Bus drivers, passengers must wear seat belts, says JPJ

It is the driver's responsibility to ensure all passengers are secured with seat belts before the bus departs, according to JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : All drivers and passengers of express and tour buses will be required to wear seat belts from July 1, says road transport department (JPJ) director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli. He said this applies to buses manufactured after January 2020, while buses built before 2020 will be given a grace period to install seat belts, Berita Harian reported. He added that drivers must remind passengers to wear their seat belts at the start of every journey and ensure it is worn at all times. According to Aedy, if it was found that the driver failed to do so and some passengers did not buckle up, then they along with the driver and the bus company will all be issued a summons. 'If the driver has reminded the passengers and they still refuse to wear seat belts, then, only the passengers will be fined. 'Naturally, we will review CCTV footage and question passengers to confirm whether a reminder was given,' he was quoted as saying. Aedy said it is the driver's responsibility to ensure all passengers are secured with seat belts before the bus departs, and those who fail to do so will be fined RM300. He said JPJ will not compromise on the matter, as discussions have already been held with bus operators, and guidelines have been issued regarding the directive.
