winds and dry conditions. Meanwhile, isolated showers and storms will move through northwestern and northern New Mexico. Some snow will be possible across mountain peaks as well. An isolated shower may make it as far south as Santa Fe and Albuquerque Monday afternoon. Winds will quickly die down Monday night with calmer conditions by the middle of next week. An area of high pressure will develop over New Mexico, bringing in calmer, but more dry weather. Temperatures will also be climbing. Some of the warmest weather so far this year will arrive next Friday, with Albuquerque's first 90° day of the year possible. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Windy weather brings back a wildfire danger to parts of New Mexico Tuesday

Windy weather will be returning to New Mexico this week. Wind gusts up to 55 mph will bring a high fire danger and blowing dusts to parts of the state. Warmer weather moved into New Mexico to start this week with high temperatures above average for the middle of May. It's also a much drier week across New Mexico. Winds picked up in western parts of the state with gusts up over 40 mph near the Arizona state line. Winds are settling down tonight with above average low temperatures into Tuesday morning. Windy weather will develop Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon across the entire state. West, southwest winds will gust anywhere from 30 to 55 mph throughout the afternoon. This will bring a high fire danger across southern, southwestern, western, and central New Mexico both days. The highest fire danger will be for areas that didn't see the wetting precipitation that many saw last week. That's helping with the fire danger in eastern and northern New Mexico. Blowing dust will also be possible in dust prone areas, but especially in southern and southwest New Mexico. A cold front will move across the state Tuesday, bringing cooler temperatures through Thursday afternoon. Winds settle down each afternoon into the end of this week, with the calmest day on Friday. Temperatures will start a warming trend Friday afternoon. That warming trend will continue through Sunday, but the winds will be picking up again through the weekend with Sunday the windiest afternoon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
