Cartier warns customers that personal data was exposed in hacking incident
Cartier, the French luxury goods brand known for its iconic jewelry and watches, says it was impacted by a data breach, according to an email shared with clients on Monday. 'An unauthorized party gained temporary access to our system and obtained limited client information,' the email read. According to Cartier, the incident may have affected client information – specifically names, email addresses and country. However, the company says the affected information did not include passwords, credit card details or any other banking information. 'We have informed the relevant authorities and are working with external cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and strengthen our security posture,' Cartier said. Cartier says they have 'contained the issue,' but advise customers to remain alert for any suspicious activity. has reached out to Cartier for comment. Cartier, founded in 1847 by Parisian watchmaker Louis-François Cartier, is widely known for its exquisite jewelry, watches, gems and accessories – like leather goods and sunglasses. Family-owned until 1964 and now a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont Group, Cartier has three historical Maisons in Paris, London and New York. This incident comes on the heels of a cyberattack launched against luxury lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret, which led to a website outage for several days. The lingerie retailer's shares dropped by nearly six per cent since the incident, until the website was reinstated, CNN reported. According to CNN, a number of high-end retailers – like U.K.-based Marks & Spencer have been targets for sophisticated hacking by those associated with a cybercriminal group in the recent months.
