Weekend decorator: Builder-grade laundry room gets a big lift
Article content Dear Virginie Article content We bought a new 'builder house' about 10 years ago and it's obvious the laundry room was an afterthought. It's ugly and functions really poorly. Even though the room is big, we always feel crammed in there. We need storage solutions too, since it's the place where we keep our cleaning products and become a bit of a dumping ground. Article content Article content Article content I see what you mean. The room looks quite big — 6×10 feet judging by the size of the floor tiles, but everything is stuck in the corner and you have no storage or surfaces to work on. The plumbing and venting also look pretty unfinished. Article content Article content Let's start with function. The ceilings in your laundry room are quite high, so we can take advantage of vertical space to give you more storage. I like the idea of keeping the washer and dryer stacked, but let's enclose them in some cabinetry that will give you storage room for soap and cleaning supplies above, and also hide all the venting I can see up top. As you can see in my rendering, we can leave a little room on the left for tall items like your ironing board and mop. Article content Next, I would run a counter from the side of the laundry toward the door, along the right-hand wall. In the corner that will be awkward to access, we can hide some storage for items that are used less often, or lighter bulkier items like your mop bucket and cleaning supplies. This will also hide all the plumbing connections. A 24-inch-deep kitchen cabinet should work well in that corner. From the side of the machines toward the right-hand wall I would suggest you either mount a rod that you can use to hang items for drying, or you could place a closed cupboard there if you have more storage items that you want to hide away. In that case, an upper kitchen cabinet would work well. Article content Article content The new counter space will give you lots of room to fold items on, and rolling laundry bins can be tucked underneath. These are great to keep laundry sorted and off the floor. Depending on what you choose, you would have room for two or three of them. Above the counter is a perfect spot for vertical laundry-hanging; there are lots of clever racks that fold up when not in use so they lie flat against the wall. You have room for two of these above the counter. Article content Article content The last thing to tackle would be the overall aesthetics. You're lucky you have nice modern machines as a starting point. I like the idea of playing up the idea of water since it's a laundry room. Ikea has great blue cabinetry that can easily be modified to fit here, and how about wallpaper in the whole room to give it all a stylish lift? I've chosen wallpaper with a fish motif because I think it's whimsical and fun, but I could just as easily see a stylized wave motif wallpaper or some vinyl decals. I like the scale of the fish wallpaper because it makes the room seem bigger than it is. a Swedish company that prints really fun wallpapers, both traditional and easy-to-install peel-and-stick varieties. Just be sure to choose a vinyl paper that will stand up well to heat and humidity in the room.

Shoppers race to Asda as £7 Persil laundry liquid slashed to pennies & ‘greedy' people are clearing the shelves
ASDA has slashed the prices of a wide range of laundy essentials. Shoppers are racing to pick up the bargains as shelves are being cleared across different locations. 5 5 Some of the products are marked to just pennies, but the deals aren't available in every Asda store. One customer shared the haul he picked up in a post on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK. "This will keep a few people happy and their clothes smelling nice for a while," the bargain hunter joked. He revealed that he visited eight Asda stores in search of the sales and "drew blanks" in five. The Facebook user explained that he got "a few minor bits" in one, while he "did OK" in another. He revealed the final store he visited "had shelves full and still had loads when I left". According to the bargain hunter, Asda shoppers need to be prepared to put in some time and effort to nab these deals. He shared images of all the products he picked up, filling multiple shopping trolleys and baskets, as well as his car boot. His haul included Vanish Oxi Action, which was reduced to just £2.35. He also nabbed Daz Gel, Lenor Fabric Conditioner, Lenor Scent Booster Beads, Comfort Laundry Detergent, Ineos Laundry Detergent, Persil Wonder Wash and detergent capsules. Cleaning fan reveals the cheap, easy way to get clothes smelling 'beautiful' without shelling out on pricey dryer sheets The rest of his boot was filled with Surf Detergent Capsules, Eco Egg Laundry Egg Refill Pellets, Fairy Detergent Capsules, and Bold Detergent Capsules. Meanwhile, the Asda own brand Fabric Softeners were available for just 68p. Another shopper shared the buys she picked up from the Asda location in Pentwyn. The store had reduced all its Surf products to just £1.50. Meanwhile, the Persil 55 Wonder Wash is available for just £2.50, and the Ineos Laundry Detergent is listed for £1.48. Laundry tips Catherine Green, sustainable cleaning expert at smol shared her laundry tips. How often should you be remaking your bed? When it comes to your bed, maintaining a hygienic sleep setup can actually improve your sleep quality, helping you start every day better. Most people shed 500 million skin cells per day and a lot of that ends up in bed for dust mites to feed on. And those with asthma or allergies might see symptoms worsen by sleeping on dirty sheets! You want to be washing your sheets once a week - or every 10 days if you don't suffer from allergies and wear nightclothes. Bedding builds up with sweat, skin cells and oils quickly, even if it doesn't look dirty. Using an effective detergent like smol's will still give you a great clean on a 20°C cycle - that's better for the planet and your energy bills! What temperature do smol recommend then? For your regular weekly washes I recommend washing most loads at 20°C for 30 minutes. It's gentler on fabrics, slashes energy use, and still delivers excellent stain removal with the right detergent. A colder wash can actually be more effective if you opt for a bio detergent as its enzymes need cooler water; too hot and they lose their ability to digest stains. A wash at 60°c (unless you have silk sheets) every now and again can help kill off dust mites and other nasties. What's the difference between bio and non-bio detergent? Bio detergents contain enzymes, which are especially good at breaking down tough stains like food, grass, or sweat. It's best used in mid to low temperature washes (ideally between 20-40°C) as anything hotter can cause them not to work effectively. Non-bio skips the enzymes, which in turn makes it more suitable for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Although non-bio doesn't contain enzymes, it's still great at removing stains and keeping your clothes clean, you just may need to use a slightly higher temperature setting to aid with the cleaning process. And there's a secret button on your washing machine that could save you £72 per year. Meanwhile, B&M shoppers were racing to pick up laundry buy scanning for just 10p. Or a 69p household item can also be used to remove stains from your clothes. And five simple laundry hacks that save you money and protect your clothes. Plus, adding another kitchen staple will instantly brighten your laundry. 5 5 5

Home hygiene brand Cleevo has raised USD 1 million in a seed funding round led by Eternal Capital, with participation from Zeca Capital, DeVC, Utsav Somani (iSeed), Suhail Sameer (OTP Ventures), Sumit Jalan, Ajay Kumar (Action Tesa Group), Alok Mittal (Indifi), and members of the Venture Garage Network. The freshly secured capital will fuel Cleevo's next growth phase, powering a 10X expansion in manufacturing, deeper investments in research and development, and aggressive scaling across digital-first distribution channels, B2B pilots, and select international markets. The company will also direct funds toward talent acquisition and brand-building initiatives, aiming to deepen consumer engagement and amplify awareness. Cleevo was founded in 2022 by Mayank Jain and Karan Shah, combining their strengths in brand-building, business strategy, and manufacturing. The brand delivers non-toxic, high-performance home cleaning products in concentrate formats, rethinking traditional liquid cleaners that are inefficient, bulky, and environmentally taxing. "Home hygiene hasn't seen meaningful innovation in decades. We're still buying bottles that are 90% water and 10% performance, paying more for packaging and logistics than for effectiveness. Cleevo questions that model from the ground up," said Mayank Jain, Founder and CEO. "This fundraise isn't just about capital—it's validation of our mission to create smarter, safer, and more sustainable cleaning solutions." Cleevo's products are designed to reduce plastic waste, cut carbon emissions, and enable conscious consumption. The compact concentrates are easier to store, cheaper to ship, and perform better—without the ecological cost of traditional cleaners. Already, the brand has served over 1.5 lakh customers across India, gaining traction on Zepto, Amazon, Flipkart, and its own D2C platform. "Cleevo is proving that conscious cleaning doesn't need to be costly or inconvenient," said Dhruv Dhanraj Bahl, Managing Partner at Eternal Capital. "They're re-engineering every aspect of the category—format, logistics, and formulation—to make sustainability the new default." With innovation at its core and sustainability in its DNA, Cleevo is redefining what clean means for the modern Indian household.

Awful photo shows what happened to adorable Alabama girl, 5, who drank ETHANOL at school
The parents of a 5-year-old Alabama girl are desperate for answers after she was was found to have ingested a large amount of alcohol commonly found in cleaning products after being picked up from school. Little Algeria Singleton was limp and 'slobbering at the mouth' when her parents arrived at Collins-Rhodes Elementary School in Prichard outside Mobile on April 28. Her mother, Mary Singleton, said neither she nor her husband, Albert, 47, had been contacted by the school, despite their daughter's alarming condition. 'The school teachers came out to the van with her, but they was carrying her instead of her walking,' Mary told WKRG. 'The nurse, she broke it down as to where she probably felt like it was like an ear infection. But it was nothing of that nature.' The teacher then handed the child to her parents, urging them to seek emergency care. 'She was slobbering at the mouth, she was heavy, and the teacher handed her to me, saying we probably needed to take her to the ER,' Mary told WALA. Algeria was rushed to Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile, where she spent two days in the ICU. Doctors found she had consumed a large amount of ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, which is commonly found in products like hand sanitizers, skincare items, perfumes, and some food packaging materials, according to the Chemical Safety Facts Organization. The girl's blood-alcohol content was recorded at 0.29 percent - more than four times the legal driving limit of 0.08 percent for adults in Alabama. 'How is this even possible?' Albert asked. 'Where was the supervision?' A toxicology report confirmed the presence of ethanol, though how Algeria accessed it remains unclear. Albert said his daughter was unresponsive from about 3 pm, when they picked her up at school, until around 3 am the next morning. Algeria was discharged from the hospital on April 30 and is recovering slowly, reported. The family said they did not plan to send her back to the school for the rest of the year. The Singletons are now desperate for answers as to what happened that day and how their little girl may have accessed the substance. 'We feel betrayed,' Mary added to WKRG. 'Because of the way the whole situation was handled. Bad. You know, and they know us personally… and they could have did a better job reaching out.' The Mobile County Public Schools System did not respond to several news outlets' requests for comment. Albert said the incident is being investigated by the Prichard Police Department, Mobile County Sheriff's Office and the Mobile County District Attorney's Office.
