Singapore ponders caning punishment for scammers

Singapore is considering drastic action to tackle its scam epidemic - the introduction of caning for offenders. 0 Singaporeans lost an average of $4031 each to scams in 2023, putting the island state top of the global league table, according to the Financial Times. This is ascribed to their prosperity, embrace of digital services and compliance with authority. The country is now pondering a new way to deter potential scammers: corporal punishment. In response to a suggestion in parliament, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling recently said: 'We will consider Dr Tan's suggestion for caning to be prescribed for certain scam-related offences, recognising the serious harm they can cause.' Loretta Yuen, chair of the fraud committee at the Association of Banks in Singapore is backing the idea, telling the FT: "We believe in caning as a strong deterrent." Adds Yuen: 'It's a deterrent, but there is also a sense of revenge to it.'

Man nabbed in probe into alleged abuse of 3-year-old nephew

Seberang Perai Utara deputy police chief C Tharmalingam said the child's father saw his former brother-in-law caning the boy during a video call. PETALING JAYA : Penang police have arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly abusing his three-year-old nephew in Pulau Mertajam, Penaga, last Friday. Seberang Perai Utara deputy police chief C Tharmalingam said the suspect was arrested at about noon yesterday in Bertam after the boy's father filed a police report, Bernama reported. He said the father, who lives in Kelantan and had divorced the child's mother, had made a video call to talk to him on Friday when he saw his former brother-in-law caning him. The father said the boy was crying. The suspect, who has been remanded for four days, stayed in the same house as the former wife. Tharmalingam said the man claimed he did not abuse his nephew but was only caning him because he cried often. He said a medical examination found bruises on the child's legs.
