KU Cancer Center breaks ground on new facility
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — The University of Kansas Cancer Center has broken ground on a new facility that will bring research and patient care into one shared space for the first time in the center's history. The project was marked by a ceremony attended by local and state officials, as well as physicians, researchers, and leaders from The University of Kansas Health System. Community cleans up cemetery after tornado The new building will focus on cellular therapy, a cancer treatment that uses a patient's cells to target and fight the disease. Compared to chemotherapy and radiation, cellular therapy is known for producing fewer side effects. The facility will also include a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratory for cellular therapeutics. This lab will support the production of CAR T-cell therapy, a treatment currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in seven forms. According to the cancer center, hundreds of additional therapies are under development. Construction of the facility is part of the cancer center's broader effort to expand access to emerging treatments and support the development of personalized cancer care.
