Chile's Matthei Details Plan to Save Billions in Public Spending
Chile presidential candidate Evelyn Matthei laid out plans to save state coffers $1.5 billion annually by combating fraud and revamping government purchases, following a scandal over irregular medical leave by public employees.
The center-right contender said on Tuesday that, if elected, her administration would save $500 million a year with tougher oversight of medical leave, another $500 million by cutting down on personnel and non-essential items and the same amount by detecting overpriced goods in government purchases.
