Nighttime bowfishing temporarily allowed on Lake Minnetonka
Nighttime bowfishing hasn't been allowed in Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota for over 10 years. The local conservation district brought it back temporarily to deal with a growing carp population, but neighbors aren't thrilled with the lights and sounds that come with it. It was roughly a month ago when Jay Nygard took a video outside his Orono home. "It was just the lights! You'd be in there watching TV and everything was lit up like you wouldn't believe" said Nygard. From April 24 - June 30th, the agency regulating Lake Minnetonka approved a special permit allowing nighttime bow fishing in 4 areas: Harrisons Bay West Arm Jennings Halstead Bay Which Nygard wasn't aware of at the time of the video, so he took the initiative to se what they were actually doing and reached out to fisherman. "A I was out there, I was also considering the people on the shore. How do we solve this problem?" said Nygard. Curtis Cich is a bowfishing guide across the state, hoping to help find a solution to the problem these invasive species present. "They'll go down and dig up all the native plants and will eat all of the eggs of the game fish," said Cich. Cich says some of the bays are seeing over 900 carp per acre. But the best time to bowfish is at night with special lights. "With the lights we can see all the way to the bottom of the lake, where in the daytime we're seeing them in the shallows and chasing them," Cich added. "This little bit of light at night is a trade-off for making their lake better overall." "I haven't heard anyone disagree that there's a carp issue in Lake Minnetonka, there has been since I was young, but how do you deal with it?" Nygard added. WCCO received the following statement from the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District: "Common carp are invasive to Lake Minnetonka, and unfortunately, their growing population threatens the quality of this much-loved community resource. As part of our efforts to bring a greater range of recreation to more parties and manage the carp population, the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District approved nighttime bowfishing on four bays, between April 24-June 30, bowfishing participants must have a permit to participate and follow all approved regulations, including hours, lighting and noise limits. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol is enforcing these regulations, and we encourage community members to report any violations to Water Patrol at (612) will evaluate the effectiveness of this nighttime bowfishing event later this year to determine if the restrictions need to be adjusted and if additional opportunities will be permitted. Community members can provide feedback on this year's event by contacting the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District office." Learn more here.

Suffolk angler strikes gold with reel-y big £3k catch
A man has netted £3,000 after he caught an elusive 27lb (12.2kg) golden coloured Riggey, 26, from Walsham le Willows near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, has been fishing on and off for a number years before getting back into it two years fishing at Suffolk Water Park near Claydon he regularly saw a large orange fish, known to the lake's anglers as Carrot, which had not been caught since 2023. Last week Mr Riggey patience was rewarded when he successfully hooked and landed Carrot which he describe as "a nerve-wracking experience". "I'd seen fish showing all day and thought I had one more chance to try and bag a fish," Mr Riggey explained."I got the rods out for the evening, sat down on my bucket as I normally do, eating my porridge and within half-an-hour off the right hand rod goes."I pulled into it and got to 30 yards out and up she comes - a big gold fish and I knew exactly what fish it was." It is believed the distinctive fish has been in the lake for over 30 years. After capturing it, weighing it and photographing it, Mr Riggey released it back to its watery home. "That's probably the most nervous I've ever been..."It's a fish that I've wanted to catch, it hasn't be caught in well over two years. "It's such an elusive carp which has been sort of waving at me in weeks gone by as if to say, 'you're not going to catch me'." Anglers at the lake pay into a pot for those who capture the largest specimens, with the amounts gradually building if they are not caught. The pot stood at £3,000 for Carrot which Mr Riggey now plans spend on a holiday for his family. After his catch he said he had been overwhelmed with people congratulating him and contacting him. But he is not done yet an and his eyes are now on other fish in the lake."What a great moment in my angling career, it's amazing," he added. Angler catches world's biggest carp weighing almost EIGHT STONE and is left ‘in total disbelief'
AN ANGLER was left in "total disbelief" after he caught the world's biggest carp. The massive fish weighed an astonishing EIGHT STONE and was reeled in by Brit David Knock. 3 3 Knock was fishing in Euro Aqua in Hungary when he pulled off the monstrous catch. The fishing club is located on Lake Balaton near Nemesvita and is renowned for its big fish. Knock arrived with the aim of beating his previous record of a 56lb fish that he caught at Brittany Mills in France. He was left shocked when he managed to reel in the 105.4lb carp. A post about the catch was shared on Facebook, which Knock reacted to. He wrote: "It really was a dream come true, best moment in all my many years fishing." The giant fish came after he had already managed to catch an 80lb carp during the trip with his pal Russ Bryant. Speaking to the Angling Times, he said: "The trip was planned 18 months previously and I had been excited to visit the venue. "There's really nowhere else that compares when it comes to big carp fishing. "The anticipation that the next fish to take your bait could be over 100lb is hard to explain." Question of Sport's Phil Tufnell backs new wellbeing campaign to get people fishing 3 Knock also admitted that he had a "meltdown" when he realised the size of the carp. He was also left in "total disbelief" that he had caught it and that he had set a record. He added: "It was absolutely massive, and I just went into meltdown. "I'm so glad Russ was on hand to keep me composed. "'It won't go in the net,' were the words I heard Russ mutter, but thankfully, we managed to shuffle it in. "As per protocol, we called the owner, and thankfully, they came round quickly to help with the weighing. "By this point, I was in complete shock, with everything that followed becoming a bit of a blur. "We weighed the fish, and read out 47.8kg, exclaiming it was a record. I was in total disbelief that I'd actually caught it." Knock was sent many congratulatory messages on the catch as it was released back into the water. The average common carp usually weighs between 0.5 stone and 4.5 stone and can measure between 40 and 80cm.
