Ethan Hedges cracks 2 solo home runs and USC closes in on super regional berth
CORVALLIS, Oregon (AP) — Ethan Hedges hit two solo home runs and USC defeated Saint Mary's 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the championship round of the Corvallis Regional. Hedges gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead with a one-out home run in the bottom of the first inning. Advertisement Saint Mary's went ahead on a two-run home run by Diego Castellanos in the second inning. The Gaels made it 3-1 when Aide Taurek homered to lead off the fourth. USC tied it in the bottom of the inning when Augie Lopez blasted a two-run homer to right-center field and Hedges' one-out homer in the fifth gave the Trojans the lead for good. Richard Tejeda delivered an RBI single in the sixth for a 5-3 lead. Cody Kashimoto's sacrifice fly in the eighth got the Gaels within 5-4 but Maximo Martinez got the run back for USC with an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning. USC's Caden Hunter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season. Starter Mason Edwards (3-0) got the win, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Advertisement John Damozonio (4-3) took the loss for Saint Mary's (36-25). USC (37-21) advances to the championship round, a win away from the super regionals. (AP) — Dorian Gonzalez Jr. hit a grand slam, a three-run home run and finished with eight RBIs, Griffin Hugus pitched a complete game and No. 3 seed Miami beat Columbia 14-1 at the Hattiesburg Regional on Saturday night. Hugus (6-7) allowed a run on eight hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Advertisement Miami (33-24) advanced to the championship round and awaits the winner of a loser-out game between Columbia and host Southern Miss, which the fourth-seeded Tigers beat 11-4 in the opening round on Friday. UTSA sends No. 2 overall seed Texas to losers' bracket with 9-7 victory in Austin Regional
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — James Taussig went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to help UTSA send No. 2 overall seed Texas to the losers' bracket with a 9-7 come-from-behind victory at the Austin Regional on Saturday night. Host Texas (43-13) will play No. 3 seed Kansas State in an elimination game Sunday. The winner would have to beat the Roadrunners (46-13) Sunday night and again on Monday to advance to the super regionals. Advertisement The Longhorns scored five runs in the third inning off UTSA starter Conor Myles and reliever Connor Kelley to take a 6-1 lead. Nathan Hodge had a two-run single and Taussig doubled in the final of four runs in the fifth as the Roadrunners pulled within 6-5.
