New Orleans' Harkins, The Florist makes Mother's Day special one rose at a time
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Whether it's flowers or rose petals, for years, Harkins, The Florist has been a go-to spot for Mother's Day arrangements. 'The moms love tulips. A hydrangea is very popular, and I think this year our most popular arrangement has some stargazer lilies,' said florist Alexandra Theodorakos. 'Mother's Day Special': Louisiana Right to Life offers free baby essentials to mothers Theodorakos says Mother's Day is always a high-volume holiday, prepping in advance to make sure everyone finds a perfect bouquet for a special woman in their life. 'Our incredible design manager, Sabrina, ensures all the products are top-notch. She gets here early every morning, goes through all of it, and takes out anything that we would not give to the moms on the most important day. We're constantly changing water. We're constantly trimming the ends and keeping things fresh,' said Theodorakos. As the arrangements line the front of the shop, those at the shop say it's fulfilling to see the joy they bring to customers. 'Seeing people's faces light up when we can give them the arrangements, and they're bringing them to their mom. Just making sure that their moms are appreciated and being a part of people's lives in that way is what's really special about it,' said Theodorakos. As Sed Wallace stopped by to pick up his flowers, he says he always trusts Harkins, The Florist for the best roses in town. 'My mom means everything to me. That's my favorite lady in the whole world. Well, she gave birth to me. If it weren't for her, none of us would be here. What to know about last-minute shopping for Mother's Day flowers
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Flower sales are in full bloom at local shops around the country. In West Springfield, Willow and Moss Flowers have been designing bouquets all weekend long through extended hours. This week alone, the shop will complete nearly 300 deliveries, and despite inflation and tariffs on flowers, you can still go all out for mom. 'Families First Fest Western Mass' held in Springfield 'Mostly they come from South America, so we haven't seen that much of a bump, just a slight increase for now,' said Ahrayah Julian, Owner of Willow and Moss. Tulips and peonies have been a hit this holiday. Both are locally grown and have seen no impact on price. Vases are also made in the U.S. and also haven't made as much of an impact on the wallet. 'People love mixed arrangements, those seem to be the most popular versus, like, a dozen roses,' Julian said. 'You can get a big, lush bouquet, but it doesn't break the bank.' According to Florist Review, Americans are expected to spend more than $3 billion on arrangements this Mother's Day. Flower shops are blooming ahead of mothers day, yet to feel the impacts of tariffs
With Mother's Day this Sunday — floral shops are blooming with business. Inside Cardell Floral, it's been a busy day fulfilling orders, answering calls, and making deliveries. Mother's Day is the second busiest week for Jill Lascarbeau and her team. "It's a wonderful business to be in and bring joy to people," smiled Lescarbeau. This year, she said all eyes have been on yellow roses for bouquets. Those roses are from South America — and could come with a higher price tag. "It really is something we've never experienced before," she said. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend more than $3 billion on flowers alone. Tariffs are the unexpected thorn florists did not see coming this year. Now, they are preparing for the squeeze. "We don't know the full extent yet because we purchased roses and flowers ahead of Mother's Day," Lescarbeau said. "Things have gone up I don't know the full impact yet." Despite the financial pressure, Lascarbeau finds peace in the petals and creating beautiful bouquets for customers.
