Wichita County workers honored at law firm's cookout event

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A local law firm located in downtown Wichita Falls fired up the grill to say thank you to the men and women who serve Wichita County. On Monday, June 9, the Hoover Rogers Law Firm hosted an appreciation cookout across the street from the courthouse. They served hundreds of burgers and hot dogs, with all of the fixings, chips, cookies, and ice-cold drinks. Ben Hoover, one of the partners at Hoover Rogers Law, said it's the firm's way of expressing gratitude to the people who serve the citizens of Wichita County day in and day out. 'We set up a big barbecue here across the street from the courthouse, and one of my buddies is helping us cook burgers and hot dogs for the county employees just to have fun and get out and show appreciation for hard-working folks,' Hoover said. Hoover added that several hundred county employees attended, including county judges, commissioners, deputies, clerks, and road workers. He said the firm tries to host some community event every few months and hopes to continue doing so in the future. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Average cookout cost hits $103 as food prices surge

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The average cost to feed a group of ten at a cookout this year is more than $100. The average cost to host a cookout for ten people reached approximately $103 this year, marking a 4.2% increase from 2024, according to Rabobank's annual Barbecue Index One of the most significant contributors to this uptick is the price of beef hot dogs, which soared by nearly 19% compared to last year. The average price for beef hot dogs rose from $3.27 to more than $4 per package. Experts attribute these mixed price trends to domestic factors like labor and production costs, rather than international tariffs. Looking ahead, grocery prices are anticipated to rise another 3.2% by the end of 2025. Despite the rising costs, many Americans continued to celebrate the holiday with traditional cookouts, finding ways to balance their menus and budgets. Gas & groceries: community reacts to Memorial Day prices

Many people choose to spend Memorial Day the same way, firing up the grill for a cookout with friends and family. Over at Presque Isle, dozens of families found a spot to set up a picnic, but first, they paid the grocery bill for the holiday food essentials. 'Over $100. Over $100,' said Armyani Thompson, Presque Isle picnicker. 'Is that good or bad in your eyes?' asked reporter Tyler Gallagher. Meadville residents commemorate Memorial Day with parade, ceremony 'It was pretty good, you know, inflation, but it's alright. It was alright,' replied Thompson. 'I would say $35 to $40. We got some hamburgers, cheeseburgers, got some chips, some mini pops, and some deviled eggs,' said Keith Gebhardt, another picnicker. Gebhardt said the eggs were definitely the most expensive during his grocery trip, but all in all the final price was pretty good. After speaking with people at Presque Isle, we went to a grocery store to see exactly how much some popular holiday picnic items would cost. Erie families celebrate Memorial Day remembering loved ones For eight burgers and 10 hotdogs, the final price comes out to around $37, including ketchup, mustard and buns, and that's from buying the cheapest option for each grocery prices play a role in Memorial Day picnics, gas prices also have an impact on holiday travelers visiting their families. 'I spend about 100 bucks a week on gas, and I go through a whole tank of gas once a week. It's gotten a lot worse. I used to spend maybe like $70, and now it's like $100, so it's pretty bad,' said Malaki Swanson. But at least for the month of May, gas prices have been staying steady for Memorial Day travelers. Cans for Wishes remembers wish kid in record breaking drop-off AAA reports that the current average price of regular gas in Erie County is $3.351, which is about 50 cents less than the average last year at $3.864. That average for Erie County is only a little bit above the state average, which sits at $3.294. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
